The reason for Riddler's denial can be found in the side content of the previous games. If you explore his hideout in Origins we see that he'd been trying to identify the Batman and narrowed it down to Bruce Wayne or Harvey Dent, and we can assume that at some point he dismissed both candidates, Dent presumably when he became Two Face, and I guess Bruce was just that good at covering his tracks. In one of the Riddler Patient interviews in Asylum we find out that Riddler has deduced that Batman is a fraud who steals from criminals to get his gadgets. And finally In the interviews in City we learn that finding out Batman's Identity is still a fixation for Riddler, something Hugo Strange uses to taunt him since HE knows who Batman really is. Therefore Riddler's massive ego cannot process the fact that not only was his theory about Batman way off, but a theory he abandoned a decade ago was true, particularly since we can presume he abandoned it because Bruce outsmarted him, something Riddler could never accept.
One of the most iconic panels in Superman All-Stars was Superman looking in a mirror... and seeing Clark Kent in a Superman costume staring back. Not a joke. The body language, the stature, is so friggin' DIFFERENT that you'd be hard pressed to realize they're the same person.
I forgot where it happened but riddler found out Batman’s identity but Batman knew he was safe because he wouldn’t be special if everyone knew it so riddler kept it a secret
same with the majority of his villains, joker simply doesnt want to know, harley and ivy pretty much know but dont ac ton it coz they kidnap him each year for christmas shopping using hsi cards, you already covered riddler, penguin doesnt give ti out coz otherwiase thats a valuable asset lost (and i think even protects the secret a couple times so that he cna use it for barter) and the rest of his gallery either has no interest or doesnt care to know
in fact i think bane is the only one who would actually act on it, and joker would happily kill anyone who even THINKS of discovering/revealing who batman is because otherwise the mystery and thrills and excitement is gone
@@angel_aeon Ra's has traditionally had it figured out almost since day one, and in fact often the first meeting of Ra's and Batman is *Ra's infiltrating the Batcave* just as a show of force. Not harming or hurting anyone needlessly, just saying "I didn't destroy anything or harm anyone, nor reveal your secret because I respect you, but remember what I can do, Detective".
So this is a pretty sensible reaction. Yes Bruce's helmet is taken off on camera and people see it everywhere. However footage can be faked, could be a double etc, various things. To us he audience Batman's identity is obvious because we know it already, it's never a mystery to us. But to the people of Gotham it's not obvious at all. Nobody knows the extent of Batman's funding, some people think he's a myth or someone with superpowers, they don't know that he's super rich. They might just think it's one dude operating out of a small hideout. So it could be anyone really. Also Bruce Wayne is the polar opposite of Batman, he seems like a spoiled rich douchebag, so why would he be Batman?
I think with Riddler though he just wont admit that Bruce Wayne was the one beating him all those years. It's also obvious that he refuses to accept it due to the fact that he himself didn't uncover Bruce's identity
Very true. Because the differences between them are too pronounced. Even if we know Clark Kent is Superman it’s hard to imagine such a godlike hero settles down as an ordinary reporter.
This would have worked if they showed scarecrow faking footage before. Which probably would have been a cool thing to include adding a fear of what’s real to stakes without relaying on the gas
It would make more sense if scarecrow didn’t unmask Batman. Maybe people could think it’s faked if Joker or Harley unmasked Bats because people could think it was a joke. With the info we are given in game, if doesn’t make sense for Scarecrow to trick Gotham when it comes to Batman’s identity.
You’re correct Colonel, it did pop up in my recommendations. On the other hand, I found out about the story on TV Tropes. The Tequila drinking contest between Travis Willingham and Monica Rial. I was laughing so hard my face ached!
I love the idea that if Riddler himself figures out Batman’s identity (i.e. Hush) he feels like he’s got all the cards now, and instantly believes it. But if Batman’s identity is exposed in any other way that the Riddler didn’t plan for, he explodes and acts like it isn’t true, because he wasn’t the one who figured it out.
When I was younger, I read one of my Dad's old Superman comics from the 1980s where in the SECOND issue Lex Luther uses a computer that was capable of figuring out Superman's identity. Basically it ran through all this data from Superman's physical appearance to when he first appeared and became known to the general public. It also collected information on CLARK KENT as well because Lex knew there was some sort of connection between the two. The computer had more information on Clark other than his physical appearance, like the fact that his medical history showed that he was never sick or missed a day of school and that his actual reported birth was questionable. It also discovered a four year gap in his life between leaving Smallville and enrolling in Metropolis University where he pretty much just fell off the face of the Earth. The computer also discovered a connection between Superman and Lana Lang, who in turn had a connection to Clark Kent. Two of Lex's men also found a scrapbook in the Kent's house that had news clippings of Superman in it. After reviewing all the evidence, the computer's conclusion was: "CLARK KENT IS SUPERMAN". Amanda, the woman assigned to the computer, thought it was obvious but Lex just couldn't believe it. Like Riddler, his own ego prevented him from seeing the truth because he just couldn't comprehend someone like Superman with all that power could be so selfless and choose to have a normal life. Lex then fired the woman, got rid of the "useless" computer, and never seriously gave the conclusion a second thought.
The Riddler is like a /pol/ doxing master that knows how to find out anything, but whatever he finds he doubts because of his own weird conspiracy theories.
This is why I love Arkham's interpretation of the Riddler. He is smart, sure, but he is too delusional and thinks himself way smarter than he really is.
This actually touches on my favourite explanation as to why these genius villains never figure out the hero's identity. They simply can't bring themselves to believe that the person behind the mask is the same one wearing it even if all clues point towards that being the case. Nobody wants to believe mild and meek Clark Kent is the confident and powerful Superman. Nobody wants to believe that an ordinary teenager could be Spider-Man. Nobody wants to believe that a simple CSI who is always late is the Flash. This is a superhero's greatest defense, that those who try to beat them cannot believe that the person who bested them time and time again is the same person as the respective secret identity (whether by ego, logic or belief)
Yeah because Bruce Wayne is a rich idiot who secretly has a heart of gold and Superman is a dweeb and surprisingly they get along and no one really understands why I didn't know the Beacon of Hope that is Superman and the terrifying figure that is the God damn Batman who also strangely get along wonder if there's any connection there I'm just being crazy
He doesn't want to believe that , he just want batman as batman not a rich person , i think he thought batman cannot be a normal person with his high IQ
Honestly when i first heard him, i died laughing. I remember doing a side mission and still hearing people talking about my unmasking and the riddler pops out in denial. I guess its because he was disappointed and angry that he wasn't the one who found out. He took the secret identity thing as a his toughest challenge and at the end, he didnt solve it. But still, his reaction is priceless
This is one of the few games in my life where I completed every single thing in it. I collected every single riddler trophy. Took me literally days. 10/10 would do it again. Phenomenal game.
He's a egotistical narcissist among other things, so unless he figured it he won't believe anyone, in his mind everyone is stupid and so it can't be true, he always has to be right
Even in the comics this is exactly how Eddie would react. Bruce did such a good job keeping batman as far away from Bruce Wayne as possible. He’s made Bruce seem like nothing more than a weak trust fund baby that never even been in a fight before. Not some hardcore vigilante that can shrug off bullets on a nightly basis.
When i played new game plus after completing game first time then took riddler im then after the reveal this riddler speech still happened. Guess was fixed in a patch
Actually... it's the opposite... he knows for a fact that Batman is Bruce... he just doesn't WANT to believe it.... He's lying to himself.... And I love how he sounds similar to Jim Carey....
It's not as much as he doesn't believe it, it's more so he doesn't _want_ to believe it. He cant handle that he has been bested time and time again by a "spoiled rich kid" so he's in denial. And man, it's so satisfying to see Riddlers ego, and hubris just crumble at the thought of Bruce Wayne himself be shown as his superior. I love it.
Nygma doesn't want to believe that he couldn't figure out Batman's identity despite the clues. He doesn't want to admit that he didn't have all the answers.
This reminds me of when Count Dooku told Obi-wan about Sideous and the Senate, but Obi-wan refused to believe him. They don’t see what’s in front of them even when it’s spelled out for them.
What I like about the riddler is that he can’t accept that because he’s should’ve been the one who supposed to be solve the greatest riddle in Gotham or Arkham history
Another reason he refuses to believe Bruce is batman, hugo strange found out Bruce was Batman before riddler and even had riddler begging for the answer only to roast him after, and riddler probably refuses to believe hugo was right.
Basically because of Edwards narcissism he refused to believe that Bruce Wayne was Batman and in the ultimate irony believing that he was too "smart" to fall for Batman's trick became the ultimate idiot
This is similar to how Lex Luthor refuses to believe Clark Kent is Superman. Lex created a computer to find out Superman's identity, but when the computer said it was Clark Kent, he trashed the computer. Lex just can't fathom that a being of that much power would settle for being a clumsy reporter.
I especially like how when you finally beat the Riddler, the Joker conscience says something about "Great job Batman, beat him up & lock him up. Definitely better than getting him psychiatric help. Violence is the best medicine."
Kind of Ironic. In Batman Forever, Riddler was gushing over knowing who Batman was and went nuts when he couldn't eliminate him. Here, he refuses to believe who Batman is, despite the whole world knowing and that's driving him nuts.
“2 left?! 2!!! 2 Riddles remaining?! It’s like I’ve been transported to an alternate reality where you are the genius and I am the idiot with an overinflated sense of his own abilities!” -The Riddler
Riddler: Oh I get it! It’s some sort of code isn’t it? If I rearrange the letters in “Bruce Wayne” I get “Ucayne Brew” which is the name of a beer brewery on the outskirts of Gotham. The clues to your *ACTUAL* identity must be there! *BAHAHA!* Batman: … I don’t know if correcting him or going along with it will make it worse…
He has a point, all of the villains in Batman’s rogues gallery would have a hard time believing some rich guy with abandonment issues was the one constantly kicking their ass
Goes to show how well the whole secret identity thing works. Even when riddler knows his identity, the Batman side is so different, so extreme that riddler doesn’t even believe it.
I remember Two-Face said something along the lines of "If Batman is Bruce Wayne, then I'm the Queen of England" or something like that in BTAS lol Imagine you're playing COD or something online and the person whooping your ass says he's Elon Musk lmao
You have to remember is that at one point Riddler almost figured it out that it WAS Bruce Wayne, I think that because he wasn’t the one to figure it out and hold it over Batman. Because Riddler didn’t discover the fact then the fact isn’t true. I think Riddler, especially in this series, is a really interesting character to dissect. Shame in Knight he got reduced to awful Batmobile stuff :/

Riddler is somewhere between overthinking and underthinking
*"I WANT TO KNOW HIS REACTION TO CLARK KENT PUTTING ON AND TAKING OFF HIS GLASSES"*
One of the most iconic panels in Superman All-Stars was Superman looking in a mirror... and seeing Clark Kent in a Superman costume staring back. Not a joke. The body language, the stature, is so friggin' DIFFERENT that you'd be hard pressed to realize they're the same person.
*Takes glasses off*
Superman: "Now they recognise me."
*Puts glasses on*
Superman: "Now they don't."
Riddler really needs professional help.
Yeah, like Arkham Asylum. They really know how to turn people's lives around over there.

same with the majority of his villains, joker simply doesnt want to know, harley and ivy pretty much know but dont ac ton it coz they kidnap him each year for christmas shopping using hsi cards, you already covered riddler, penguin doesnt give ti out coz otherwiase thats a valuable asset lost (and i think even protects the secret a couple times so that he cna use it for barter) and the rest of his gallery either has no interest or doesnt care to know
in fact i think bane is the only one who would actually act on it, and joker would happily kill anyone who even THINKS of discovering/revealing who batman is because otherwise the mystery and thrills and excitement is gone
@@spiritretro3571 Ra's al Ghul too considering he took advantage of it in Red Robin.
Atleast batman's identity is still a secret to someone
Even the goons in the game think batman is a sort of high end government operative, that's where he gets his funding
"Bruuuuuce Waaaayne....He's the only one we didn't get. But we got the rest of them, didn't we?"

Denial and narcissism is one hell of a drug.
Yeah, just like pornography and hypersexuality is one hell of drug that it dysfunctions my brain and autism. ☹️
At least he actually admits to being bested, that's something I never thought I'd hear him say.
“I refuse to believe it”
That is why you fail
This is why I love Arkham's interpretation of the Riddler. He is smart, sure, but he is too delusional and thinks himself way smarter than he really is.
After fighting Riddler, he should just take off the mask to make Eddie fucking freak out.
Remember: Batman didn’t kill Nigma, the shock did.
Batman doesnt kill people.
The internal bloodloss does.
@@raddragon1373 Batman doesn’t kill, the aneurysm does
Nygma refuses to accept this specific truth because he fails to realize that Bruce is the mask, not Batman.
Bruuuuuuuuuce… Waaaaaaaaayne…
Oh, you’re not as smart as I thought you were…
Riddler: It's. Not. True.
Riddler's echo: It's. True.

Honestly when i first heard him, i died laughing. I remember doing a side mission and still hearing people talking about my unmasking and the riddler pops out in denial. There is also a cop guarding the evidence room that doesn't believe it.

As different as Paul Dano's version of the Riddler is from this one, this is probably the same reaction he'd have
Even in the comics this is exactly how Eddie would react. Bruce did such a good job keeping batman as far away from Bruce Wayne as possible. He’s made Bruce seem like nothing more than a weak trust fund baby that never even been in a fight before. Not some hardcore vigilante that can shrug off bullets on a nightly basis.
Batman: *Gets shot*
Bruce’s photographer the next day, at a beach photoshoot, looking at Bruce’s multiple, very visible bullet wounds:
I captured Riddler before I completed the story so I didn’t even hear this. It’s awesome that the developers put these lines into the game!

I love it.
the pinnacle of overthinking
Nygma doesn't want to believe that he couldn't figure out Batman's identity despite the clues. He doesn't want to admit that he didn't have all the answers.
Riddler: Oh its Bruce wayne
Bruce Wayne: Puts on the Cowl
Riddler: *Gasp* BATMAN!
Batman: *reveals his identity after so long*
Riddler: “I’m gonna pretend I didn’t see that.”
I typically collect all the riddler trophies before the story ends so I don't think I've heard that dialogue

It takes a rich man to be Batman. The Riddler should know that.
I love this. He so badly wants to believe his number 1 rival is something more than just a rich pretty boy that he becomes blind
Weirdly similar energy to "Where's my goddamn electric car, Bruce!?"
When I first heard this, I was like .......are you fucking serious?
Another reason he refuses to believe Bruce is batman, hugo strange found out Bruce was Batman before riddler and even had riddler begging for the answer only to roast him after, and riddler probably refuses to believe hugo was right.
Riddlers mistake it seems, is believing the trust fund kid who appears on tv is the real personality of Bruce Wayne
As a certain Demon-contracted nobleman once said, "There's nothing more deceiving than an obvious truth."
I especially like how when you finally beat the Riddler, the Joker conscience says something about "Great job Batman, beat him up & lock him up. Definitely better than getting him psychiatric help. Violence is the best medicine."
I mean, his reasoning as to why Batman can't possibly be Bruce Wayne is definitely in character.
We going ignore how he grappled backwards
Kind of Ironic. In Batman Forever, Riddler was gushing over knowing who Batman was and went nuts when he couldn't eliminate him. Here, he refuses to believe who Batman is, despite the whole world knowing and that's driving him nuts.
Batman is Bruce Wayne
Riddler- Doubt
“2 left?! 2!!! 2 Riddles remaining?! It’s like I’ve been transported to an alternate reality where you are the genius and I am the idiot with an overinflated sense of his own abilities!” -The Riddler
Riddler needs to wake up and smell the coffee.
Sounds like some serious denial lmao
Riddler: Oh I get it! It’s some sort of code isn’t it? If I rearrange the letters in “Bruce Wayne” I get “Ucayne Brew” which is the name of a beer brewery on the outskirts of Gotham. The clues to your *ACTUAL* identity must be there! *BAHAHA!*
Batman: … I don’t know if correcting him or going along with it will make it worse…
This is hilarious.
Batman has such a characteristic personality, that if you say that he's Bruce Wayne, no one will believe because of Wayne's personality
The most surprising thing here is that Riddler actually admitted that he had been bested by Batman.
Riddler just admitted that he was actually bested by Batman many times
I remember Two-Face said something along the lines of "If Batman is Bruce Wayne, then I'm the Queen of England" or something like that in BTAS lol
Imagine you're playing COD or something online and the person whooping your ass says he's Elon Musk lmao
I love how Riddler would rather not know Batman’s identity because humanizing the man who beat him would damage his ego
If only every villain had that ego
