- Today we’re talking about another one of the Hatfield and McCoy feuds most famous events. On Election Day in 1882, an argument between a Hatfield and a McCoy escalated into violence. Ellison Hatfield, the brother of Devil Anse, was mortally wounded at the hands of three sons of Randall McCoy. A few days later Ellison was dead and the McCoy brothers paid a heavy price in a grove of pawpaw trees near the banks of the Tug Fork. Here we try to tell you about the context of the times and the many twists and turns that you don’t normally see in modern depictions of the feud.
