  • Come along as I remove and install some new ball joints on the old 1974 VW Bus!
    I show how I use a press kit, which I decided to just buy at about 200 bucks. Not a lot of tools outside what any normal shade tree mech has.
    Watch me struggle, learn, and feel like you have come along to visit, sit and stretch your legs, chat and hang.

    with the accordion music, i almost expect something comedic to happen like a silent movie of the 20s. Thanks for showing this. i'll have to do this on my own bus someday.

    Would you Recommend to Tack Weld the tops of the BJ's for extra insurance ? I had one pop out last week that a local shop had just installed. I am going to re install myself the way you did it here. Thx

    • @bishopofrustyiron3101
      @bishopofrustyiron3101  Рік тому

      Interesting...as long as the weld is just a quick zippo that you can grind off later....weird it popped out...i do know that the hispanic made busses are just a gnats hair wider than the original german ones, so the BJ are not interchangeable.i would imagine if you used a set of stock german ones on a mexi bus, you'd have that pop-out chance.

      @@bishopofrustyiron3101 I just got done with my BJ replacement. I have a 1975 mexican made bus. Had a hard time using your method with the clamp and the rental BJ tool. I did not want to break the rental so I went for plan B. I took the torsion arms out and grinded the BJ lips off. Then proceeded to use the BJ tool without the clamp and I succeeded at pressing them out. The german Meyle ball joints are a hair larger than the hole where they have to go in to. No way they went in as smooth as yours did. I had to use a 20 ton press to press them in all the way. But I got er done!

      Yup i put it back where i found it, any descent VW shop, when you take it there for an alignment, will loose it and move it to the proper camber. I guessed, and to me its working fine! No weird tire wearing or steering effects I can tell.
