it's actually faster to stand in lane and top hat allies or other lanes... but this does require you to not look away from the mini map and know exactly when an enemy hero is missing or you just gonna die. I normally do this with the mine build because it usually makes people not want to hunt you down or they just blow tf up lol

So i'd say abby has a more difficult time bodysoaking since the changes but soaking with the hat has become much easier. The xp globes, since they linger a little bit on the ground before disappearing, give abby time to double soak two (uncontested) lanes at a time. Though bodysoaking has become a lot riskier since you're probably revealing yourself on the map to get in range of the exp. One more thing, picking up the exp globes your teammates leave on the ground is just so satisfying! Don't worry if you're not top xp on tomb it's kinda difficult on such a small map
At 6 minutes (Pally corrected himself), the change to shield timing and healing came during the big rework so that you wouldn't be incentivised to randomly dehat just for healing

Your level and XP, cooldowns, respawn timers, and a minimap for quick overview where you can see at a glance which lanes are pushed, which camps are up and where heroes are. Most players new to the game are overburdened trying to even micro their hero. So many things to do that they forget to read the display. The map is a powerful tool. Enemies can see where you are and plan their moves. Since many players do not use it (because they haven't learned to cross-check and are overloaded), this brought rise to the joke that they don't have a mini-map because you have to pay premium to unlock it. So if someone gets killed alone in lane and it was obvious that would happen by looking at the map and seeing 5 red heroes collapse on their position, you'd assume he doesn't have the mini-map DLC, or else he would have seen it coming.

Correction: the cooldown of hat is no longer shorter than the cooldown of shield. If you stay on target and press E when it's available, you can have 100% uptime on that shield. That said, the option of hatting, shielding, leaving to do something else and coming back when the hat cooldown comes around is still there.
Pally, as someone who is interested in Dota as well, I would LOOOVE to watch you play some, even if you are just a beginner. It's not just about watching you to learn things, it's just enjoyable to see you play. I'm curious about your reactions to the game overall. Hope you considering releasing some vids :)
The spike (w) talent at level 1 is my favorite on that tier, especially if you're going to take the heal on 13. If your tank is good at peeling, you can put hat on them, and they just don't die. Level 4, I like the extra mines, the amount of attack speed you get doesn't help most characters, and extra mines will help you soak (they can last hit minions) or scout. Those two talents helps early game, you hop on a minion, do a few spikes and you clear out the front line. Drop a few mines on the archers, and then switch to another lane, or a teammate. Your hat picks up globes, so you can go to another lane and get the xp even if the minions are already dead. You should be able to get ahead on xp. Then at 20, the two hat talent gives you two people getting healed by your w, and your e, and two people doing damage....which I think gets more value than the once a combat shield to one person.
Dude check that clutch save on Lunara at 10:07. Go through by frames and watch hanzo's auto attack arrow getting closer and closer each frame until the top hat shield saved her at literally the last moment :O
Since the changes to Abby, the top hat shield has the same cd as his the hat cd itself. So top hat, shield, drop hat method is no longer the way to go unless u wanna switch targets.

I play a lot of abathur games and honestly, he feels best with teams that have a lot of disengages to escape fights they don't want to have so you can focus on soaking. Then once they have the level advantage they use all their disengage as hard engage to force the enemy team to fight them. I've had games where my team would get 4 level advantages and death ball one lane while I soaked the other two.
XP globes strongly encourage Prolific Dispersal and dropping mines on the archers even outside of mine builds. You can get by without it but it's a huge boon to soaking safely. Been a while since I played Abathur but I think the number to drop a wave outright was 4.

Since then it's been one of my favorite games of all time, same with Dark Souls, Divinity, and now you've introduced me to Hades which I can't stop playing. Secondly, I digress, I'm leaving this comment to give you a couple Abathur tips. Just like you, I only play Quick Match. Through my 500-ish games of Abathur I did a ton of talent testing. As of right now, at level 4, I believe that Needlespine is the most powerful pick possible. Why? Adrenal Overload is inconsistent in it's ability to simply deal any damage. Relying on your Lunara to auto-attack sounds like a safe bet, right? Unfortunately it isn't, and even then Needlespine works while hatting everything else, including hatting tanks or mages, or pushing waves with Symbiote. Needlespine also has massive DPS in combination with Spatial Efficiency at 13, the damage is out of this world. It is, 9 times out of 10, the better option, even when it seems like Adrenal overload is a no-brainer. I know how weird that sounds, especially to an OG Abathur player, but I encourage you to pick Needlespine more often than not. Second tip, the upgrades to Ultimate Evolution at 16 and 2o, have recieved 3 buffs EACH in recent memory, and now push the clone in the final stages of a game to be a force no team can ignore. With massive duration, healing/damage aura, and an impenetrable shield for the Host target, the ability is a monster. While the movement speed at 16 has massive potential for rotation and escape, I find I see my teammates mounting most of the time instead of realizing of the presence of a speed buff that is higher than mount speed upon them. And while Hivemind at 20 has massive damage potential, Evolution Complete provides and on-demand shield that saves caught-out teammates in the late game. All of these truths apply even if you play with viewers, I would know since I play so much of HotS with my older brother and some of our friends that some talents are inconsistent. I encourage you to try the two talents at 16 and 20 as well. But try everything! Evolution is never complete! Once again, thank you Pally for your great content. I wish you minimal frustration in your attempt to relearn Abathur. That little slug is one of my favorite characters :) I would totally hug him. P.S. you played great, awesome map-awareness(DotA payed off, huh?), great clutch heals and shields, Proud of you! Cheers.
I suggest that if you have a butcher or illidan and you're playing Aba then you go full hat build. Usually go hat E talent at lvl one if against strong mages or melee/ranged assassins. You only want to really go minion/locust heroic at lvl 10 if you're on a giant map like Warhead Juntion or Raven map. If you go mine build then you need to make sure that you're placing them very carefully and usually grouped up in bushes or just right before objs come up
Hey pally, well played my dude! i play a lot of abathur and this map is pretty hard to get lots of xp as abby.. i do like the mine build on this map especially with squishies like tracer Bwing and hanzo. You can predict were they will go really well and just place a bomb of mines.. so satisfying to see a tracer blow up like that
If you want to soak alot of xp Abby you need to hat your friendly minions and kill the enemies. If you have the mass shield you should shield every single minion in every lane so they push longer and survive more. If you are going to mine a minion wave you have to make sure you have enough mines to nuke down a wave at once if you are not going to hat the friendly wave after you place the mines. Mines only count towards your kill if the minion has died to the mine. It doesn't count if the minion survives your mine then dies a second later. So be sure to place mines then hat the minion to soak the xp. Always look on the map and shield your friendly minions and push back a minion wave. Doing that throughout the game will have you carry the xp gain for you team. With your minions living longer and able to soak more the enemy will have to go and defend which will let your team easily kill the other players. And if they don't defend then they just lose the entire lane/lanes if you just hard push 1 or 2. Don't worry if you can't push back all the lanes. If you can push back atleast one lane and make the enemy defend then you are doing perfectly. But don't neglect your team. Saving and helping your team is more important than lane soaks. Only body soak lanes if you know it's safe. To be honest it's not worth body soaking unless you just dig to a lane and place down the talent which makes you spawn 5 adds. Your hat is the only thing you need, no body soaks needed. Just stay safe.
You should try locust abathur. burrow (dive?) to their keeps (with The help of your mines for vision) and release all The locusts from talents in lvl 16 and 20. Such a fun build, so annoying to play against. Would love to see you try ut out!
That was such a poor design imo. I abused the hell out of that with Murky by taking hits and pufferfish until I freely pushed. It was amazing for pushers.
My main is abathur lvl168, unless i had an Illidan, Butcher, or artanis for that map i would have went seige with bugs or mine build. lvl10 talent would be monster and lvl20 i always take double hats. As everyone has said hat a minion for xp no need for killing blow. Hat a minion collect xp then hat another lane rinse and repeat. Bubble build with a well fed monster is hard to stop in lane. The monster can also tunnel just like Abathur now. I hope to see more Abby videos soon. glhf

@brakjart Or it can be OP. It all depends what kind of line up the enemy heroes have if for some miracle all the stars align and u are Vs 5 melees that do sustain instead of burst, oh boy do you get value out of his trait. That said it is so situational that u may never be in such a situation.
Yeah. Arthas is slightly underperforming, I'd say, and the Frostmourne build, while big fun for slaying bots by the pound, is weak in PvP. Effectively, you are not a tank, even though Arthas is classified as one. Think of yourself as a squishy bruiser. You need strong heals / protection to be able to walk it in. You should at least have one actual tank in your team and hope your opponents can't peel. You lose against Lucio, Raynor, ETC, anybody who can create a gap. You can't chase. You have little sustain outside of your heroic even with rune tap and you can be focused down fast. If you happen upon a melee heavy enemy team without proper peels and you have a healer and tank worth their salt, you can dominate with crazy spell damage and just walk it down. But it's rare and you generally get poked down and killed trying to even get close. Team up with friends who enable you.
I think a lot of people see the monstrosity as only a split pusher but if you get it stacked (especially with the talent at level 20) you chunk enemies with each auto so you burrow it into a fight and they either waste their time on it instead of ur team or u destroy their back line while shielding your whole team as well, I pick it every time over the evolution which barely lasts 5 seconds and u cant even ult anymore which is lame.
Abathur is my favorite hero and i play him almost exclusively. I've honesty been hoping to see you play him again for so long because i respect your input and experience on this game. I;ve learned to play many heroes from watching your A to Z in the past. I can definitely understand your level of rust considering how long its been but i would still love to see you play him more and see how you do on more favorable maps. if i could offer a couple tips though, from someone who is a level 80 Abathur and working to 100. First unlock your camera, it helps a lot. Secondly, build wise, for a hat build i would recommend not taking the shield talent at level one, mathematically speaking when paired with healing spines the increased range is simple better in both healing and damage output and makes lane pushing all around easier. if you're not focusing locust its really the only good pick at level one. Don't feel bad about not taking mule, while i love the talent it is, again, mathematically worse than carapace network. it honestly only makes you loose slower, if you're team is winning it gets no real value where the network aids in preventing their siege damage while in lane and increases your own healing output. when paired with the extra hat talent at 20 its very easy to shield your whole team every cast. lastly your lv 20 pick, i would recommend double hats. again because it increases your shield coverage and you gain consistent value from it opposed to the short lived boost to your clone. i personally take the monstrosity more often. set it and forget it and focus on supporting my team. you can also burrow with your monster now, so keeping an eye on it and burrowing it back to the nexus to heal when low is easy and prolongs its value. also people often ignore it and don't appreciate how dangerous a lane push it is. Aside from that you pick all the talents i would have. Anyway. i really hope you play Abby more, i would love you see you're own perspective on him and his abilities after a bit more practice.
@@onkelpappkov2666 the buffed shield adds 40% more, or 60 points before scaling. the spike burst healing is 64 healing before scaling, per hero hit. hitting even one extra enemy has already out healed the buffed shield and provided extra damage on top of that. not to mention the additional wave clearing power it provides.

Also advice: If you hat something and then shield it then un-hat then shield technically only has a 4 second cooldown because you can just hat every 4 seconds and shield
KEEP THE HAT ON ONE PERSON. The whole point of playing aba is to amplify the power of one hero on your team. Keep it on Sam (preferably) or Joh or Lucio or whoever. That "add hat, instantly remove hat" doesn't do anything.

Im new to playing but ive been watching since alpha, abby is in a weird limbo right now. He's either godlike or just a slug. For quick match it's truly a coin flip
Same. Ive seen god tier abbys but usually it feels like a true handicap. Either they lack to exp contribution to make up for the lack of obj presence or they dont dish out heals/damage. I know abby is incredibly strong at the higher ends but diamond and lower he feels awful to have
Tbh no matter the enemy comp if i'm on illidan i just ask for a pocket slug with an atk spd boost and i just win, no matter if he doesn't have any xp contribution
imo the biggest mistake most abathurs make is not seeing when a person needs hat immediately, they just keep doing things on their own little world and when they change is too little too late. The other mistake is not constant pushing lanes. aba requires a lot of map awareness and focus. when you play aba you already know you are going to be on focus mode and have a higher awareness then your typical hero game.
The way I see it, there really is no reason to actually be in lane as Abathur, since the EXP-Changes. Sure, if you're actively collecting EXP-Globes it makes sense, but most of the time it's too dangerous, since you can't just soak from a bush anymore. I just sit in the midlane, so I can cover a decent portion of the map with mines.
You can, but then you can't "body soak", and your minions are entirely useless. They won't survive long enough to get to the frontlines. Having him and his minions getting xp in one lane, his monstrosity in another, and top-hatting minions in the the next almost entirely allows your allies to ignore soak and go for ganks/team fights/objective.
Such an annoying team to try to fight against, the damage are all champs that have very potent escape moves. Jumping over impassable terrain, rewind/blinks, and then another jump with the swap thingy Maive has. Add the CC wall that is Diablo and the polymorph Brightwing and it just...ugh feels bad man. The low number of kills your team got just reflex how damn hard it is to finish off any of the enemy team members when they death ball.
Usually love your content. But would it have really hurt you to maybe watch a five-minute video about the "new" Abba instead of not soaking at all and beeing the reason for a solid loss by a huge portion? Dont know.
You can top-hat a minion in lane and get all the xp on the ground :)

Seconded. Mines against squishers is pure sunshine. Without the slow at 7, so they have less time to react when they run through a patch.

That was such a poor design imo. I abused the hell out of that with Murky by taking hits and pufferfish until I freely pushed. It was amazing for pushers.

My main is abathur lvl168, unless i had an Illidan, Butcher, or artanis for that map i would have went seige with bugs or mine build. lvl10 talent would be monster and lvl20 i always take double hats. As everyone has said hat a minion for xp no need for killing blow. Hat a minion collect xp then hat another lane rinse and repeat. Bubble build with a well fed monster is hard to stop in lane. The monster can also tunnel just like Abathur now. I hope to see more Abby videos soon. glhf

@brakjart Or it can be OP. It all depends what kind of line up the enemy heroes have if for some miracle all the stars align and u are Vs 5 melees that do sustain instead of burst, oh boy do you get value out of his trait. That said it is so situational that u may never be in such a situation.
Yeah. Arthas is slightly underperforming, I'd say, and the Frostmourne build, while big fun for slaying bots by the pound, is weak in PvP.
Effectively, you are not a tank, even though Arthas is classified as one. Think of yourself as a squishy bruiser. You need strong heals / protection to be able to walk it in. You should at least have one actual tank in your team and hope your opponents can't peel. You lose against Lucio, Raynor, ETC, anybody who can create a gap. You can't chase. You have little sustain outside of your heroic even with rune tap and you can be focused down fast.
If you happen upon a melee heavy enemy team without proper peels and you have a healer and tank worth their salt, you can dominate with crazy spell damage and just walk it down. But it's rare and you generally get poked down and killed trying to even get close. Team up with friends who enable you.
I think a lot of people see the monstrosity as only a split pusher but if you get it stacked (especially with the talent at level 20) you chunk enemies with each auto so you burrow it into a fight and they either waste their time on it instead of ur team or u destroy their back line while shielding your whole team as well, I pick it every time over the evolution which barely lasts 5 seconds and u cant even ult anymore which is lame.

Abathur is my favorite hero and i play him almost exclusively. I've honesty been hoping to see you play him again for so long because i respect your input and experience on this game. I;ve learned to play many heroes from watching your A to Z in the past. I can definitely understand your level of rust considering how long its been but i would still love to see you play him more and see how you do on more favorable maps. if i could offer a couple tips though, from someone who is a level 80 Abathur and working to 100. First unlock your camera, it helps a lot. Secondly, build wise, for a hat build i would recommend not taking the shield talent at level one, mathematically speaking when paired with healing spines the increased range is simple better in both healing and damage output and makes lane pushing all around easier. if you're not focusing locust its really the only good pick at level one. Don't feel bad about not taking mule, while i love the talent it is, again, mathematically worse than carapace network. it honestly only makes you loose slower, if you're team is winning it gets no real value where the network aids in preventing their siege damage while in lane and increases your own healing output. when paired with the extra hat talent at 20 its very easy to shield your whole team every cast. lastly your lv 20 pick, i would recommend double hats. again because it increases your shield coverage and you gain consistent value from it opposed to the short lived boost to your clone. i personally take the monstrosity more often. set it and forget it and focus on supporting my team. you can also burrow with your monster now, so keeping an eye on it and burrowing it back to the nexus to heal when low is easy and prolongs its value. also people often ignore it and don't appreciate how dangerous a lane push it is. Aside from that you pick all the talents i would have. Anyway. i really hope you play Abby more, i would love you see you're own perspective on him and his abilities after a bit more practice.

@@onkelpappkov2666 the buffed shield adds 40% more, or 60 points before scaling. the spike burst healing is 64 healing before scaling, per hero hit. hitting even one extra enemy has already out healed the buffed shield and provided extra damage on top of that. not to mention the additional wave clearing power it provides.
Uhhh... So after not playing the game for 3 years. Returned to try it out again(got a bit sick of league) and what do you know, I only remember how to play Abathur xD

Also advice: If you hat something and then shield it then un-hat then shield technically only has a 4 second cooldown because you can just hat every 4 seconds and shield

KEEP THE HAT ON ONE PERSON. The whole point of playing aba is to amplify the power of one hero on your team. Keep it on Sam (preferably) or Joh or Lucio or whoever. That "add hat, instantly remove hat" doesn't do anything.

Every time I see an Abby on my team...not gonna lie. I deflate and just wanna give up lol rarely do I meet a good abby player.

Same. Ive seen god tier abbys but usually it feels like a true handicap. Either they lack to exp contribution to make up for the lack of obj presence or they dont dish out heals/damage. I know abby is incredibly strong at the higher ends but diamond and lower he feels awful to have
Tbh no matter the enemy comp if i'm on illidan i just ask for a pocket slug with an atk spd boost and i just win, no matter if he doesn't have any xp contribution
imo the biggest mistake most abathurs make is not seeing when a person needs hat immediately, they just keep doing things on their own little world and when they change is too little too late. The other mistake is not constant pushing lanes. aba requires a lot of map awareness and focus. when you play aba you already know you are going to be on focus mode and have a higher awareness then your typical hero game.

The way I see it, there really is no reason to actually be in lane as Abathur, since the EXP-Changes. Sure, if you're actively collecting EXP-Globes it makes sense, but most of the time it's too dangerous, since you can't just soak from a bush anymore. I just sit in the midlane, so I can cover a decent portion of the map with mines.
Locusts push your body's lane, so being as far ahead near the structures you want to siege is beneficial. Risky but you get trait value.

If you press “L” and unlock the camera it’s way easier to play Abathur.

I've never understood the point of moving abathur into the field, cant you just stay in spawn or something? :P
You can, but then you can't "body soak", and your minions are entirely useless. They won't survive long enough to get to the frontlines. Having him and his minions getting xp in one lane, his monstrosity in another, and top-hatting minions in the the next almost entirely allows your allies to ignore soak and go for ganks/team fights/objective.

Such an annoying team to try to fight against, the damage are all champs that have very potent escape moves. Jumping over impassable terrain, rewind/blinks, and then another jump with the swap thingy Maive has. Add the CC wall that is Diablo and the polymorph Brightwing and it just...ugh feels bad man.
The low number of kills your team got just reflex how damn hard it is to finish off any of the enemy team members when they death ball.
