Marcus is one of the most under the radar jazz pianists alive today. He's unbelievable. He's one of the most influential pianists for me personally I've ever heard. Alone with 3 giants is one of the greatest solo jazz piano albums ever!
Even more than his incredible impression of Monk, without being Monk, is his rhythmic pulse. And who doesn't love the history of Black American Music, from ragtime to post-Bop, with some boogie-woogie and some stride for good measure. He even plays flat-fingered, just like Monk did!
This is excellent! Starts out as Monk played by James P. Johnson. Thelonious Monk is my favorite jazz pianist. The Following still seems relevant: "Monk playing solo piano is like listening to someone think out loud" ( This is a paraphrase. Please tell me if ou know who said this this first)
