      I wish i could help with your proyects, im an enthusiast of repairing things and giving them a second opportunity. The bad thing is that i live in spain and im studying for PPL, but i would love to work in your projects, they look pretty amazing and challenging. I have studied mechanic and electricity (and a bit of electronic) and repaired some things on my own (also worked in some jobs related with maintenance and repairing). Love your videos 👌🏼

      I was actually a little bit surprised that he went for that considering he already has the 401on his plate that people have specifically donated towards. Even more important IMO because he just finished committing to Sam to help him with BOTH of Sam's other planes and we haven't seen ANYTHING on those and then he brings in a yacht! That seems like so much outside his wheelhouse I'm afraid he's going to be spread so thin that he's not going to do justice to any of them - but especially to Sam.

    Love the Sprite. A friend had one and it was one of the very first sticks I drove. A few years later I was a passenger in the MG version (Midget) when the driver lost control and smashed into an earthen embankment. My seat belt was fastened but the shoulder strap did not catch and I hit my head on the dash with considerable force. I’ve had chronic pain in my right shoulder ever since. That was 46 years ago. But I still love the little car and get a real charge every time I see one. I’d love to own this little baby.

      Resting is not just about avoiding using the injured body part, but also about having enough reserve energy left for the healing process.

    I owned and flew a 1966 Cherokee 140 (150hp, 2150lbs gross wt 4 seat version with the baggage area behind the back seats, essentially same thing as a PA28-150 without a baggage door) for about a decade and logged almost 1000 hours in it. Your 160hp O-320-D2A unfortunately is not going to gain a super big increase of horsepower with the powerflow exhaust, electronic ignition, etc, aftermarket STC'ed upgrades. What the new exhaust will do is let the O-320-D2A breathe free enough to make full rated hp without being strangled by the restrictive stock Piper muffler/exhaust which was a pretty awful design (except it was great for cabin heater performance on cold winter days, lol!), you'll especially notice much better climb performance but not so much top speed increase. Electronic ignition will get you noticeable improvement in smoothness and a little power boost too.... between those two mods, realisticly you're looking at maybe 10 more real measureable horsepower, 15 more max if everything about the entire overhaul / engine build is magically perfect. Lycoming's original 160hp rating for this engine was measured at max 2700rpm redline, under "standard day" atmospheric/altitude conditions (50F degrees temp, 29.92" baro, and sea level) with short open straight headpipes exhaust, not Piper's "potato shoved up its single tailpipe" muffler! Also you still gotta obey static rpms, max redline and keep that fixed pitch Sensenich aluminum prop spinning within its happy and approved published rpm limits, and you can only have its pitch twisted just so much by a prop shop. That wishful 190+ hp out of a certificated O-320, kept under its 2700 rpm redline and everything FAA-legal about it, simply ain't gonna happen.... and to the best of my knowledge and mad Googling skilz I can't seem to find anyone out there offering an STC for a turbocharger or nitrous oxide kit to slap onto an O-320 in a PA28, lolz!
    But seriously, the hersheybar wing Cherokees are for the most part, speed-limited by their wings... the combintion of airfoil, wingspan, angle of incidence, and all that jazz... as incorporated into the PA28 airframe. It's a somewhat draggy wing with a lot of induced drag as the airspeed goes up, all part of the set of compromises that also makes this such a forgiving, easy and pleasureable plane to fly. The best thing you can do is make sure everything about the whole airframe is "rigged" as straight as absolutely possible, and make sure that nobody in the past has used a flap adjustment on one side to compensate for a "heavy wing" symptom. Just making sure the ailerons and flaps were adjusted perfectly on my old Cherokee 140 was good for literally 5 MPH better top cruise speed. It already had wheel pants on all three wheels and Hoerner-style wingtips when I bought it, and I did buy the Laminar Flow nose strut fairing add-on that covers the scissors and tow bar bracket of the nose strut assembly, and believe it or not, that one single speed mod really did live up to its claim of "up to 3mph" since I saw at least 2mph increase at max level cruise. It made trying to use *any* towbar on the nosewheel a royal P.I.T.A though.... fair warning about that downside. On a good smooth cool day I eeked out ~141mph TAS at 3500MSL at WOT 2700rpm on my meager 150hp, of course any higher altitude the rpm would get lower, but the TAS still stayed well up there as the air got thinner, horsepower lowered but drag lowered too. At 7500MSL going cross country, I could still usually manage 135-138mph TAS depending on the usual varying factors, running the throttle at "full rental power" and sucking down the avgas like crazy, lol! It was a fun to fly little plane until I got bitten by the RV bug after a friend who I helped build a hotrod Vans RV-8 with tossed me the keys to the brand new toy right after it was signed off into phase 2 status and said "take her to Oshkosh" since he had business meetings all week long that year during Airventure, so I did.... and then he continued letting me fly the RV as much as I wanted as long as he didn't need it and I made sure it was topped off with fuel before putting it away back into the hanger when I was done flying it and.... well, the Cherokee was put up for sale and I think I put only like 26 hours on it that last year I owned it... and bought a Vans RV of my own and flew around at 195-200mph TAS on 6-7gph for the next 5 years before hanging up my wings to pursue another more important adventure in my life.

      So I can tell you now you and I would burn some late night hours chatting in the hangar about tons of things aviation and likely other things as well…. • @buckmurdock2500
      @buckmurdock2500 2 роки тому

      Speed enhancements for a Cherokee will come from a Knots 2 U catalog, wheel fairings and other aerodynamic cleanup, not from hot rodding the engine. And it will always be a Cherokee with a hershey bar wing so prolly shouldn't set expectations too high. Powerflow exhaust and an electronic mag will help takeoff and climb performance but again, we're talking incremental increases.

      For parents reading this. Here are some good tips to teach for if the kid decides he's too good to listen to you or just can't help himself.
      1-threaten against double edged blades or lock them away.
      2-sharp edge must always face away.
      3-never cut towards you
      4-never cut with two hands
      5-never cut without hard barriers between body and knife. (like a standing cutting board)
      6-never touch knife without an adult present or leave it on a table. Must always be in a box that cannot fall.
      7-don't use knife points as small screwdrivers because that ruins the edge and mom will kill us both. (I ruined an expensive knife set.. My mom lost her mind when she saw it. Precision screwdrivers were speciality tools in the 90's and early 2000's

      the previous owner SHOULD have the logs (in fact they should have been transferred with the aircraft when it was handed over). But sometimes they get lost, for example in a fire.
      It might be possible to recover some of the aircraft's history from FAA records or (if known) the financial records of mechanics who worked on the plane if that's the case, but it's a major hassle and an even larger puzzle with an unknown number of pieces of unknown shape and size.

    I would like to see a “to do list” created for the 401, then I’d like to see you start checking those items off by priority level. Making lists and checking them off has always been super satisfying for me and my numerous unfinished projects. Keep up the good work! Get well soon.

    • @learmonkey3582

      A “to do list” for an airplane is called the inspection guide. It tells you everything that must be inspected. By doing that you develop the discrepancy list which has every item which was found in need of repair during the inspection. He hasn’t even started on anything like that in 3 1/2 months. All that been done so far is superficial stuff that’s irrelevant to making the thing airworthy. Shiny paint and polished spinners do nothing for the airworthiness problems.

      @learmonkey3582 2 роки тому

      @@kirkm63 First, all the talking is for the best, as he is in no way qualified to do any real work on an airplane. The 401 would be a months long project if it had 3 competent A&Ps, all with a lot of twin Cessna experience, working on it everyday, all day. At the current rate, it is a years long project. That’s if it actually gets started. Thus far he hasn’t even bothered to determine what airworthiness issues it has except for the engines. Solving the engine issues is the easiest thing about this project. Airframe issues have the very real possibility of making the plane unrepairable, and yet he’s wasting time polishing the paint and cleaning the interior. To be honest, most of what needs done will be dull as dishwater on video. There just no way to make drilling rivets, removing corrosion, replacing fuel bladders and replacing control cables look exciting. That’s why I would expect the 401 videos to become few and far between. And the whole “no logbooks” thing turns the whole idea of doing anything into an exercise in futility.

    My wife says:
    “Helicopter mechanic here! I don’t know if it’s the same with fixed wing aircraft, but our aircraft have serialized parts (think a VIN number on your car) that are a crucial part of our log books and records. If you could find some way to run the serial numbers through a database, it could tell you when those parts were last serviced & where- could lead you to the logbook itself. Also, aircraft undergo structural inspections every so often (i believe yearly, but for us, we have ACE inspections during every ‘phase’ at least). There may be a sticker somewhere on your bird that shows an inspector ID / insp. Date and location. Not sure how much this helps, but we’ve definitely tracked down some AWOL records with serial numbers and by getting ahold of prior inspectors! Happy hunting!”

    • @buckmurdock2500
      @buckmurdock2500 2 роки тому

      Identification of aeronautical parts has come a long way since 1968. They didn't serialized individual parts back then. Most fixed wing aircraft are not loaded with life limited components like a rotor wing aircraft. Components are repaired/replaced on condition. Can certainly identify who did the last inspection and maintenance from the registered owner, see if they are still in business and if they have any records. But otherwise, recreating lost maintenance records for a plane like this is not a big deal, current owner has most of the keys to this process, maybe he will part with this info if properly motivated $$. There are no life limited components. AD compliance has to be verified anyway and could change depending on what maintenance is done in prepping the plane for inspection.
