Why Yogis Don’t Actually Have Supernatural Powers

  • Many yoga people believe in yogis who have supernatural abilities such as levitating or ability to survive buried underground for weeks without air. Unfortunately when taking a closer look at the history of live burials and the science behind it, it becomes soon evident that it is probably more wishful thinking than reality.

Yogic powers are also known as siddhis. Unfortunately there is no historical scientific evidence that they exist. Some people could claim that the yogis who do have superpowers are living deep in the jungle or a cave and they don't show off their powers, but what's probably closer to the truth is the saying by Christopher Hitchens also known as the Hitchens Razor: "“What can be asserted without evidence, can also be dismissed without evidence.”
For years I used to have a lack of critical thinking myself. I used to believe many things which had little evidence or truth behind them. These beliefs led me to decisions which did not turn out to my favor. Eventually I discovered critical thinking and changed my life for the better. Now I choose what I believe in with much more care. Make better, more informed decisions and enjoy the results. Yet it doesn’t take much time to see that many people still fail to separate true information from false. That’s why I created the Practical Critical Thinkers channel.
If you are looking for a critical thinking channel - look no more and let's create a culture of practical thinking together!
In this channel you will learn what is critical thinking, various critical thinking skills, find critical thinking exercises, learn how to use critical thinking in a debate, learn about the best critical thinking books out there, find critical thinking tutorials what results a lack of critical thinking has and much more.

    Dude,
You are just promoting pure dumbness in the name of critical thinking.
I mean sure, there are people who just perform some deceptive magic tricks and vall themselves yogis
    There are real yogis too.
As you said in your video, only 6 percent of the questioned so called yogis said that they were performing magic, there are 94 more who didn't claim such. And you are concluding and making generalisations based on confessions of only 6 people.
And you think you are a critical thinker.
Secondly, you only portrayed how yogis' power of Underground burial is a hoax. That too only few so called yogis participated in it.
    What about other feats
Such as roaming naked in -20 degrees (there is a video, if you want proof of it).
What about yogis who have sustained in fire(again there is the video, i can even send the link)
What about burrying oneself in the ground till the neck, for days-without food and water.
Each and every thing has a video
It just looks like you dont want to believe it, no matter what.
I guess even if a yogi performs these feats in front of you, you would not believe it.
    You are a pure rascal
    I mean srsly

Or maybe his expectations of receiving "superpowers" like american superhero's are misplaced. He has basically tried to trash a tried & tested practice which benefits millions of people on a physical, mental & spiritual level.

I liked the video, there were some cool experiments and places I have not heard about yet. However, I do not think you really addressed *why* yoga is not giving the powers that many of the gurus claim, just made a case for the yoga power claims not holding up under scrutiny. This reminds of a video by Thunderf00t, a scientist who does viral video/popular trend debunking videos among other things. Thunderf00t made a video on the breatharians (people who claim they just live off just lemon water with no food.). He did a similar strategy- he showed labs who scientifically quarantined breatharians with their lemon water and monitored their weight (spoilers, they lost weight!). Now he took this a step further and showed that every-time you breathe out you excrete carbon (through carbon dioxide). If you are not taking in enough carbon to replenish it, you will lose weight. There was not enough carbon in lemons added to the water to replenish their bodies needs, and the breatharian system does not add new sources of carbon in your body therefore it will not work as claimed. Like you he showed evidence that *what* is claimed is not likely true, but then went on a step further to show *why* it can not work the way they claim.

@@Rokasleo Yes, the camera work is much better than before and the clips were integrated well also. How did you fix focus hunting? New camera or one of my suggestions? A few nitpickings - the mic appears too big in scale proportionally to your face, which makes it a distraction. It also wiggles a lot, also a distraction. Think how you can make the mic look less dominant, maybe lower it a little bit, or try different angles. Or simply zoom out a little bit and get more of your body into frame, which will make the mic look smaller. Also think how to make your background more studio-like, especially since you are using studio microphone. Place something relevant to critical thinking, like a poster with Universe, or mind, etc, and remove random household items. As for the subject, i think what would be interesting is not just to say that magic doesn’t exit and stop, but to explore why people are so susceptible to believing in magic. It has been proven that people are prone to believe in anything religious and mystical without much evidence. But what if this “flaw” in our thinking is given us by nature for a reason? What if without it life would appear pointless and dull to most people, leading to depression, indifference, loss of interest in life in general? So maybe “debunking” our dreams is not as harmless as it seems?

But how do you know that there aren't some that have such powers. I mean, if you had powers from your spiritual practice, would you make a public show about those here in the west? Your life as a spiritual practitioner would be over. I mean, there is a reason that so many superheroes in comics and movies have a secret second identity for their superheroing. I do not have proof for that and also - there are some people who can do some incredible things. But I am curious to ask this: do you think that there are yogis with super powers who are in hiding, or are you just saying that's it's possible that there may be?

    • @petrairene
      @petrairene 3 роки тому +2

@@Rokasleo I have very good reason to believe that there are yogis that have superpowers. And that they are not making a public show of it. Though if you are at the right place at the right time, you may get a demonstration. Though the witnesses are not exactly telling it to everyone either. Okay, here it goes. Nyoshul Khenpo, who is now dead for about 20 years had telepathic abilities. I had an experience of that kind (will not specify what exactly) and when I mentioned it to an old student (westerner) he told me, "yeah, that's pretty much standard around him, everyone knows". I believe he used it more extensively because towards the end of his life he was quite sick and it and he had problems communicating otherwise. And he was quite gone beyond anyway, so he didn't care much to hide it. There are others where I know it, I will not mention names of living ones.
Actually, vajrayana buddhism, what is also called Tibetan buddhism can only be transmitted by "supernatural" means. The whole tradition is built around it and applying the meditation techniques in an advanced stage will definitely result in so called supernatural abilities. It's not even possible to avoid it. For everyone who really takes a plunge into that tradtion it becomes quite commonplace and no biggie that teachers of that tradtion to a more or less degree eventually display something of that kind. Though, no, it's not advertised, and they will likely never do a demonstration in a science lab to give "proof" to the world.

@@Rokasleo Nah, if you have a conversation with someone in your head just like you would have one with a physically present person that is not a trick, I can assure you. And the fact that that old student has agreed that I am not the only person who has this experience with him makes it more than an oddity that may be purely the product of my personal fantasy.
He expressed a profound sadness about the fact that with his failing body he could no longer interact with people properly. Hehad been having severe health problems for a long time, but I think at that point he no longer saw much use to hang on. A month or so later my mind was suddenly experiencing an eerie state of an otherworldly peace and I thought, what the hell has happened now. A few hours later I heard that he had died that day and then I knew why. That's a typical experience if a realised teacher you have a connection with goes.
      So, there is the story.
By the way, people knowing when someone close to them far away has died is not that uncommon, even among totally unspiritual people. How would they know if there wasn't a subconscious level telepathic connection.
I had a conversation with the spirit of my grandmother at her funeral. I could because I knew that there was a possiblity that she was there and quite confused. She had died after she had been in a coma for a year, after a severe stroke. She was quite glad that there was someone there who would talk to her and tell her what was going on. I told her that she is now free of her horribly damaged body and she can move on now and suggested she seek out a pure land. And then it was over. Can I do that generally with dead people? Nope. But my grandmother has always really liked me and I had liked her. There was already a connection. So it's not at all a yogi thing to talk to minds.
By the way, I think we have to rework our funeral service habits. It's confusing as hell for a deceased who happens to have not yet moved on. If you ever encounter death in your family, don't expect a result, but open yourself up to the possiblity. If you are living under the assumption that this is not possible, that concept will prevent it from being possible.

How likely it is do you think that he never found a person who is actually capable of it?
After answering these two questions there is one more thing I am curious to ask your opinion about. So even let's say your story is true and you are right, would you suggest to me to become a believer in telepathy and that it's enough just because you've told me this story?

One thing that puzzles me is that even in the modern era when they are performed in the west by a western man, we all know that this is a trick even though it's well done and still impressing and astonishing and entertaining. When the same performance is done by people from the east we give supernatural powers to the performers while the methods and effects are similar.
Another is that a revelation of these as tricks as any other has been done by the French magician Robert Houdin in his book for teaching magic to beginners.

Such a great insight Nazim! It's definitely interesting how Westerners tend to mystify everything that's from East and give more esoteric credit to it. I wonder if it's because of decades of previous impressions which used to mystify the East, including various pop culture products such as movies about the "supernatural" of the East.

Don't misunderstand... Guru is very high level of state....
People who just do few years of tapasya just to get a simple power which already can be done using tools are not gurus they are just some show off tapaswi....
Guru is someone who examines a soul and then accepts it and not leaves it untill the soul attains moksha....
No relation in the world is as real as the relation of a guru and shishya....
"Yah tan vish ki belari guru amrit ki khan..
Shish diyo jo guru mile toh bhi sasta Jaan"
It means that our body is full of poison (thoughts and desires) but guru is a waterfall of amrit(amrit literally means something you consume to be immortal... But here amrit refers to knowledge wisdom and mercy)
Next line means if you need to chop of your head to get a guru then it's very cheap price....
Point to be noted I am telling (sant param sant etc guru)
      Not materialistic guru

Man, at last some one is doing a honest video on Yoga.
I'm Indian and has practiced yoga and kalari. It's just pseudo science and wishful thinking.
Even the roots of yoga, if you dig deep, is nothing than modern western exercises! And this is coming from someone who has read intensively on the original scriptures.
Around here whenever I say this people get mad, because yoga is tied to their national/relegious identity🙏😂😂
