I feel your pain about throwing things in the trash; so many people get hung up on this, even myself! My parents were both born in 1925 and were children during the Great Depression. I inherited many items from my parents when they passed away and they had a tendency to hold on to most things that they had purchased. It's been hard for me to move away from the "keep everything" mind set but have been working toward minimizing down to only things I will use or find beautiful. I don't want my children to have to go through a bunch of items that are kept for the wrong reasons! Thank you for saying it's ok to throw things in the trash, few people will address this sticking point in decluttering our houses!
Nothing lasts forever. It's strange that people in the decluttering genre don't say that more often. I like that you're looking into the root causes of why decluttering is hard and that we might experience roadblocks because we're subconsciously afraid of change.
Years ago, I bought myself a London Fog trench coat, because I always wanted one; however, I never wore it because I never had anywhere fancy to wear it. I took it out of the closet, and it still fits. Well, I cleaned it, and have started to wear it as my regular autumn coat (it helps that I have a new Ecosusi sachel to pair it with).
Great video! I love that you are still gardening. My wood raised beds are rotting, so I need to replace them this winter. Nothing lasts forever, you are so right!
I appreciate this. So many people get in analysis paralysis of the “perfect” way to declutter or manage their inventory, so they never start or get stuck and stop. I like your message to do the next best or right thing for YOU.
This was such a great video. You really hit the nail on the head with the point sometimes things have to go in the trash/ bin. There is simply nowhere to donate it to. Things sometimes cannot be saved.
Just wanted to say thank you so much. The first time I found your podcast I cried because I was so overwhelmed with decluttering. Your intro felt so deeply relatable & I really appreciate this podcast. I put an episode on while I declutter cause it helps me to break things down into manageable chunks and it feels like I have someone encouraging and chatting with me while I work.
I just decluttered my cap and gown from 1999. I am finally at the stage where I'm putting a lot more thought into why im holding on to things. It's an evolutionary process, but I'm so glad that I'm able to be more intentional. ❤
The trash can has become my new best friend and I never thought I would say those words. We don’t have recycling anywhere in our area and I had to get over my excuse that I wasn’t getting rid of things because it needs to go to a certain place. ❤
I'm a January baby so I like the winter season but I also live in Arizona. lol I have a fiddle leaf fig and they do not like to be moved either so I get that. As for not letting things go I had some clothing that was in great condition but I never wore: Two shirts and a pair of pants I purchased and over the years but never reached for, a barely worn shirt and a pair of pants that shrunk in the wash, two pairs of workout shorts that I never wore because of shallow pockets, several t shirts and a shirt that was a gift that was losing shape. I placed them all (along with some other items) in a luggage set that is also in excellent condition that I no longer use and left it all in the downstairs closet for well over a year. This week I took the luggage and its contents to the Goodwill. Afterwards I felt so much lighter. I finally stopped myself from hanging onto things that aren't getting used. Now someone else can use what I just released.
Thank you for sharing this. I am lucky as i volunteer for my local British Red Cross charity shop in the UK 🇬🇧 and I can take clothing which isn't any good eg holes in it and it gets put in rag bags. The rag man comes once a week to our shop and collects the bags and we get money for them for the charity.
I am a perpetual minimalist. I make regular trips to the donation center. I also love to shop thrift stores. I have many items that i regularly getting compliments when i wear these items.
Oh I agree, the 1 hour time difference (uk) affects me so much.. I wake up at 5am instead of 6am and I can feel it. But I also feel more ready to take on the day before my household even gets up. They wake up to the washing machine going, and the tumble dryer warms the house up, which is actually pretty cool 😅 So I just feel like I get more done. My outside plants don't need my attention so much so my indoor plants are loving life (I've just invested in indoor grow lights for the first time ever) So I'm just going with November and next will be the Christmas decorations (yes, I have Gringe for a husband 😂) Thank you for your video ❤ Hppe everyone has a fantastic Thanksgiving and Christmas 😊 x
Great video! Love the tree analogy. I take my old clothes on one last trip and leave them behind in a trash can somewhere. It helps me let go of things that aren't good enough to donate. I'm going through 13 boxes of Christmas decor collected from 1970s till now. Letting my kids choose what they want. Donating what none of us want right now. Feels great! It's the first time I've let go of anything related to Christmas. I'm actually starting to look at things that were my parents and grandparents. Starting to question the news to keep things my kids don't care about. I will ask them before letting anything go. But I really am coming to the realization everything is disposable. It's taken me a long time to get to this place. The upside is I am beginning to see my home getting lighter, more open. I started the decluttering process to help my kids. But my husband and I are reaping the benefits now. Love it!
When the Spring is coming I start to get tired because the weather is getting hot. Live in Brasil so by November I am sweating and feel like staying in my bedroom with the ac on until.... Winter time.
My MIL has a hard time moving through life stages and it causes her alot of discontentment that others can do so easier. She is still the full-time caregiver of a special needs 36 y/o and as much as anyone has tried to encourage evolution for both of their mental and developmental health, she hasn't been able to let go the super-mom identity and gets very upset when I refer to my BIL as a special needs adult.
But I really don't want to throw away my favorite shirt! Holes in elbows aren't visible, right? I don't see them unless I look in the mirror! I need to throw it away. But...
I like to listen to you in your videos but this podcast, if this is considered one, I could not focus on the theme. Perhaps of the audio echo or sth else...

That’s awesome Deanna
Omg, I didn't know you could get rid of your cap and gown. I thought you had to keep it forever ❤😂 great job
I actually just decluttered mine from 1998 last month. Good job!! It really is freeing to take on this new mindset. Keep it up! 😊
Ummmm, I decluttered mine from 1982. I kept the tassel, though.😂
@@dfrost7934 me too!

So true
For me decluttering and minimalism is happiness.....it is to live beautifully !
I agree!
All so true, and so helpful! Thank you! I hope something great happens for YOU today, Robyn! 😊
Thanks!!! 💕✨

You sound like my friend who lives in Arizona
AZ Goodwills are the best I always find such great items at such low prices! In Ocotillo and Chandler anyway : )
GREAT content - you definitely have made a niche in this genre and I am really connecting with it. Thank you!
Thanks so much!

Welcome Joan!
We have all your snowbirds down here in AZ!
You sure do!
Saver’s recycles what can’t be sold, and so does H & M in case you have any in your area.
Interesting! H&M takes their own fabrics for recycling?
Do you have a Salvation Army thrift store? Ours up North here collects old material to use as rags or recycles them.
Thanks Juanita!
@@MinimalistHome you are welcome:)

Goooood morning!
But I really don't want to throw away my favorite shirt! Holes in elbows aren't visible, right? I don't see them unless I look in the mirror! I need to throw it away. But...
I kept my holey shirt for a while ☺️ only when I started getting cold did I declutter it. You do what you want 😻
