  • Thank you everyone for continuing to support my wine channel and my wine reviews.
Francois Leroy established the wine business in 1850s and founded Maison Leroy in 1868. The Leroy family had a very close relationship with the de Villiane family, who own Domaine Romanee Conti.
In 1942, the Leroy family bought an interest in DRC, which they still own today (they have a 25% interest in DRC today)
Leroy has is currently managed by Lalou Bize Leroy, who has iconic status in Burgundy. She co managed DRC with Aubert de Villiane from 1974 to 2002.
For many years, Leroy only purchased grapes from growers to make their wine. In 1988, with a cash injection from the Japanese department store giant Takashimaya, they began to purchase their own vineyards in Vosne Romanee and Gevrey Chambertin (about 21 hectares). Once they had their own vineyards, the founded Domaine Leroy. Leroy also owns Domaine d’Auvenay.
Maison Leroy wines use grapes from other growers whereas Domaine Leroy wines are made from grapes from their own vineyards. In general, Domaine Leroy wines are more expensive than Maison Leroy wines although all Leroy wines are exceedingly expensive.
To differentiate between a Domaine Leroy and Maison Leroy wine with Leroy, look at the line below "Appellation Controlie" on the label. On a Domaine wine, it will read "Mis en bouteille au Domaine". On a Maison wine, it will read "Mis en Bouteille par". Further, the next line, where the big Leroy logo continues the phrase will say "Leroy Proprietaire a Vosne-Romanee, Cote d'Or, France" on a Domaine wine and will say "Leroy Negociant a Auxey Meursault..." on a Maison wine. I think Domaine wines have a red foil to cover the cork whereas Maison wines have a white foil,

Great and extensive review of this beautiful wine! During my last visit to Burgundy last year I’ve really started to appreciate Volnay and Pommard a lot more! I think you are one of the best wine related UA-cam channels right now!

Rick: thank you so much for your kind comments. Pommard to me is a good entry point into Burgundy as the wines have structure and more tannins some other regions. Please like, subscribe and keep watching! Cheers!

Dorm mma: I don't have enough experience with Leroy wines to answer this knowledgeably but all I can say is that all Leroy wines I have had in recent memory have been great. I can't recall having a Bourgogne Leroy so I can't answer your questions. Cheers!
