This is pure speculation, he may be experiencing some combination of depression, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Avoidant Personality Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder, Selective Mutism to name a few. I beleive he needs real help depending on what he is going through. People showing psychological manifestations of various conditions often play video games as it satisfies their specific mental needs.
