    Jeff👋🏻 it’s doc from Dallas. Great interview with Greg Koch. The Blues - it’s like the Earth. We are made of Earth. It’s our connective tissue. It’s our essence. That low down & dirty filthy emotion. With the Spark of life , we rise up from the roots & wail through the mist. We cry out , I’m here , I feel , it hurts …
    so good. ❤

    thnx jeff! great interview. if someone who doesn’t know much about playing guitar, asked me why I love guitar so much, I would just link them to a greg koch video. nobody makes guitar seem so f$&@ing fun like drade.

    Thanks Jeff! Excellent interview with Greg - a fascinating fellow and an awesome guitar player. I saw Greg and his trio play at The Brook in Southampton a couple of months ago and they were ace! Would be great to see/hear a collaboration between you and Greg. Maybe you could perform together in Inverness and Greg could bring his Koch Ness Monster while Nessie cavorts in the loch in the background...

      @ Was able to see Greg live last year in Seattle. Great show with infectious energy. His personality really comes through his playing. Which is true of all of you who are guitar players and not just guitar owners, like many of the rest of us. Still working on it.

    I can remember going into a bar in downtown Racine in the late 60’s when I was 18. The White Trash Blues Band was playing and they just started to play Purple Haze. Wow, hearing that song for the first time was one of those moments that you never forget.

    Awesome interview! I like your style of interviewing and what's not to like of the great Greg Koch! Both you and Greg were so profound in this topic! You have a down to Earth approach man and should do more interviews! I am learning mostly jazz but all stemmed from the blues! You have a new subscriber!

    Man I usually don't dig this sort of podcast, but I loved this one.
    As a former pro audio contractor/engineer and pro musician I can attest to the power of live music.
    I was blessed to work as a sound contactor with some of the greats in all genres, three shows I was not working really stood out. Blind Boys of Alabama, who I later worked with, a Seattle local Duffy Bishop and the Rhythm Dogs..lord god Almighty when she sang fire and brimstone you damn well smelled the brimstone, and some local piano player in key West who played nonstop for three hours sweating buckets mostly blues, until the bartender made him take a break. Also heard Dave Mason in the ninties in a local Seattle bar, blisteringly loud, but righteous, and of course My man Mojo Nixon, who always rocked it with just a guitar and Skid Roper on washboard. With Mojo his lyrics were so outrageously funny I alternated between laughing and screaming F... yeah! Man there is power in live music.

    The reason I think many people like me do not subscribe is that in the early days we all subscribed to too many channels... it gets out of hand. So, it's rare these days to bother. My list is too long these days! But I do like Greg and this interview was (as always with Greg) entertaining and engaging. More stuff like this and maybe I could be persuaded to subscribe.

    • @JeffMcErlain
      @JeffMcErlain  Місяць тому

      Easy answer to this. Delete the other channels in your subscription then add mine and I may be persuaded to do more interviews like this. Now that’s a plan.

    This is the same thing that happened with Bonamassa. He was doing killer Blues-Rock-Fusion stuff that I absolutely loved but there wasn't enough of an audience for it, he was playing clubs. Once he went straight ahead muddy Waters blues he took off into the millionaire stratosphere and never looked back.

    Speaking of Hendrix. There’s a section on the BOG Machine Gun Solo that, to we, might be the peak of electric guitar playing. I was shocked when I saw him play it, he’s basically doing it all off a blues box at the 12h fret. The part of my brain that tells me I need to be playing in different modes and positions to be valid was completely shut down

    How are you liking the JEL? I just got the JEL20 for dragging around town, seems like a great “do anything” amp, love the master on the clean side for dirtier cleans

    • @JeffMcErlain
      @JeffMcErlain  Місяць тому

      I really like it. It does exactly what I wanted it to do! Very versatile for sure. I was looking at the 20 but then they announced the 50.

    • @chrisquinn9104
      @chrisquinn9104 Місяць тому

      It’s always tempting to go bigger for me, but I have a bunch of bigger heavier amps, so this an exercise in restraint. It’s hard not to tell myself the bigger one is the “real one,” next thing you know your hauling a Fryette D120 to a gig

    • @JeffMcErlain
      @JeffMcErlain  Місяць тому

      Ha! Yup. I’m always worried about headroom with a 20 watt amp. The 100 looked cool but too big , loud, heavy and expensive. You can’t beat the 20 watt size. Maybe I need that too…

    • @chrisquinn9104
      @chrisquinn9104 Місяць тому

      @ Head room seems good and my band is pretty loud. 26” Vistalight bass drum loud. Lift a 20 sometime and imagine carrying the t to a gig

    The comment about live music being so much more remembered and powerful than what you watch on UA-cam or has been recorded. I had never thought of it that way but rings true for me. I can remember concerts that I went to over 40 years ago but remembering a concert or a guitar player that I watched on UA-cam is not the same, not even close. Good show. Thanks

    There's too much music available now! So much to choose from. It's overwhelming. It's amazing that anybody actually follows anybody at all LOL. It's amazing that people actually turn out to shows when there are thousands of artists to choose from and they are all touring and vying for your attention.

  • @57stratkat
    @57stratkat Місяць тому

    yep, I agree about the virtues of loud, live music. But now, I'm 67 and have tinnitus in both ears and hearing a high frequency 24 hours a day, having to use white noise to not go crazy trying to go to sleep, etc... is NO FUN and it's permanent. I wish I had always worn earplugs. Shoulda, coulda, woulda....
