As a “old head” who attended a PWI (UC Irvine ‘84) and love HBCU Bands, I think NSU is by far the best. Don’t get me wrong, Southern University is BADDD, but NSU sound is so much cleaner.

Norfolk is easily one of the Top 5 HBCU bands....clarity, precision, arrangements, traditional fortitude, not trashy, upstanding students....that’s how the directors and school leadership requires them to be...you will never hear them trying to “out blast ” other bands even though they could...everybody always talk about them going up against Southern....people at and around Norfolk don’t even think about Southern, everybody else does...North Carolina A&T, Tennessee State and Jackson State are probably the three HBCU bands that are truly competitors to Norfolk...people have to look at the entire band and the music that they produce...if you step back and listen to Southern, they’re not melodic at all--just loud...there’s more to being a great band than being loud😉

Southern has some very beautiful arrangements of numerous songs in their catalog. Did you say Jackson State, as in Mississippi? They are great, indeed, but I am definitely more impressed by Southern's sound. They're a great band and their volume and power just so happens to add to their excitement. Southern Univ. fans like the band for what they do and how they do it, just like the fans who fawn over this band (personally I don't care for their sound and their style seems a bit quirky to me) like their black Spartans because they are a familiar sound that they have come to know and love. So all in all, let each band and their fans think they are the best, if they want, and carry on the traditions of their schools. It would be hella boring if everyone sounded the same anyway.

WOW, blow tuba's BLOW! Man the Spartan Legion sounds freaking INCREDIBLE here, and the beautiful Hot Ice dancers simply the icing on the cake! Though I'm a devout SWAC fan and a Human JukeBox alum, I've always loved the sound, the precision, and the uniqueness of the mighty NSU Spartan Legion marching band! I mean I enjoyed every single second of this amazing video of the Legion. Well done Directors and Spartan Legion band, well done!
One of of a handful of things I miss about NSU. Was a faithful member of the Spartan Legion pep squad for 2 years we used to rock every stadium we went to behind our BAND bcuz the teams never won much in my day lol
