      Yeah the actor for uncle Albert sold it so well to a point where we as the audience genuinely thought it could be his brother in real life. Grandad started the run off well and Albert perfectly took over the 3rd man role.

      I think they had to continue initially through force from the BBC to get the series done..... but it was around this time David Jason was ready for leaving, and had effectively told everyone that series 5 was his last ("Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" was pretty much written as Del's send off), and going forward they planned a spin off show to revolve around Rodney and Micky Pearce, but David got a bit of spring in his step after To Hull and Back, and changed his mind once production of series 6 had started)

    It was never like grandad was recasted or replaced, but just saying goodbye to one character and introducing another, still on a personal level and that personal level was family. Albert had a couple of stories about him and his brother and it all played so well in the writing and performance, it was all so beautiful. John Sullivan is truly a once in a lifetime genius, as is all the cast of only fools. We will never have a writer like him again, nor will we have a more perfectly cast set of actors. Only Fools and Horses is, without a doubt, THE most perfectly done show of all time.

    The whole thing happened in a way that was meant to be. The combining of reality and fiction with a clever little joke to keep the humor alive. I’m sure he would be smiling and wishing his fellow actors the very best. Also his replacement was not a disappointment, buster merryfield for me was absolute comedy gold. Well worthy of the role and fitted in perfectly. Uncle Albert was my favourite character of the two, not to take anything away from Lenard pierce.

    I'd love for more blurays of the show to be released and for Lennard's original footage from Hole in One to be included. I think once upon a time it might have been seen as a morbid extra but nowadays it is seen more as honouring him to show his final performances. Much like the Star Trek The Next Generation blurays included David Rappaport in The Most Toys before he died and was replaced by Saul Rubineck.

    Only Lennard Pearce's Grandad could have played that Chandelier scene so brillantly.

      That was BRILLIANT. I just watched 👀 it again the other day. The chandelier cost 5000 pounds to buy. They had to do it in one take without laughing. The crew had hanky shoved in their mouths to stop them from laughing. 😂😂😂

    “Has anyone seen my hat?”
    Is actually a very very important line in history of the show.
    It shows that no matter what tragedy might befall the Trotters, might befall the cast, the humour is still alive. How brilliant how clever, to so poignantly throw a clear symbol of a character (grandads hat) into his grave with him, only for the audience to realize it was the vicars hat instead. That line, Has anyone seen my hat? probably saved the show, and proved it could still be funny despite such a sad loss.

    My favourite lines of 'Grandad ' were the episode where Rodney and Del split up the partnership "what is it Rodney a wendy house" and the one where they find out Rodney is seeing an older woman .."even i,d have to think twice" ....absolutely brilliant....

    It would be interesting to know, what the original plot was for the Hole in One episode with Grandad.
    In the images you can clearly see him outside the court in the wheelchair similar to what Albert was after being found out.
    Albert's reason for defrauding the brewery was to pay for grandad's headstone. I wonder what story they wrote for Leonard Pearce in the role.

      @clark82 10 місяців тому +1

      Its a easy script to rework, as you only really need to change the two bookends of the story.... probably Del has a fine or bill to pay, and that is why Grandad did it.

      In the episode Albert mentions they'd both (him and grandad ie his brother) would be on the act in their younger days. Weirdly the episode works better with Albert in the reworking , and I prefer grandad.

      @therebel4332 @clark82
      Yeah, I agree with you both. In the original script, it would've been Grandad that undertook the parachute training, and it was him that deliberately fell down the holes/open cellars, anytime he needed easy money. Settling out of court in the process.
      The Trotters were broke in the episode, and Rodney had spent the last of their money on sun tan lotion in the middle of winter. So Grandad's reason for doing it was probably just to help them out financially

    Loved the character of grandad and preferred him to Uncle Albert. Wish we had more with grandad and wish we had more of seasons very similar of those 1 to 4. Felt they changed from S5 onward. S5 was close to 1-4, with 6 being very far away from them all. We could only wish
