- In December 2022 I started a dumb account with the idea of only wishing on the weapon banner. I wanted to know how bad it could be. The answer? Somehow worse than I thought. As such, I had to end of the series in the only way 5 star weapons deserve.

The ultimate symbolic point of this series, that I think destroying all the weapons at the end represents, is thus: the account is barely affected by what I did at the end.
Despite invalidating the resources spent, it functionally makes little difference. Nothing would prevent me from now pulling Ayaka on the account and getting value from Ayaka now that I don't have Mistsplitter. She doesn't need it. Weapons are just a way to give stats to your characters, and relative to the difficulty of acquiring them, they are one of the less efficient ways to do so, and they will not be relevant without the other things (characters) available to you to make use out of the stats they even give.
Something I probably should've mentioned in the video is how it kinda is indirectly a good thing that the weapons are largely just bait more often than not, because if they weren't, we would likely be in a state of needing to get 5 star weapons to make certain characters feel viable. That is not the state of the game. No character requires 5 star weapons. They can be nice for their higher stats if you have them, but they don't design the fun parts of the game (characters) to need weapons to function. This is a good thing. A really good thing, tbh. So given the choice between the reality we have wherein 5 star weapons are very low value and 5 star weapons being necessary to make characters feel functional? I'd choose the reality we are currently in. 5* weapons being less valuable is better for the health of the game. What this then means for this account is that despite deleting all of those weapons, nothing has changed. I could still login and play the game like normal.
Thanks to all who joined my channel due to Weapons Only. I hope you will stick around as I continue to make content on stuff that I think is actually enjoyable about Genshin rather than the miserable mess that is the weapon banner.
Theres lots of complicated feelings I had about the Genshin as whole due to playing on this account for a year, and that was why I mentioned in the video that I was originally going to make a video essay about it. Lots of more complicated stuff I could talk about in a more "professional" manner may show up in videos I have in the future. Originally I really did want to end the series off more properly, and that was what I was slowly working towards. But after not logging into the account I realized how much I truly never wanted to touch the account again. And honestly, weapon banner is so garbage it doesn't even deserve the respect of anything more than this rambly video is. I'd rather think about and play Genshin in ways that are fun, and wishing or making videos on the Weapons Only ain't it. I don't think the videos were beneficial to the Genshin community either.
I knew it was a mistake going in, but it is kinda impressive 5 star weapons managed to exceed my expectations for how bad it would be. If for some reason you want to make a challenge account of your own, I personally recommend sticking to a weapon type, or something like standard banner only/chronicle banner only.

I also had a weapons only account and I did drop it before you-like you guessed. To me it did serve its purpose though, I wanted to play an alt account at the time but figured one without restrictions would get too boring/too similar to my main account very quickly. But something like your polearms only would have been to restrictive for me. In the end it filled some time and made me play teams I otherwise wouldnt have played. Then the novelty wore of and it started feeling like a high-effort low-payoff version of my main account. So next time I want to play an alt account again, I'll make a new one all over again. If the account taught me anything, its nothing about genshin's weapons, rather its that pre-AR 45 genshin is a whole different game from post-AR 45 and one that I kind of missed.
clearly the thing to do here is I'm going to make alt accounts until I get an early dehya on the chronicled and make her my main, thatll be my restriction for the next account! XD

Yeah, the key is to not put too many restrictions on you, which can depend on your preferences. At the very least, restricting ability to meaningfully acquire different characters is the main mistake with a challenge account imo.
You are definitely right about pre-AR45 genshin, I didn’t have the thought to mention how that was the best part of playing Weapons Only. But early AR for Weapons Only is basically the same as early AR for a normal account, so its not even interesting compared to restricting to a weapon type, wherein it can be a genuine puzzle dealing without having access to Lisa/Amber/Kaeya/Traveler early on
@@shychiorithe thing that 100% puts me off that idea right now is we just have no idea how hoyo will run the banner long term yet. Its up right now, but when will it be back? What will be on it when it eventually comes back? There's nothing stopping them from taking it away for several months and than just giving us the exact same one all over again because they didn't have another lineup of 'undesirables' ready yet. Now I dont actually think itll be quite that bad, but it could be and I'd rather not invest time into an account that has so many unknowns tied to it.
To anyone considering it, I'd personally recommend holding of until the next one is announced. Just by seeing how long a break there was in between the two, who they put on the banner next and what changes they might have made after this current 'trial run' of the system should show how viable it is as an idea.
Honestly would have preferred seeing you convert this account into an account where you pull characters rather than griefing it and abandoning it. Like maybe making it into an account where you pull for characters you don't pull for on your main just to try them out or make it into saving the account by pulling 5 stars you think would go well with what you have. I guess it's already too late, but it feels like time and resources wasted to just destroy all the weapons
Yeah, that was kinda my point: the time and resources was wasted. It was a joke, sure, but the meaning therein was that basically nothing changes. The time and resources was wasted and destroyed from the very moment of deciding to wish only on the weapon banner in the first place, and destroying the actual weapons is symbolic of that, for me at least. It felt fantastic to destroy each. and. every. one. of. them.
To illustrate my point, I ask you this: What prevents me from converting the account to something else, as you suggest? I still have the account, I could easily convert the series to “Fav weapon only” or whatever else if need be. I dont need the 5 star weapons to give pulling characters value. The characters have a lot of value unto themselves by nature of the games design, so if I do want to start using the account to pull for characters I dont get elsewhere, I can still do that lol, nothing is stopping me. It just means that if I get Ayaka on the account, oh no Id have to deal with dealing slightly less dmg without the purple sword. But shed still function. The weapon enables nothing, and is one of the less important aspects to making Ayaka perform well. True destruction of the account would require destroying the four star weapons and notably the artifacts. Destroying the five stars does almost nothing.
For now, its not worth my time logging into this account to even farm primos to be able to wish. But nothing will stop me from now reusing it as a blank template to do something else with.
Really sad to see this series end, but I understand weapon banner sucks

Interestingly i've had my no-wish account for over a year now, I'm still super into building that alt account. I don't make It a point to log into it religiously like my main account but i still find it fun on occasion and enjoy the challenge
Have you tried to clear the hard content (Abyss) in the game? I have fun from playing around with different characters is one thing Ive learned is abundantly clear to me after playing on Weapons Only. No wish accounts honestly arent that different from weapons only in the aspect of acquiring characters, since characters are so much rarer. So many of the relevant characters came from the Paimon shop/event rewards just like a no wish account. In other words, I think a no wish account and a weapon banner only account are more similar to each other than either are to a normal account. Weapon Banner only just has the upside of five star weapons, and very inconsistent additional characters (like Sucrose).
Anyhow, Abyss was always the goal for weapons only, since its the only true test of mechanical relevance in the game-its the only thing that even stands a chance of making 5 star weapons be relevant for anything other than drip (so long as they continue designing them to only give stats to characters). The abyss was necessary to test that question, and the answer was they make little to no difference relative to having more characters for more team options. A no wish account would be worse off, obviously, hence why I asked if youd bothered with Abyss. I certainly wouldnt. I feel like the enjoyment of a no wish account comes entirely from the idea of not having to wish at all (a pressure Weapons Only ever had) and just enjoying the exploration, which still will present some challenges of course.
If you just play Genshin to vibe and explore OW, a no wish account like yours is a good example of how unnecessary it is to feel the need to pull characters for large aspects to the games content (story obviously has 0 reason to own specific characters, and exploration has reasons, but no actual need as you technically just need the 7 elements available to explore anything, which you get access to for free).
that ending was wild~ but i get your point, there was a time where my feedback for surveys was "stop giving er problems to new characters or everyone is gonna be on fav", now i put everyone on fav and call it a day, stat stick weapons aren't that great either, i've been struggling to build xiao (jade) and heizou (lost p) for months! especially since furina and marash... that set. anyway, thanks for the video and i hope you keep doing shenanigans that you enjoy! c:

I really love Prototype Amber on him for not only being a good DPS option for Neuvi (HP% good and reduces ER needs, which increases DPS stats you can put on him in artifacts), but it also turns him into the teams healer. All that I usually want for healing my off fielders is a little bit of healing, and proto amber fully suffices for that.

I'm also managing a challenge account (First Eight Only) that I like sharing vids about. I started the challenge last June and I'm still enjoying it, despite certain osbtacles I'm facing in combat. (I'm far from reaching endgame so I'm technically still in my honeymoon phase.) Making content out of it definitely helps me continue grinding though, I wonder how long I would've kept playing if it was just for myself.
Yeah, I didnt bother bringing up the content factor for how long I continued playing because its impossible to disconnect that aspect for me lol
As someone whose only 5* weapon is Skyward Blade(from the standard banner) that end fucking hurt to watch 😅 It's unfortunate how the series turned out. I thought the series had an interesting premise and was neat to watch especially seeing the game played differently due a limited number of characters

Speaking of billets, it's a lot better if we have billets as the last reward in the basic and the upgraded version of the battle pass along side with the current reward.

It would also be nice that the first time you face the weekly boss, all types of billet would be a guaranteed drop. Well the more realistic is to choosing one of the 5 billet types.
I pull for weapons alot simply because im impulsive 😭 and ive come to realize most of the time a really good r5 4* is on par or even better than an r1 5* most of the time

Didnt know about that. That further reinforces my belief that they are purposely stingy with them as a malicious form of game design trying to push you to wish on weapon banner. Just gacha game BS yeah, but it makes the game a worse experience even for someone like me who often wishes on weapon banner on my main account, but I still want billets for the relevant craftables. Hoyo seems to treat billet boxes as so valuable they decided we only get them for doing exploration, but only once every two years lol. We got one for Chasm exploration, and then Chenyu Vale has one too. Thats way too little.

One of the things gacha apologists fail to grasp by saying "oh, you don't really need character X, you don't really need character Y, you can play with characters A, B, C and those are either free or easy to get" is that if in a gacha game you fail to pull characters that you personally enjoy, then the whole experience feels like shit. What if I hate characters A, B, C? I will then have a bad experience. Playing a gacha game with characters you enjoy vs with characters you dislike, is like playing two different games, even though it's the same story/ quests/ world/ etc. And this video kind of touches on it and proves it. What actually should be said "you don't need weapon X, Y, or Z, but you do actually need characters you like".
Yeah. Notably I had a few characters I liked in the game to be clear, but I didnt have enough of the other characters/their constellations for stuff to feel enjoyable to play around with. DPS Sucrose is 10x more fun, even without C6 Faruzan, on my main account because I have so many more options to play around with that are not accessible on Weapons Only. Youd think the 5* weapons were a meaningful contributor to doing something like DPS Sucrose, but it barely was
Honestly I’m glad to see this account go. On top of your lack of enjoyment of it, I don’t feel like it really transformed anything or did anything to pull only on the weapon banner but still mostly just play tired meta 4* teams (the way you said you’d need C6 Benny to get full bonus for Mistsplitter on Kaeya when you have Chongyun who also likes melt set ups & have Candace for freeze).
Polearms only is a LOT more interesting because it requires a significant amount of strategy for puzzles and combat content. Same with the videos on your main account where you have more freedom and resources to try out of the norm builds and teams for characters.
I was hoping this series would be more about trying to see if weapons could help bridge the damage gap with lesser used/less meta characters to try to appreciate them more, but it didn’t really delve into that that much. Nor did you seem to revisit many characters you did one off attempts for like Amber later when your account was more established. Tbh I kinda lost interest in the series myself cuz it didn’t really showcase your creativity… like I see another braindead basic XQ team I click off.
So go really good riddance. Nice to see you get some catharsis and actual enjoyment foddering the 5*s. Excited to see you just focus on more fresh ideas (perhaps playing in/co-oping with your viewers’ own challenge accounts?) & stuff you’re actually passionate about!
Yeah, I tested (and calced) a lot of things not shown in videos, and all I can say is that it never felt like I had the things I needed to do interesting things. Weapons do little to nothing to bridge the damage gap compared to just having more options to make strong teams. They are fun to have in conjunction with characters that actually enable fun teams, because 5 star weapons can make building characters easier by nature of giving more baseline DPS stats making needing to get those stats elsewhere (notably artifacts) less necessary. In the example you gave with Amber, despite the time gap, I do not think there is really anything more I couldve done with her tbh. Not in a way that makes a difference enough to suddenly make it so having a 5 star weapon on her was now relevant at the very least
Never made a weapons only account, but I have made 4 accounts and gotten 1 to ar60 and the others all over ar50, but as it's far too much of a timesink to play more than 1 I gave up on the others haha, so I don't fault you one bit for being done with this account.
Yeah, that was probably a factor as well. Weapons Only realistically took the most time to play on of my three accounts I logged into last year, but that was just an effect of me spending a lot of time trying to make the most of it

Surprised by how much better my weapons only account was than yours. Rven though I took a break from it due to not having time to play it as well as my main account. Got 2 redhorns and 1 beacon on my first 30 rolls since coming back to it in this patch. Crazy luck.

I created a Weapons Only account as I was inspired by you, I did stop playing on it, but purely because, 1. I have way too many accounts and 2. I accidently did a sungle pull on character banner and got Navia, rendering the account: not weapons only, and it feels like such a waste to not use her when i had no other accounts with her at the time. I would honestly kill to have your weapons only account, I love restricting my accounts, and I would have been able to keep up with if I wasn't starting from 0 with it, and I don't care about 36 starring either. I do agree that most people would have stopped for the same reason as you though. And it sucks that this account is being left to collect dust.

idk if you mentioned it in the video (if you did.. oops), but something i was a little concerned about recently was how arlecchino's bis will presumably be the first weapon that actually affects a character visually (i think initially it was that her na animations wouldn't have the scythe effect at all without her signature, but now it seems to be it's just less cool/opaque) which makes me wonder how far they'll go in regards to giving extra visual incentives for owning a character and their weapon - though considering the effect changed once already it could change again, and i also should add i don't usually trust leaks unless it's stuff from the beta server (which it was , in this instance) so. orz. who knows
as long as it doesn't effect gameplay in a major way i don't think it's THAT concerning, just weird how they're trying to introduce a new 'incentive' for pulling for 5* weapons on an already awful banner

Honestly, because of the fact that weapons end up being so niche (Arles weapon being another niche one), I think one of the best actual reasons to get them is their visual appeal. I also think this stuff with Arlecchino and her phantom scythe is also the way they can do different weapon types on a hitbox level (while still allowing use of existing weapons). So I think its fine, so long as we have other weapon options that are good enough on the character to not feel artificially pushed towards pulling five stars. Eg I dont want situations like HSR has with Acheron coming out in a few days, who basically has one four star option and her signature weapon as an option.
i just started genshin and my first 5 star was chiori as cool as it was i had to grind for inazuma and go across the map for fontaine oh and i have like 2 characters that work with her
Yeah, the inazuma drops issue is kinda why it is confusing that they keep making characters (and weapons, new event weapon needs an inazuma enemy drop) forcing newer players like you to do stuff like that. Then you start playing the story and going specific places not because you want to but because the game makes you to be able to level stuff

General vibe Ive gotten personally and from others is that the key to a fun challenge account is not restricting access to characters too much. (Unless doing a no wish account, someone else in the comments mentioned that)

The billets are a joke I’ve been playing since day one and still haven’t gotten 5 spear billets but I have 13 bow -.- I know you can trade them in but the material need is obtain the same way and a really kick in the balls. It cost two of them when everything else is a one for one like the Ascension material.
Yeah I find the cost to convert them dumb too because there was no need to introduce new billet types at all (all it does is make the billet problem worse, and that was clearly on purpose). Two or more solvent to convert billets to a different type though? Then the billet issues largely go away
@@Solunerra it’s all by design to either make you run out of those rare drops that you get every once in a while, or to spend money on the game for marginal upgrades that no matter what you’re just gonna replace when the new unit comes out anyways

i do the boss runs every week bc i like to have every craftable r5 and i havent gotten a billet in like 6 months i dont have any of the fontaine craftables bc im still trying to finish the sumeru ones
I have a standard banner only account and the most enjoyment I've found is the fact that I get to hyper invest in characters that I either don't have or don't build properly on main. I recently grinded for primos to get Tighnari's weapon. It is the one and only thing I broke my rules for (basic rules: primos and masterless starglitter for acquaint fates only, intertwined fates can only be used on weapons banner with no epitomized path set, I can only use characters once they are obtained at least once on standard banner) aka I leave the account luck to pure RNG. I don't think I'll actually do the spiral abyss as end game. At this point I kind of just want to see where the account goes and play characters that I don't have.
TLDR I have a standard banner only account that is pure RNG, I don't plan to 36 star the abyss because I'm just having fun playing the characters with no time constraints.
Yeah, this is a big part of the fun of polearms only to me too. Investing a ton in a unit like Rosaria is interesting, and something Id never do on my main account. Weapons Only just removed the fun part of the game: the characters lol

I have ideas for challenge series that I may do in the future, but they are kinda different in concept in order to reduce the timesink of having an entire account to login to repeatedly.
I made a hybrid account where i just get specific characters and try to get weapons good for them like getting the uraku for kirara

Good thing that since I started playing genshin, I saw many content creators telling us that weapon banner is a scam.
This video proves that weapon banner is a scam because constellations, 4* weapons even 3* weapons (like HoD & Black tassel), and artifacts are sufficient enough to improve your acc. For me, it us actually more fun to have many 5* characters than 5* weapons. I enjoy farming for characters, and I only wish to characters I like rather than focusing to meta.

3 star weapons arent as functional on most characters but its still probably doable on a normal account at least lol
Definitely a lot of issues with the account. So many five star weapons are tailor-made for specific five star characters, who are of course not on the weapon banner. And these weapons are made not just to be good for those characters, but to also be bad for the others. There are few cases like Xinyan or Noelle with a Redhorn. And even then, you run into issues of having fewer characters to team with... no Albedo, Zhongli, or Chiori for Noelle, for example. And then you can't really control the constellations as much, so no C6 Noelle/Xinyan... It definitely compounds things. And, from a content perspective, rarely are characters truly transformed, especially when handicapped in terms of team construction.
But hey, now you can start a new account for the new type of banner ;) That'll be, basically, the least popular five stars and their weapons ;)

Therefore, Hu Tao is functionally nonexistent. IIRC when I was talking about SoSS I even specifically mentioned the 5 star characters were something I couldnt acquire

It just wasn't fun. And it was an F2P account so it felt really bad when i lost 5050 😂
Yeah I didnt mention it this video, but keeping the account F2P made it a lot harder to make content on the game. Just doing the BP wouldve allowed me to level up more characters/weapons and what not. Im glad I kept it F2P so I know how that feels now at least. It is very clear to me that the amount of wishes AND other resources for F2P players is balanced to make it feel like you never have enough resources

I definitely did it for the content, but tbh if I had still spent this much time and effort playing on the account as I did but without making content from it, I do think I would have done the same thing once I had the idea. Theres a weird sense of freedom from just nuking an account that I came to dislike after trying to do my utmost for a year for it lol. The finality of the act feels good

I never felt angry for one second when recording this. But I let my full apathy come through, because that is what the account made me feel over the last year.
You cant really have fun in the game when wishing on only the weapon banner because the fun of the game comes from the characters, but you cannot get the characters. Weapons are just for the characters. I tried to enjoy this account, I really did. The entire series was an exploration of different ideas to try different things to have fun on it, but basically nothing worked, because wishing only on weapon banner breaks the balance of how the game was designed to allow you to have fun. Game design isnt this weird thing where its entirely on the player to control if they have fun or not…

I feel like the luck was extremely bad during these series and that was the reason why so much frustration built up. We have different perception and I want to share mine in hopes you'd find things I find fun interesting as well.
I really feel like the most interesting weapons are 4* weapon-banner exclusive. Except for monstadt series others seem really fun and use interesting mechanics that'll make you feel like you're actually thinking while playing and using some strategy, not just pulling for the best stat stick.
But yes, no point if there are no characters. But it's it fun to figure out how to use the ones that you get? It's possible to beat the game being completely f2p and it kinda sound fun. Fun isn't limited with characters.
