  • Howdy, in this episode we'll be soldering on the connectors to the GPS unit so that we can connect your NEO-M8N GPS bought here goo.gl/7Z3gh1 to your Omnibus F4 V1 flight control board goo.gl/bYpmjJ. The wiring colour codes are below in video description, Press SHOW MORE to see the FULL details, Matt
    Wire Colour Coding
    =========================
    Below is the colour coding of the wires on the NEO-M8N GPS unit I bought here goo.gl/7Z3gh1.
    RED - This is the +5V wire
    BLACK - This is the GND wire
    WHITE - This is the Tx wire which is connected to Rx on the FC
    YELLOW - This is the Rx wire which is connected to Tx on the FC
    GREEN - This is the SCL wire (for the compass)
    BLUE - This is the SDA wire (for the compass)
    Using a Different GPS Unit?
    ================
    If you are using a different GPS unit than this one goo.gl/7Z3gh1, then it's likely that the colour coding is going to be different.
    So go very, VERY careful and consult your manual or the manufacturer to confirm the correct wiring.

    Sorry Mat just seen your clarification vid (17Jun17) concerning GPS unit volts input - bloody darn good ...joe

    Hi Matt, I have used a naze32 breakout cable for the gps, unpick the cables and remove them all from the plastic connector as you would with a servo plug, solder the wires as you have done in this video then push the pins back into the required holes on the connector and you cannot accidentally get the magic smoke and the gps can be unplugged using one connector.

      Howdy fella, we most likely won't be, however makes sense to wire the plug up while we're at it :) Matt

    m8n is really impressed me that i've stop using m6 for sometimes . but i hope soon the m8n price go down to m6 lol , I always thinking of budget build because the cheaper the build the lesser hard feeling when losing it . btw 2 lost and 1 bad crush so far including a quadrotor . even though i am more confident compare to last year but i'd prefer to prepare for the worst . Great video as always !

      Howdy fella. I've not knowling used a M6 so can't comment on them. The M8N's have worked really well for me so far. And yea loosing the kit is always a concern, being one fifth of the price of a EagleTree Vector would make it more palatable, although just as annoying ;) Matt

    Matt can you check the tx rx cables shown in the description
    (WHITE - This is the Tx wire which is connected to Rx on the FC
    YELLOW - This is the Rx wire which is connected to Tx on the FC)
    I had to swap them over to get it to work
    Just seen you had the same problem in the Live video
    Joe

    • @RagTheNutsOff
      @RagTheNutsOff  7 років тому

      Howdy Joe, in this instance it doesn't matter as it'll either work or won't. And if it won't just switch them around and it will then work. It's not like the GND & 5V which switching those wires around which would have nasty side effects :) Matt

    I'm bit late for a Q but the Pix GPS unit is rated for 2.7 to 3.6 volts so will 5 Volts be OK

    Hi, can we program/configurate this gps module through u-center and does it save settings that we change after power off??

  • @gjheydon
    @gjheydon 7 років тому

    actually this plugs are really easy. I have also done the JST SH connects and they aree fiddly. I do it mainly because it gives one less point of failure and also looks very clean and with the 1x6 enclosure it it difficult to stuff it up.

    • @RagTheNutsOff
      @RagTheNutsOff  7 років тому

      Howdy Gordon, yea the JST Sh are fiddly to say the least, I solder on to the wires leaving plenty of spare length and then cover it all up with some heatshrink :) Matt

    Matt...the GPS you use in the tutorial is not the same one you recommend on the Banggood web ad. At least the wire colors are not identical. I can't follow your tutorial as my wires are not the same color. I suspicion Banggod has substituted an alternate GPS. Please advise?

      Hi Paul, I have no idea on that one, I would suggest you contact BG and as for the correct wiring diagram, Matt

    Matt, what servo size and brand do you recommend for the big daddy Drax?

    • @RagTheNutsOff
      @RagTheNutsOff  7 років тому

      Howdy Derrick, I don't own a big Drak, however see Chris Click for suggestions as that model is HUGE and servos for that one cannot be skimped on. Matt

    Matt, do you think that these GPS cables would fit (with cable rearrangement) into the F4 V2 board (it does look like a 6 pin to me) :)

    • @RagTheNutsOff
      @RagTheNutsOff  7 років тому

      Howdy Jaikishan, absolutely!
      You need the extra 6 pin connector to do that. I have another board I need to solder up, so will record that part of the series when I get to doing it. Matt

    • @jkishan16
      @jkishan16 7 років тому

      I'm sorry, you've lost me, on the FB group, you've linked the 6pin JST connectors, but we need not buy those if these connectors can be directly plugged in right? (Granted we need to 'rearrange' the wires.)
      So all the 6GPS+compass wires can be put into a single 6pin connector and connected to the v2 board yes?

    • @RagTheNutsOff
      @RagTheNutsOff  7 років тому

      Short answer, Yes!

  • @vovsen123
    @vovsen123 7 років тому

    This omnibusF4 proV2 is short of one port when using port 1 for Sbus, port 3 for Compass and port 6 for GPS. I need telemetry to my taranis but no ports is available :-( do you know how to get telemetry to the taranis when using alle the ports?

    • @RagTheNutsOff
      @RagTheNutsOff  7 років тому

      Howdy Villy, not sure, I tend to use the L9R on my setups that doesn't support telem, Matt

    • @vovsen123
      @vovsen123 7 років тому

      Matthew Ogborne L9R do support telemetry through the smartport. I have decided to ditch the compass and relay on gps solely, and use uart 3 for telemetry.

    are you at the point of replacing all your vector models with the cheaper inav stuff matt?

    • @RagTheNutsOff
      @RagTheNutsOff  7 років тому

      Howdy Jamble, the models that have Vectors in them are keeping the Vectors. The Mini Talon, Mini Drak and X-UAV Clouds have Vectors in, however I won't be buying another as #1 3 is enough, #2 iNav and these FC boards are one fifth of the price, Matt

      @RagTheNutsOff  6 років тому

      Hi Robert, you'll need to contact the place where you bought the GPS and ask for a wiring diagram, I'm only able to answer questions on the suggested kit, Matt

  • @gjheydon
    @gjheydon 7 років тому

    Instead of Soldering onto the end of the wires I gotth "Geekcreit® 310pcs 2.54mm Male Female Dupont Wire Jumper With Header Connector Housing Kit" from banggood www.banggood.com/Geekcreit-310pcs-2_54mm-Male-Female-Dupont-Wire-Jumper-With-Header-Connector-Housing-Kit-p-1063303.html?rmmds=myorder and I just cut off the jst-xh connectors and then crimpted on the new plugs. I was also able to 1x6P connector housing and it just all connects in a line from the rx, tx, 5v gnd, sda, sdc (?) and is really clean. This GPS module works great.

    Hi Matt,
    Did you tried to upgrade it to v3? Somebody had success on it however BG says it cannot be: www.rcgroups.com/forums/showpost.php?p=35661541&postcount=5
    Does is have a supercap or battery on it? Does it store the configured baud rate permanently?

    • @RagTheNutsOff
      @RagTheNutsOff  7 років тому

      Howdy Sequadon, I've not tried upgrading, it works fine as it is. It does have a tiny battery on the underside so it remembers the last fix it had and the baud rate is set already I believe at 115200, Matt
