  • I get a lot of questions like "Do I need to do X before fashion school?" "Do I need to study X in high school to be a fashion designer?" So I made a massive checklist of subjects in school to pay attention to, what classes to take if you don't have fashion classes at your school, and what other things you can do to prepare outside of school.

    "Patternmaking is basically geometry"
That def explains why geometry was my favroite class in hs.
Anyway I cannot agree more about needing math. It pisses me off when my classmates are sooooo annoyed they have to do math.

I always wanted to become a fashion designer but my family doesn't see this as a promising career back then so I became a laboratory scientist. Now at 29, I still hold this dream in me so I watched some FS related YT videos and came across your page. You have no idea how you helped me plucked-up some courage to apply to fashion colleges. I worked my ass off with the prerequisites and just last week I got my acceptance letters. I also got an internship as a Technical Designer which will start tomorrow. Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart

The answer is Beau Brummell! During the Regency period in England, Brummell was known as an exquisite dresser who often hung around the elite upper classes. But he would be very out of place because he was much more middle class and could not afford the luxurious decorative fabrics most people wore. So Instead, he focused on dressing with incredible precision. He is said to have spent 3 hours tying his cravat. Because of all this, he is the preeminent example of the “dandy”

    • @decepticonne
      @decepticonne 5 років тому +2

@@ZoraTheberge Beau Brummell was a symptom of a much bigger disease imho. you could argue that he is one of history's first male fashion influencers, and that's very historically significant for sure.
but just like "fashion influencers" don't revolutionize our wardrobes, one very stylish individual hasn't turned the tides of men's fashion all by himself.
a whole mythology has been spunned around him after his death (and up to this day, as your comment shows), but again that's only symptomatic of a deeper, wider and more durable social change wrt/ menswear.

I'm saying that whether or not i "succeed" in this industry, i won't regret that i once pursue my "passion". i actually forget where i'm going with this but i applied for art school without any knowledge and being at the bottom of the class because of it, be courageous and believe in yourself. "patterning is basically geometry" my hs have sewing classes & we sew clothing(we make things from scratch & clone current fitting clothes) I can basically eyeball measurements at this point but I hate math.. I despise anything with calculations but pattern making doesn't feel like I'm calculating maybe because I don't use any "formulas" I can eyeball darts & curves almost easily but solving problems in math class, I could never.
Man, doing something you love can make you "good" with things you hated..

It’s a huge relief to know that it’s normal for people to have a different path to fashion design school than starting directly after high school. My hope is to practice fashion drawing and sewing like crazy as I earn a degree in cybersecurity using tuition benefits while I’m currently working as a student finance counselor and then use that degree to secure a job that pays well enough for me to support myself while pursuing a fashion design program, or to land a job at a fashion design school w/tuition benefits

During my freshman year in my fashion major, I found a passion with textile design. It really helps to have a strong background of chemistry and/or bio engineering. Extra skills like these not only help with personal success, but also helping find solutions to common problems in the fashion industry.

Hey! I just turned 14 and recently have been thinking of having my career in the fashion industry. I'm from London and I'm in year 9, so here we can choose 3 additional subjects to do along with Maths, PE, English. One of the subjects I chose was Fashion Textiles. I've been considering studying at a college after finishing my final exams later on in year 11-12, and so far I've been having a tonne of questions haha. I hope you'll see this and help me if possible.
Is it too early for me to start building up my portfolio now?
Does going to an Art College differ from a Fashion Textiles College? If so, is there a better one?
Are the basics of a portfolio for college pretty much similar to/the same as the portfolio needed for university or fashion design school?
Thanks so much, I recently discovered your channel and love your videos! They have really helped.
    xx

Hey! I'm in the UK as well, I'm 15 and about to be in year 11 and I am trying to get into fashion as well! For now, it is too early to be building a portfolio. For university, you usually start building your porfolio in year 13, or the summer just before year 13 as you will also need to prepare your personal statement. In the UK, art school (so uni) usually have the major creative subjects such as fashion, art, performing arts, gaming and tech etc etc. For fashion, going to a specific uni dedicated to fashion is really good, some of the best are: Central Saint Martins(UAL), London College of Fashion (UAL) but other unis like London Met and Kingston University are not fashion dedicated universities but their fashion courses are known to be very good.
For college or sixth form, depending on if your doing a btec extended diploma or a levels, they will usually ask for fashion, art or textile work. I am making a portfolio for college right now and the tutor of the college I want to apply for said the portfolio should consist of at least 10 fashion illustrations and work. However, other schools may ask you to include textile or art work so make sure you check the requirements on the schools.
The portfolio to get into a fashion/art course at college or sixth form is COMPLETELY different to the one for university. Again, the unis always have portfolio advice on their websites on exactly what they want in their portfolio. Some universities ask for garments that students have sewn, fashion illustrations, photoshoots etc, depending on what course you are applying for. Usually unis can ask from anywhere from 15-30 pages of work. Research the universities requirements when it's time to start applying. Good luck!

OMG W H A T a TIMEING! I will be moveing to new city for my fashion school but first I have to save up for it! And I’m considering IT job coz it’s in my circle of intrests, I feel comfortable and it’s basicly creative problem solving or more so creative problem finding, 'coz I want to be a tester. But this made me think what can I do b4 I will have enough money to not „loose” that time. And here you are with perfect video ILY

I’m in my last year of medical school and I’m not even that into fashion (I’m thankful for scrubs and not having to decide what to wear 😂), so I’m not close to thinking about going to fashion school, but I just really enjoy your videos. They’re so interesting!

Hi Zoe! I absolutely love your channel, it has helped tons! I was actually curious to get your advice/opinion on what art schools are best for fashion design? I watched your last video on that; however, I am conflicted as I am transferring into a school. I am looking into attending SAIC in chicago, but I'm nervous that I won't get the same experience as I would if I went somewhere in New York? I just see lots of great designers come out of there, such as Parsons, and it makes me nervous! Any advice?

I already speak a language, I am already Bi lingual. I was born in Warsaw, Poland, then my family and I moved to NYC, when I was just 2 years of age, my family and I lived in NYC, in 1969, we then moved to Phoenix, Az. So, I speak Polish Fluently, and English Fluently. I know, adobe. I received a B. I also, took a multitude of other creative courses. I love history of any kind, I actually already have a Bachelor Of Fine Arts, major: Photography, Associate in Arts, Arcadia High School, and the old elementary school. I would love to take, more sculpting, though. I only took one course of that,..! What I want to complete now is: 2 levels of costume design and production, and add this to my Associate in arts. I need to do an extension of my portfolio.

School in Australia is so different to America and there's no virtually no fashion industry. No hope of working at an alterations shop without experience or anything else. There's no colleges offering courses. There's tafe that has a couple workshops that run for just two Sunday afternoons long and cost $500-$1.500

I have to ask- do i have to sew/make clothing to be a fashion deaigner? My ideal job would be to draw out and design a sketch for the outfit, studying whats new and whats in rn, then I would send the sketch over to someone and they will turn it into a real outfit.

After watching your video, i just figured out i wont be able to study fashion. I know nothing about geometry, have zero knowledge of using colours and i dont know how to draw. I almost can't do anything you have mentioned.im only good at sewing or atleast i try... I cant attend a college cause im an international student and I'm likely not going to get a visa to study in a college and i cant afford the cost. I was hoping to apply for scholarship but that wont cover all the cost. Thank you for this video.

I'm an Artist But I've always Wanted to develops More Interesting clothing for My characters and draw it better, Not Only that, But I want to go into graphic design and Advertisement, And what Better Industry to Use Graphic Design in Than FASHION design? I'm going into Freshman Year and Preumptively Going to Be "pre-studying" as in, Essentially watching Videos that Aline with my schedule and the subjects I can Research. Hello Zoe, I'm 21, and currently in the process for finishing my bachelor degree in engineering. At first, I was very anxious that many fashion schools won't accept undergraduate applicants who have already earned a bachelor degree in different major. So, it's allowed, right?

I was thinking of studying fashion and I am overwhelmed just by thinking about it cause what I only know is drawing clothes with my own ideas, knowing my style in clothing, what looks good in the eyes, without sewing backgrounds....Do you think I have a chance in becoming a good designer??? I would really appreciate ur response.. and I love ur vids❤️

I’m in High school in Norway. I love designing clothes and everything. I’ve looked at different fashion schools around the world and I really wanna go to FIT. The thing is my mental health has been very bad lately and fashion is the only thing that makes me happy and motivates me, so my grades are pretty bad. I’m not sure how to get further at this moment or if anything would help...

The only other class is art, I am not every good at drawing things...not in general (I can draw my models and designs) but I cant draw for example....shaded apples, or portraits...would I have to be good at that stuff to pass/take the classes?
