I'm in Canada. Shortly after the BLM thing really picked up steam, we had our own racial reckoning shoved down our throats by the media. So I'm listening to CBC and they're interviewing some academic about racial disparities in food insecurity between whites and blacks in Canada. Controlling only for household income and homeownership, he concluded that because a higher percentage of blacks experience food insecurity even at the same income level and even as homeowners, this must point to a problem of systemic racism. I was like, what? What about different cultural attitudes towards spending (clothes, cars, furniture, etc)? What about controlling for the number of times the family eats out versus cooking at home? The amount of money people spend on personal grooming (manicures, hairstyling, etc)? Why must we pretend there's some kind of systemic, racist force keeping black people from going to the grocery store?

I think constantly telling a group of people that the entire system is designed to keep them from achieving has an effect. Why bother trying if there is no point because the “system” is against them? That really is an abusive technique. I don’t know what it was like everywhere, but when I was growing up in the ‘70s and ‘80s we were always told we could do whatever we wanted if we really worked for it. While that may have been somewhat exaggerated, at least it helped people strive instead of give up. I saw a man on the street interview with a black conservative watching a protest and he said he grew up without a lot of money, and said he wouldn’t say poor because his father taught him that poor is a mindset. That really got me thinking. What a profound statement! It’s so true.

They aren't "kept" from voicing anything. Unfortunately, they simply don't make "good TV." Views don't come from civil discussion, they come from "X DESTROYS Y and they CRY!?" They aren't being suppressed, people just don't want to watch them. It sucks, but if Glenn or Sowell got the views that Shapiro or Alex Jones got, they'd get more play. Aj I agree. How can you expect police to be as good as a navy seal when their training is less than 3% of their hours worked in a year. Seals spend more than 20% of their hours worked training. You gotta give them better training and tools not defunding.

This was a great conversation between these two men. I can imagine the positive impact that these kind of conversations could have ultimately world wide if they were just played on cable television every now and then. @@godzillamegatron3590 are you willing to put on a uniform and a gun and go out into these streets, answering calls for help? I believe it's the nature of the job most of the time, police largely are only involved when there's a report of trouble, and they go in "on guard." Certainly there are some bad shootings, and some of those are prosecuted. It looks like about 1/2 the cases brought against police end in conviction. They do have special protection Because they go into danger as a community service. There is new legislation requiring all law enforcement agencies to start reporting use of force to the the FBI for a database, rather than the cities, counties, states only keeping track.. that should help weed out habitatual offenders/abusive cops. Personally, I don't think patrol officers should stay on the streets for very long, maybe 5 or 10 years, I'm sure some of what they witness hardens them, and they should be screened for mental health the same as an annual physical. I believe most people don't want to murder others, including police people. And I believe if someone pointed a gun at me, I'd shoot first. The DOJs website has some data on police interactions with the public, but it's voluntarily submitted, so incomplete. I'll find you the black Harvard professor's study on police violence that shocked everyone, but media doesn't report.
This is one of those guys who remembers everything he reads... They freak me out! People who have a great memory always do well. As a student in a prestigious university in England, I remember trying to incorporate clever-sounding phrases from scholarly sources - often just a couple of words - in my essays; the dons (professors) recognised them every time and let me know I wasn't kidding anyone. Loury speaks like an encyclopaedia and is totally authoritative; he'd have let me know. It's why I'm who I am and he's who he is.
I always wonder who the people are that dislike videos like these. It's informative, rational and honest, delivered by educated and level-headed people, no screaming or name-calling in sight. What about this is not to like?
It was good to see Loury appear as a guest, whereas I am used to him hosting a conversation or as part of a larger discussion panel, all of which have been rich experiences as well. We need a million more Glenn Lourys here in the US. Too many people just aren’t willing to have an honest conversation about race in America. Until that changes, we have no hope of actually fixing anything. Nothing has harmed Black America more than the rise of the welfare state and Democrat policy. In 1960, which would be nearly 100 years after the end of slavery, only 22% of black families were single parent. In 1980, before the crack epidemic and just 20 years after the welfare state, that number had increased to 52%. In the 1990's, that number had increased to over 70%. After 30 years of the welfare state, single parent black families more than TRIPLED! If you look at some of the worst metropolitan areas in the country for Black Americans such as St. Louis, Detroit, Baltimore, Memphis, Milwaukee, Cleveland, New Orleans, and Chicago: they're all Democrat-controlled. Now don't get me wrong, I don't trust Republicans, but we need to stop pretending like the Democrats are an ally to Black Americans.

There was times that they had people of color alone and they did beat them up. But they never got away with it. Always they got suspended and charges laid. Seeing this made us feel very upset nobody let this shit happen. Sometimes there was fights between a black man and white man but it was never ever becuase of skin colour. Canadians absolutely will not stand for anybody being treated in this manor. We need to take a page from trumps book and ban all forms of critical race theory, white fragility, cancel culture, systemic racism, wokeness in general. Trump has recently appointed Larry Elder - a prominent black commentator and writer - as a Member of the Commission on the Social Status of Black Men and Boys. Elder says similar things to Loury. A step forward.
Larry Elder is a great addition to the Trump administration. I just wish he had brought him on-board three and a half years ago. Larry is going to do great work, and he's not going to allow himself to be treated by the mainstream media the way Dr Ben Carson has been treated. Folks, anybody born in the United States is not "African American", that person would be American and only American. It says so on their U.S. passports. We have great respect for Glenn Loury and less so for McWhorter, because McwWhorter was prepared to tolerate evil, if it meant getting rid of Donald Trump. Glenn Loury criticised McWhorter for that stand. Glenn Loury is the kind of man we all would like to have as a friend.
I am shocked but very pleasantly surprised that this Professor from Brown University, my alma mater, said what he said in this interview. The university unfortunately has gone incredibly left, and has made it impossible for many people, students, teachers, and alumnae to attend, present, speak out, or support the school. Brown has actively suppressed opposing (conservative) viewpoints, has actively supported the indoctrination of extremely leftist and socialist viewpoints, and has even created not only safe spaces but also segregationist dormitories for blacks only. I agree with everything Professor Loury said, and I also commend his bravery in saying what he did, and am amazed that he has not been driven out of the school and campus. He is a new hero of mine!

So I'm listening to CBC and they're interviewing some academic about racial disparities in food insecurity between whites and blacks in Canada. Controlling only for household income and homeownership, he concluded that because a higher percentage of blacks experience food insecurity even at the same income level and even as homeowners, this must point to a problem of systemic racism.
I was like, what? What about different cultural attitudes towards spending (clothes, cars, furniture, etc)? What about controlling for the number of times the family eats out versus cooking at home? The amount of money people spend on personal grooming (manicures, hairstyling, etc)?
Why must we pretend there's some kind of systemic, racist force keeping black people from going to the grocery store?

That really is an abusive technique. I don’t know what it was like everywhere, but when I was growing up in the ‘70s and ‘80s we were always told we could do whatever we wanted if we really worked for it. While that may have been somewhat exaggerated, at least it helped people strive instead of give up.
I saw a man on the street interview with a black conservative watching a protest and he said he grew up without a lot of money, and said he wouldn’t say poor because his father taught him that poor is a mindset. That really got me thinking. What a profound statement! It’s so true.

I believe the statistics show that police violence is on the decline, and like Professor Loury sais, all colors of people are killed in America by police. We live in a huge, well armed country, for the average police related deaths to be 1,200 a year, when they have millions of interactions with the public does not equal "police are hunting black people." I'd love for all death to end, but that's not going to happen. Some people live and die by the gun.

@@godzillamegatron3590 are you willing to put on a uniform and a gun and go out into these streets, answering calls for help? I believe it's the nature of the job most of the time, police largely are only involved when there's a report of trouble, and they go in "on guard." Certainly there are some bad shootings, and some of those are prosecuted. It looks like about 1/2 the cases brought against police end in conviction. They do have special protection Because they go into danger as a community service.
There is new legislation requiring all law enforcement agencies to start reporting use of force to the the FBI for a database, rather than the cities, counties, states only keeping track.. that should help weed out habitatual offenders/abusive cops. Personally, I don't think patrol officers should stay on the streets for very long, maybe 5 or 10 years, I'm sure some of what they witness hardens them, and they should be screened for mental health the same as an annual physical.
I believe most people don't want to murder others, including police people. And I believe if someone pointed a gun at me, I'd shoot first. The DOJs website has some data on police interactions with the public, but it's voluntarily submitted, so incomplete. I'll find you the black Harvard professor's study on police violence that shocked everyone, but media doesn't report.
This is one of those guys who remembers everything he reads... They freak me out! People who have a great memory always do well. As a student in a prestigious university in England, I remember trying to incorporate clever-sounding phrases from scholarly sources - often just a couple of words - in my essays; the dons (professors) recognised them every time and let me know I wasn't kidding anyone. Loury speaks like an encyclopaedia and is totally authoritative; he'd have let me know. It's why I'm who I am and he's who he is.

We need a million more Glenn Lourys here in the US. Too many people just aren’t willing to have an honest conversation about race in America. Until that changes, we have no hope of actually fixing anything. Nothing has harmed Black America more than the rise of the welfare state and Democrat policy.
In 1960, which would be nearly 100 years after the end of slavery, only 22% of black families were single parent.
In 1980, before the crack epidemic and just 20 years after the welfare state, that number had increased to 52%.
In the 1990's, that number had increased to over 70%.
After 30 years of the welfare state, single parent black families more than TRIPLED!
If you look at some of the worst metropolitan areas in the country for Black Americans such as St. Louis, Detroit, Baltimore, Memphis, Milwaukee, Cleveland, New Orleans, and Chicago: they're all Democrat-controlled.
Now don't get me wrong, I don't trust Republicans, but we need to stop pretending like the Democrats are an ally to Black Americans.

These people jsut need a real good god damn beating for once in there life they need consequence. These are the kids raised withought spankins and not allowed to fail grades and not allowed to loose any game in sports. This is what happens when we dont teach our children the value of hard work and no consequences for there actions. Entire generations of young adults have been indoctrinated at school to think this way! We had this shit beat when i was in high school in the 90s we just did not even talk about racism becuase it was not a problem! We all knew and understood that all of us where equal. We did mot even think about this. There was some people that where racist but they where so so small an amount of people. My high school had 1500 students.. maybe 3 of them where full blown skin heads. Nazi tattoos and pins and shaved heads and they did lash out on people of color but not just blacks anyone that was not white. but never ever did they get away with it. If other people where around at lunch break outside nobody let this shit carry on. They would be run out of the area by the mob of students watching. There was times that they had people of color alone and they did beat them up. But they never got away with it. Always they got suspended and charges laid. Seeing this made us feel very upset nobody let this shit happen. Sometimes there was fights between a black man and white man but it was never ever becuase of skin colour. Canadians absolutely will not stand for anybody being treated in this manor. We need to take a page from trumps book and ban all forms of critical race theory, white fragility, cancel culture, systemic racism, wokeness in general. These theorys will destroy our civilization as we know it. These social justic warriors are destroying the very fabric of our society. If you beleive in any of these theorys then your lost truly lost. We should be proud of our history and this way of thinking is absolute poison and makes you hate you country and want to tear it down. This is not a freedom of speech matter this is a protecting our society and standing up against false information that will destroy our childrens mind. The newest generations we just raised have gone so damn wrong in the worste way ever. It is becuase of this way of thinking!!!! We need to outlaw this entire way of thinking and social justice culture in a whole. These people act like we still have colored water and eating areas and separate living conditions. The fact is today all black minorities have the exact same opportunity that everyone else has. We have not discriminated people for decades. We need to wake up and we need to wake up now!

Trump has recently appointed Larry Elder - a prominent black commentator and writer - as a Member of the Commission on the Social Status of Black Men and Boys. Elder says similar things to Loury. A step forward.
Larry Elder is a great addition to the Trump administration. I just wish he had brought him on-board three and a half years ago. Larry is going to do great work, and he's not going to allow himself to be treated by the mainstream media the way Dr Ben Carson has been treated. I think it would be amazing if Glenn Loury was added to the Trump administration in some capacity.

Folks, anybody born in the United States is not "African American", that person would be American and only American. It says so on their U.S. passports. Africa is a continent with every color person living there and unless you were born there, you should not pretend to be from there just because you are black.
The 'African' refers to historically geographically distinctive racial origin.

We follow Glenn Loury and John McWhorter on the Glenn show. We have great respect for Glenn Loury and less so for McWhorter, because McwWhorter was prepared to tolerate evil, if it meant getting rid of Donald Trump. Glenn Loury criticised McWhorter for that stand. Glenn Loury is the kind of man we all would like to have as a friend.
I am shocked but very pleasantly surprised that this Professor from Brown University, my alma mater, said what he said in this interview. The university unfortunately has gone incredibly left, and has made it impossible for many people, students, teachers, and alumnae to attend, present, speak out, or support the school. Brown has actively suppressed opposing (conservative) viewpoints, has actively supported the indoctrination of extremely leftist and socialist viewpoints, and has even created not only safe spaces but also segregationist dormitories for blacks only. I agree with everything Professor Loury said, and I also commend his bravery in saying what he did, and am amazed that he has not been driven out of the school and campus. He is a new hero of mine!
