Mate I dead set think you have hit the nail on the head with this video we all lose fish from time to time but the hook set then letting the fish swim is a massive thing so helpful all angles out there and very well explained thanks Robbie 😊
Great video Robbie, you're right that there are a lot of factors to think about. Your tactic of having a solid drag for the hook up and then backing off a bit if it is a solid fish is a good one. I do that a lot myself on the big Snapper and Mulloway The only time I go with objective drag settings is in the game fishing world where we set the drag at 1/3 of the line's breaking strain with a set of scales. The reason for that is we use mono and it pulls the stretch out and then puts direct pressure on the hook to punch it into a Marlin's boney mouth. There are drag adjustments during the fight as well but we always know where on the big reels where that 1/3 drag pressure point is as a baseline.
Wholly smokes, were's the goatee ????? I remember an old Richmond footballer, at a fishing show, said a rule of thumb for setting drag is: half the breaking strain straight off the reel and a third of the breaking strain off the rod tip. Another great video Robbie..... thanks
I set mine tight then undo the drag one turn then test the line to see if it working if not i go 3 on my drag then test it then if it starts dragging i just leave it . When running circle hooks i let a bit of line out floating on the water then watch it when it starts heading out i slowly start wonding it in with no striking let the hook do the work
I remember watching a fishing show back in the late 90’s/ early 00’s was stated that for a rough baseline drag set, the rod should have a nice, kind of natural bend in it and then adjust based off fish species. Pretty sure i’ve dropped all my carp cause the drag is roughly set for 15cm bream 😂
Depending on where you have the rod. If it’s not in a holder. Loose enough for line to to come off when without moving the rod. Otherwise when fighting fish just enough to keep a slight bend in the rod
When ii catch a barramundi my mate starts yelling Don't give it a chance skull drag it skull drag it! Ha ha.! Very interested in the drag vidio Robbie.
Hey robbie whats the go with breeding season, does it make them harder to catch and less agressive/ less prone to bite. Great video champ, thumbnail really Pulled me in (haha get it🤓 ), Great vid, keep it up 👍
Thanks mate. Haha I may well have been. Who knows? If you search "robbiefishing how to use the anti reverse" you will find a very popular video that I made a few years ago. 👍👍
Hi Mel, I'm not sure what I sold. LOL 🤣 This video was a tutorial on how to set the drag. If it's the rod you're after I bought mine at Anaconda, and if it's the reel that can be bought at any tackle stores that sell Shimano products.
Sorry Robbie this is not a good way to teach new fisher persons how to use the drag as reel makers state 1/3 of the line class . This is how records are set ! with a good drag setting a 6kg fish can be caught with 3kg line and only 1kg of drag . For playing with the drag with a fish on the line this only make things a lot harder as now the drag washers have lost friction with each other you don't know how many kg you have set as it stops then started to run again it might take twice the power to start the drag running again and snap your line. The reason no drag button they don't know what size line you are going to put on your reel ps love your videos long time sub keep up the good work 👍👍👍

Thought I'd drop a line - glad I dragged myself off the couch to watch. Reely good, got me hooked, right to the point ....

Thanks mate. I've never been big game fishing but it sounds like a lot of fun.
Great tips Robbie, I agree keep it simple! enough pressure to set the hook and adjust accordingly.
Thanks so much mate.
Great explanation Robbie.
We've all buggered up drag settings and lost fish, but what your saying makes a lot of sense.
Cheers mate.👍
Thanks so much Bruce.
Used your tips this morning my hook up rate really improved caught 3 lovely rainbows 35-40cm mark. Keep the videos coming love watching. Cheers Paul
WOW That is EXCELLENT feedback, well done on your trout mate. This comment has really made my day.

Thanks mate. That old Richmond footballer knows his stuff.
Its really great information well done i really hate people touching my rod and touching the drag really gets to me big time
Thanks buddy.
Good tips
Robbie, keep up the good work!
Thanks so much champ.
The way my dad taught me was to put a decent bend in the rod & adjust the drag to just slip at the bend you want in the rod.
My dad taught me the same thing. Now I really hate people touching my rod and touching the drag
Correct, pulling directly at the reel vs through the rod are very different.
@Chris Coyne bro its not that deep it doesnt take longer than a minute to fix the drag 🤣
@@vascor9344 😂😂😂😂 it just really gets to me big time hahaha like if my brother does it he will know about it
@@chriscoyne4827 Do you slip it in if he does it?

Thanks Mick. I don't believe in over complicating anything. Haha 😂

Thanks mate, haha makes sense. It's a bit the same with Murray cod. If you give them an inch they will find a snag. LOL

Thanks mate. It depends on what species you are targeting. They're all a bit different in breeding season.
Haha pun intended. LOL

I just have the drag super tight and hope for the best.

BEATS setting the drag on your DRESS! ;oP
Haha did you notice my HORRIBLE spelling mistake. 😂😂
@@robbiefishing Nope! Totally missed it!
You UA-camrs always need to have a loose drag to add that excitement …😜

Shhh stop giving away all the secrets 😂
Hahaha I have been accused of that in the past. LOL 😂
I know when I make noise like your drag system on that reel I am to bloody cold . Lol😂. It is also used to tier fish out like the big ones I get lol .
Hahaha
Mate - can you do a vid on the reverse reel 😊
That was a old huge yella in the freeway dam - seen that smile on ya face… haha when you said it was a carp haha

Thank you so much. 🙏
You should do a reaction video where u react to your old videos
Great idea.
Then once you have worked the drag out, navigated it away from snags, let it swim for abit. You can land it with your landing net left at home 😅
Hahahaha that's correct. LOL 🤣
well you sold me robbie, now where do i buy one .

All depends on what fish you are going for.
