I am again reminded of how little I know about this hobby. The average hobbyist is unaware of much of what is out there and so are missing out on so much. Thanks to your efforts we get to see in our lifetime species that otherwise we would have remained clueless about. :) Knife fish have always been one of my favorites; that suspected morph is gorgeous :)
Was lucky enough to get a group of 5 of these guys. The males look like a salmon that is about to spawn. Very hardy and doing well in our 29 gallon black(ish) water aquarium ❤️❤️❤️
Hi Oliver, beautiful new fishes for our hobby. Many thanks for this early sharing 👍 Peru seems to be a very interesting source... Very much looking to more to come 🎬 Greatings from Bavaria, Bernd 👋🙂
Wow!! These fish definitely aren't seen everyday. The new apistogramma looked stunning and very big too! Thanks for discoving new species for the fish hobby!
Not my discovery, i am just trying to show off the new fish in this case. I have not been there, only to the habitat of A.baenschi, which is near Yurimaguas, not that far from there. That habitat has similar colour.
Quick early update - Erythrinus sp. has darkened on the dorsal surface to a brick red/brown, unpaired fins and ventral surface are fire orange. Pyrrhulina have lots of red in the fins and some red on each scale. Lebiasina elongata are typical Lebiasina, high flow rate seems to turn the aggression down a notch, still always nipping at each other but nothing serious, very greedy and eager feeders. Knifefish doing well, put into a very mature aquarium, likes to zoom around and forage in the leaf litter and detritus. Looking forward to seeing what other oddities you bring next shipment!
These new species are exciting, and, I too hope that they keep their radiant colors in captivity. The apistos are my favourites, and this new species resembles A. cacatuoides somewhat, which could indicate that it may adapt to aquarium conditions. The knife fish is unusual and may just be an aberrant individual, because I have kept mottled specimens of E. virescens in the past. Good to know that they won't be over-collected in the future.
@Below Water what would you suggest for tank parameters for my Cenepa breeding group? I have 3 10g tanks beside each other that I want to use for breeding. Perhaps let them lay eggs in one and then relocate them to the next similar habitat and repeat the process. What do you think? Thanks in advance!😊
@@WichitaFallFishKeeper no measurable hardness, pH5, blackwater, maybe play with the temperature a bit and see what happens. The other red pencils should breed the way you suggest no problem.
wow.... i cant thank enough to bring up these videos. ur channel deserves more audience and i hope soon u will get that with the help of ur high quality information packed videos. I do have a question. Whom do u send fishes in Toronto ? Can I purchase few fishes from him ? I am very excited to know u have contact in Toronto. I stay at Mississauga.
these films are superb 👌, do you think that the type of tannins in the environment which these fish are found stains the fish or what the feed on thanks again for the insights into these places these fish are phenomenal 😀
No, i just think that the red colour is good camouflage in the red water. A lot of these fish have some red to begin with, even their relatives that occur in other water types.
shot in the dark... but.. any idea on what plant species the riparian growth there contains? and which aquatic species, if any? this is for a biotope i am planning. would love to hear if you can point me in a general direction
the riparian vegetation is pretty random, ficus, aroids etc. Seedlings from Amazonian trees and sometimes ferns. In the dry season likely just their root systems, and the high water season these plants will be some weeks under water. I think you could grow potted philodendrons and other aroids and maybe some creeping ficus (careful they can split silicone tanks with their roots) and let their roots dangle in the water. Generally, there are no permanently aquatic plants in those places. I think the dark water just has not enough light, especially with the forest cover above. Round rocks, leaf litter and some roots along the edges would be most realistic.
Copella nattereri, Crenuchus spilurus, Hyphessobrycon agulha, Hemigrammus geisleri, Bryconops giacopinii, Poeciliocharax weitzmani - those fish are all in the paper on the Reserva Ducke (near Manaus) and occur with Nanostomus beckfordi - published by INPA "Guia de Peixes da Reserva Ducke - Amazonia Central" that is just an example i could find online.
I think 10 gallons/40 liters is way too small for territorial species. The males want to have a territory larger than that for themselves. I would suggest to take a less territorial species of Nannostomus.
A,cacatuoides, pertensis, hippolytae, agassizii, bitaeniata all occur in that general region. That same paper i suggested to you mentions hippolytae and agassizii. A.trifasciatus is from the south, it prefers cooler water.
"Really Red Pencilfish" is not an especially creative name. There's no shortage of suitable synonyms for "red". The Carmine Pencilfish... the Vermillion Pencilfish... the Cardinal Pencilfish... the Scarlet Pencilfish... the Ruby Pencilfish... the Crimson Pencilfish... the Sanguine Pencilfish
No, both _Adontosternarchus nebulosus_ from South America and _Pollimyrus schreyeni_ from Central Africa have this blotchy pattern. Maybe it is just good camouflage for cryptic black water fish.

Thanks for sharing Oliver! Couldn't expect such habitat for this red pencil fish....

Love watching these videos! That last pleco you showed was spectacular!!!

Amazing Fishes...thx's for sharing, Oliver.

Many thanks!!
A group of Super Red pencil fish with those Inferno tetras = mind blown!!!
the Infernos are quite large and mean... i don't think that would work. You will need to keep a smaller calm Hyphessobrycon like H.peugeoti
@@belowwater if we can find H. Peugeoti
Thanks for the great Video ,from Cologne Germany .
Amazingly amazing
Thank you!
just incredible information and footage
Great video, thanks for sharing.
Nice, my group are a strong red I’ve not seen in any SA freshwater ecosystem.
Epic video brother, I love all the details about the fish and habitat, those other fish from there are quite eye catching too!
Appreciate it!!

Wow awesome, I wish these were available!!
Wooow, they are all so beautiful. I cannot wait to get them available in the aquarium hobby in Indonesia. Thanks so much for sharing
Thanks for visiting
Once again nice movie with interesting informations.
Thanks for watching
Very cool! The knife fish is probably a Adontosternarchus species
I believe it's Adontosternarchus nebulosus
yes, that would fit!
Woww New !!
A petshop in Montréal has them available this week
I like c.Adolfi they are nice also not to exspensive

i lke a group corrys but dont know witch works and coms from same place?
maybe C.eques would be a good choice, that study does not mention any Corydoras, I think C.adolfoi would also work.
This is also the habitat where corydoras cw010 saremiriza is found right?
No, but close to there.
@@belowwater okay. But they do live in such blackwaters right?
@@mgrootjans7051 I have not been there, sorry. I would assume so.
Are these suitable in a tank with a betta fish? My betta is fairly mellow & not aggressive

alge eater what type is good the tank is going to be around 300L whith good filter rots rocks fine sand
I think any _Ancistrus_ species are the best algae eaters, but it depends on the algae, and what you are keeping with them.
would 8 of them be suitable for a 60f tank? 10 gallon tank?
