thanks Martin, was waiting on your review before purchasing so now ordered and fortunately warlord currently have free p&p for orders over $40 to USA. Like the sound of unit organization, I already have my units with men at arms mixed in with bow and bill as that does appear more likely
Hi Martin, thanks for this interesting and objective review by someone who knows and loves his Onions!...ho hum, looks like I'll be getting the plastic out again soon, a belated Xmas pressie to self. Another chapter in the Epic 'I blame Martin' saga😄👍
Excellent report! I can't wait to see you putting this one on the table, I like the idea of including Mem at Arms in the with the bows, that feels more aligned with the argument that each knight (read man at arms) kept his Retinue with him on the battlefield and fought as a Retinue. The Beaufort mentioned in the book is the middle one, the one that was beheaded at Hexham. Again you have made me want to play some HC! I may buy this just for the read
Really pleased you enjoyed it mate, I've been waiting a long time for this and I'm really happy with what's been put out. I think there is alot of gaming opportunities here 👍
Nice overview martin. Overall, it looks good. im definitely getting this. I laughed when you were rolling for your livery, and you got green and white for tudor 😂
Looks very good and it will certainly re-ignite my interest in the period and might finally spur me on to get the two Perry armies I have got to make and paint in my stash
I ordered this book in advance , Thanks for your review , very detailed , Oh dear I want this book Now, I will only try and do historical Battles only , only if I have the nessary Figuers , Right time to unpack my Ragged staf mins out / front rank figuers , time for more painting . Great for my Early Modern Studies .
A really nice review. We are not playing Hail Caesar but Never min the Billhooks. I think I will order this book and see, what we can adopt from that to our games!
Great review. Will you be reviewing the new Saga Age of Chivalry supplement when it's released? Would love to hear your thoughts on that covering the WOTR.
Thanks very much, thank for watching 👍 I hadn't planned on reviewing Age of Chivalry, I really like sage for my Age of Vikings etc, I'd be up for having a look at some point though 🙂
I’m impressed/relieved. Although I’m unsure about some of the RPG elements, but as you say, you don’t have to use those rules. 6 shots from archers….. even if you have only 3 rounds…. Could be devastating
I know, but then, it could be, means a unit can go from 0 to shaken in one very unlucky bout of shooting which I think is quite good. Means making sure certain units soak up the arrows, especially if they are in limited supply 👍
Different strokes for different folks - I'm a fan of adding some extra narrative bits to wargames, but if it's not your cup of tea then give 'em a miss. The archery thing I'll probably end up talking about on a podcast or something some time, but there's a rationale behind it I promise!
@Shardifier oh I will thank you, very kind. Actually I like narrative too as long as it doesn't become too involved and doesn't require lots of bookkeeping. I understand the logic of Arrowstorm as well - anyone reading history will - but will need to see how it plays out on the table. As Martin says you could shake an opponent in one shot which seems very tough. Ok you have to be lucky but that with the risk of break tests on 6 could spoil your day. Anyway we shall see on the table
Cool great video and some fantastic work on the book it's very tempting as I have never played it as dom would say very most 😂😂 all I have to do now is finish my over stuff first or win the lottery cool 😎 .it's was a great review thank you 👍👍🤠🤠
Damn - I mean it looks like this is so going to become a new project - I have been watching and following your WoR battles and always thought I did need to get started - I expect I will wait for the book to become available in stockists in Australia before ordering (it's not even available for preorder yet) - but it looks like a great resource for starting out and building upon with further research. I am really interested to see your thoughts on how the certain specific rules play out in a game. Do you think you might incorporate them into your ruleset maybe?
Really pleased to see you enjoyed the video and you liked the commentary - I'm not sure yet, I like making tweaks to everything, it's just part of the hobby for me but I will certainly be trying everything that I can from the book 👍
Sounds good , I have never liked the idea of MAA, Bill or Bow units , I have always said it should be a household unit with all 3 units , I cannot see a group of troops turning up and a officer saying " all MAA over there and Bill over there and Bow over here , It would not be good for command and control and worse for morale , just my thinking tho
The general idea was that things probably weren't nicely delineated with everyone organised by 'type' - but also it looks like some troops may have 'double hatted' e.g. give a nice strong longbowman a bill, and hey presto you have two troop types!
"every bowman with a bill at his back.." or something along those lines 😅 the great thing is we can interpret it so many ways, and all of them can be played out. I do like a heavily armed Longbowman to be fair 😁
@@owbnid there's not much, but there is a small bit in the battle generation section - but that sounds like something fun to put in the possible supplement for the supplement!
Not in the book no but could easily be added. That would be really interesting, we had a papal legate one game who excommunicated people, we essentially said that enemy units within X inches of him had to reroll on dice of there break test if the opponent wanted - same as the rule for elephants. That went well, then he was overrun and slaughtered by some angry handgunners if I remember correctly haha
They're not wholly removed, just removed as a separate unit and are now an upgrade, as units probably weren't nicely delineated by 'type'. From my understanding, and after some conversations with people more knowledgeable than I, this approach seemed reasonable - but if you really want some all-man at arms units, go for it!
I can understand that but the list is trying something a little different. There is always the option of just upgrading the MAA from a Bill unit and swapping the bases 👍
With the Men at arms could you still put down say 3 bases as you do and pay for the upgrade to make them Men at Arms but just not use the Shooting stats Maybe
Saluti dall' Italia
@@Shardifier we used Margaret in a few games, she acted like a commander in moving but made nearby units steady or tough fighters (can't remember which), we also let her take rally actions like a commander. To be honest, with your joint commander rules that would work really well as she would pair up well with Somerset and company.
@Shardifier I'm sure Warlord could make one of there monthly miniatures a Margaret of Anjou, complete with a nice little rule card or pdf 😁 that would get snapped up haha 👍
This is the part where I'll need to write a supplement to the supplement - but there are some Dramatis Personae in the scenarios, they just don't get big write-ups. That and maybe he IS just too over powered...
have already ordered this book , thanks for the great review.
Awesome stuff 😁
Nice work on the review. Willpick this up in the new year.
Thanks for watching 👍
I’ve been looking to get into hail Caesar for a while now, this book might’ve just sold me on it!
Awesome to hear, thanks for watching 😁

Great review and look into the new supplement. Very tempted for a new project in the new year!
Thanks very much 😁
A very fair review mate given your interest in the period. A good looking book that I'll pick up and use alongside your rules.
Thanks mate, glad you found it helpful 😁👍
Great review Martin 😊
I have it on pre order and now await its arrival as it looks like money well spent ..
Definitely, there is a lot of content in here that would work for other periods as well 👍

Yeah, that's the direction I took - things not being neatly lined up by 'type' in neat-ish units. I hope you enjoy it if you do get it!
@Shardifier well I have never played HC, but this does sound like an excellent gaming resource. If Martin endorses it then it must be very good
Really pleased you enjoyed it mate, I've been waiting a long time for this and I'm really happy with what's been put out. I think there is alot of gaming opportunities here 👍
The one we've been waiting for!
Without doubt 😁
You could put a base of men-at-arms into the centre of your bill-and-bow unit and put the billmen behind as supporting ranks.
That's an option definitely 👍

Does the WOTR book have any relgious rules within it ? Like the support of The pope ?
that's a good question...can an Army or a Leader be Excommunicated ?

Spinal Tap called, they want their hair back.
😅 I had the same at work today funnily enough, could be worse, least it wasn't Bon Jovi
So there are Livery counters too?
Unfortunately, and I have met and been emailed by many 😅
Have Warlord removed the Shield wall supplement? I can't find it anywhere
I'm not sure, I can't either, may be worth an email?
Great review. Interesting at the livery page (min 7:18) the Earl of Oxford colors are changed vice versa... Harhar! But who cares?
Ha, oh yeah, it's the mirror of the CofA, ah well, just say it's the other side of the flag 👀😁

"With MODEL soldiers", as opposed to TOY soldiers. Imagine my shock.
😅
You've already got it??
I did, Warlord kindly sent me a copy for review as it's the period I'm probably most passionate about 👍
are there rules for margeret of anjou?

Very interesting to see how they have "borrowed" a lot of unique features and popular mechanics from Nevermind the Billhooks
I've been told this on Facebook too - so I guess I'm going to have to give Billhooks a go finally, to see where there's overlaps!
I suppose there's only so many ways you can cut a rule before there will be similarities with other rules set at the same period 👍
Yes, thought the limiting of archery to only three turns of ‘arrow storm’ looked familiar.
