  • "His name was Del Williams from Detroit, Michigan...Del taught me a whole lot of stuff. He taught me how to catch punches and fire off punches...I'm the only one that can teach it because it's my style," stated world-class trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr., who recalled how he learned the shoulder roll style and perfected it to what it is today. Plus, you don't want to miss his story about how he had to use his skills on a grade school teacher. Check it out!

    It's not Dale Williams. It's Del Williams along with Henry Grooms who taught him the shoulder roll. Both trainers were from the Kalamazoo Boxing Academy where he trained. Del Williams is most notable for also training Leon Spinks. Henry Grooms co-founded KBA with Eddy Bridges. Also Del Williams didn't invent the shoulder roll, it's something that many fighters from Michigan used as part of their repertoire. The shoulder roll or "Philly Shell" was developed independently, in various urban centers, by gym rats or gym warriors. If you want to see someone who fights pretty similar to Floyd watch historic footage of the masterful George Benton.

      @@davesgamingtv3069 True it's Michigan style. Philly shell is more of the George Foreman style of just having huge arms that you wrap around your belly and use your big hands to protect to the chin. Crab style is more of using your arms and elbows to deflect punches and leaving your hands open to throw counters while you use your shoulder tucked in to protect your chin.

    I think what Floyd Sr is saying you have to learn how to slip and catch/block punches conventionally in a conventional stance and then learn how to roll a lot of fighters just want to roll but don't know the basics of even slipping a punch and it shows in their fights you might have to take some beatings in the gym and learn how to tweak the style

      Heavy Hitters Boxing smartest comment ive read in a while. I dont know how to box, but what you just said applies to almost everything. Always start with and master tha basics! ALWAYS!
      It makes the whole learning process a lot smoother and easier.
      I believe the best fighters arent the ones that are amazingly fast or strong (obviously this helps), but the ones that can predict and out maneuvre their opponents accordingly landing accurate blows. Basically guys that are smart. And that always begins with mastering the basics of any fighting style.

    The difference between Sr and Jr is size. Sr is a natural 147 and fought his opponents straight up where as Floyd who is 135/140 naturally has to dodge more and outbox bigger sized fighters. Canelo, GGG and Oscar are bigger fighters. Today's boxers are more rehydrated athletes than fighters.

    One of the secrets to the shoulder roll is the stance has to be perfectly aligned so you can throw your straight right down the pipe. Which means you have to continuously adjust so your not exposing your backside which will have you turn right into a straight of the opponent.

      @carpenter155 2 роки тому

      Or give up the back side of the shoulder, which is the shoulder roll’s weakness. You hit someone in the back of the shoulder a couple times they’ll either give up on the roll or their arm won’t be working right. Either way, shoulder roll is nullified.

    Good interview. I wish it would've gone more in depth with how he was exactly taught the shoulder roll. Like did he do drills first? Did he jump straight to sparring and was told to try out the shoulder roll until he got it? Did he practice rolling the shoulder to block the right hand by itself first? Did he learn how to block the jab, right hand and hook separately in the beginning? Or was it all done together?

      jimenez1221 ray Leonard had fast hands and the best footwork. Floyd gave Leonard a tougher time than other fighters cause it was harder for Leonard to land clean punches. plus Floyd didn't rely on footwork as much as Floyd Jr does. if u watch Floyd Jr his footwork gets him out of range by not staying in the pocket as long. I believe if Floyd sr, would use better footwork he that would make him a greater fighter even though I think Floyd sr was a great fighter

    People still call it Philly shell, yet he was taught by a detroit style coach! Forget the name and focus on the mechanics.

      Because it came from Philadelphia legend George Benton and some Philadelphia fighters, and Philadelphia has the most boxing champions than any other cities. Besides Joe Louis and Sugar Ray Robinson, Detroit boxing champions were great in late 1970and 1980 and on. Let's say Michigan fighters.

      @@michaelcampbell5849 I'm just saying people from gonna call it Philly, but the Detroit people will wanna call it Detroit. The point is, the name takes second place to the importance of focusing on the mechanics of the technique.

    His style...? I thought he said Dale something from Michigan taught it to him. As for perfecting it, it wasn't perfect enough for him to beat Sugar Ray Leonard. It's Floyd Mayweather Jr., if anyone, that perfected it. Also, everyone has their differences, so what works for Floyd may not work for another boxer. I think it's silly when boxers like Andre Berto come out of nowhere thinking "I'm going to use the shoulder roll tonight". Of course we all saw that it didn't work for him, nor was he doing it correctly. Another example was Broner. It's the same with Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do. Although a lot of it is common sense, like the fastest way to get from point A to point B, is with a straight line. However, we see some students of Jeet Kune Do failing in MMA fights. That may partially be a consequence of former Bruce Lee students that are teaching the style, but weren't officially approved to take over like Lee did with Filipino martial artist Daniel Inosanto.

      Floyd Sr. said his style because his style is his style. He has every right say that. Why is it that everything that comes out of his mouth has to scrutinized and over analyzed? Just because he said "perfect" doesnt mean that he means that literally. Leonard thought he perfected his style, and he did, but it didnt always work out for him did it? I wish guys would stop laying in wait to jump all over a member of the mayweather family says. It shows the jealously and contempt many have for their success in boxing.

      The style that Manny Pacquiao uses belongs to Freddie Roach, even if Freddie couldn't do it perfectly himself. Would you say that Eddie Futch has no claim to the styles of Ken Norton and Joe Frazier just because he himself was never a great boxer? Floyd Sr. has a much more impressive record than most great trainers--criticizing his in-ring accomplishments and acting like they have any reflection on the style he teaches is nonsensical.

    • @trvth1s
      @trvth1s 10 років тому

      Connor Ruebusch None of those guys invented those styles.
      Roach learned his style from his amateur coaches.
      Floyd Sr. didn't make up any style. Go watch a George Benton or Charley Burley fight plez

    • @heavyhands1383
      @heavyhands1383 10 років тому

      George Benton and Charley Burley didn't fight like Mayweather. Look past the superficial similarities and you'll see that.
      Roach learned his style from Eddie Futch, who trained him and taught him to be a trainer, and from studying fighters that he admired.
      In any case, no one said anything about "invented." Nothing in boxing is truly invented, because it's all been done before. That doesn't mean styles can't be attributed to the people who developed them.

    To the guy with the chip skylark not funny joke. Here's a 60 something aged man just like every box,stepped in that ring and fought.Mayweather Sr put his health and life out their everytime he boxed and now i'm listening to him he's sharp minded explaining the shoulder and counter punching. On the other hand Quirro Green you've probably never had a fight in your life including grade school.And if you're thinking about being a comedian you're trash at that also,if you can't listen at these ex and today's pro boxer's without trying to be funny you should do something that interest you.
