Totally agree! While the original is a cult classic nanar masterpiece, the sequel is the real stinking failure... By the bye, "nanar" is the French word for "so bad they're good films", just like the real and original Samurai Cop!
I just lost my mind. I have heard of this film. My friend, Gerald Okamura, is in it. But when I recognized one of the interior locations as Grandmaster Eric Lee's home where I shot my first feature with both he and Gerald, I realized how small the martial arts world in movies really is.
Samurai Cop exists in a world were where a police officer can afford a California beach front property with a pool, and hospitals have a dental office/burn unit
The two lead actors deserve some recognition for carrying this movies priceless hillarity. I forgot their names already, but someone should remember them.
This movie is so talked about that at the end of the day the lack of production quality and worst acting possible has paid off to some of those involved.
Amazing video (editing, research, commentary, etc) for one of my favorite movie of all time. You did great and you deserves way, wayyyy more views and subs!
I woke up at 3:30 a.m. this morning. I couldn't get back to sleep so I started looking around on Hulu, Netflix, and Prime. I stumbled upon the Riffrax Live takedown of "Samurai Cop" on Amazon Prime, and I laughed my head off for the next hour and a half. Then, I fell asleep and overslept, making me late for work. Totally worth it
If it wasn't for Rifftrax, I would never have heard of this movie. It's a masterpiece and everything wrong with a movie all rolled into one! Great job!
Hey Layton, great documentary on Amir Shervan and Samurai Cop. I've seen all of Shervan's movies from his great run (1987-1992) between Hollywood Cop to Samurai Cop. He made some the crappiest great movies of that era.
I only heard of this film about a month ago and it's so bad that I love it. It reminds of the disaster movie "The Core" how that movie even got a cinema release still boggles my mind to this day. I got it cheap on DVD a few years later and gave it to my mum as she likes a good disaster movie and we watched it on holiday. You'd think we were watching a comedy by all the laughter that was coming from both of us. I recommend watching it.
If they went back and redid every scene to make it more like an actual movie, I would never watch it again. The best possible version is the one that we currently have! I still watch it all the time!
When I think about my own life, have I ever gone out and taken a chance to follow my dreams like this director? No - so I respect him for that! Although it is so laughable.
I can't say what my favorite scene is anymore because every time I watch it, it changes. But in the first 20 minutes, I love, "shoot em! You got em!" There's a scene near the end that's hard to catch because of the terrible sound quality, Fujiyama tells one of his mobster's to do something and he replies, "ok boss" in the dumbest theatrical evil man voice ever.
Actually the Samauri Cop's house went into three different locations: a suburban neighborhood, a beach, and then a city block. No wonder the bad guys had such a hard time figuring out how to get to his house considering it's a portal to three different places.
Great video, man. Just watched Samurai Cop and is mesmerising how bad-good it is. The way how they take all so serious is remarkable. All respect to the professionals who made this gem possible. You made the best making off I could wish for. Just make me want to watch it again. Thanks!
Samurai Cop vs Maniac Cop. The movie we never thought we wanted yet after its discovery, we find we can't live without it. Keep smashing it Mr. Eversaul. Need to tell people to start subscribing or we'll have to shoot......shoot them.
After a bottle of red wine and a doobie, I watched (and laughed) my way through this cult classic last night. Can anyone recommend anything similarly bad/good, with the exception of The Room - I just thought that was plain bad.
It seems like the director was trying to ripoff elements from multiple sources, like Lethal Weapon, Miami Vice, Cobra, and even Highlander to some degree. The whole "tough renegade cop who bends rules to get results" trope was popularized by movies like Dirty Harry and The French Connection in the 70's, and it continued to be popular well into the 80's and early 90's, which is basically why the protagonist in this movie talks and acts the way he does.
Well it's interesting because Jay of RLM has even commented on how incompetent Amir's movies have been if you compare his earliest work(Hollywood Cop) compared to his last movie(Samurai Cop). Usually filmmakers get better the more movies they create.
I gotta be honest, as incompetent as the movie is Matt Hannon is pretty natural in his scenes, when he's trying, of course. The scene at 8:49 is an example, at least for me.
I love the Captain scenes. Always make me laugh so hard. I would imagine that he's like the store owner and these guys are bugging the heck out of him and he's telling them all to leave.
When watching this for the first time today after seeing multiple reviews like this on the movie I was actually trying to rationalize the shit out of everything that happened. Like how you and others will say Shervan forgot to cut the scene where the police chief gets mad at Frank for kissing him. I think the scene kept going cus they want to show the police chief is actually pretty soft when officers aren't around. So I think he waited in the pointing pose until Joe and Frank were completely out of sight and then sat back down and laughed about the situation.
Easily the best ‘it’s so bad it’s good”, movie in my list..I think it’s even better than The Room. I was also wondering why and how Samurai Cop was able to have such a excellent visual quality at 1080p, and you certainly answered my question!
So, in your opinion, is it better than "The Room" or worse, and is being worse better or is being better worse? Also, where does "Birdemic" fall in the hierarchy of crap movies?
To be clear, #Samurai Cop is easily my number 1 favorite bad movie of all time that I have no problem spending my time to re-watch. The police escalation tactics are incredibly inaccurate ("We'll call for back up when we need it!" sums it up after killing a guy then running over him while being involved in a high speed chase and shootout), that opening chase scene altogether, the ongoing tone def with the relevancy of whats happening in each scene throughout the entire movie, the technical problems (like not having budget for proper sound recording), the pointless fast cut edits, re-shots, random bad guys emerging from roofs with guns, bad guys re-using that same shotgun and other weapons, awkward screen compositions, the wig, the "I'm telling these sons of bitches..." exposition..., Cameron having become my favorite female henchmen, I love every scene. And Dave Matthews named his song 'Samurai Cop' after the movie simply because he was watching the movie while writing the lyrics. Blows "The Room" to down to number 2, which also is a very good bad movie worth watching at least once a year. Need to watch Birdemic. To intentionally bad movies (like Sharknados or some of those non-Netflix straight to Netflix movies) into perspective, I don't waste my time on those...I feel myself getting dumber by watching something like that.
Just Me one of my favorite details is how many times the wheels and tires of the Caprice change throughout the cuts and shots (not to mention the van's front lower spoiler appearing and disappearing), and just the general condition of that car. I give a pass or ok on most movies where there are minor linearity problems (like the yellow Porsche in Commando)..it just makes Samurai Cop even better! I'm only a movie enthusiast, not a film maker or anything. This would be my side job if I had time.
@@mattb9664 I will have to rewatch it. I tried to get my wife to watch it with me last night, but after 10 minutes she proclaimed, "Sorry, this just isn't very funny." Sometimes she has zero sense of humor. She laughed at the wig, but that was about it. She found the hit-and-run scene more shocking than amusing. So sad.
You can call him "Foodge" all you want, to me it will always be Fudge. I'm pretty sure that how it's written on the script and they just called him Foodge instead while shooting to try make it sound less dumb
To be honest I came across this video a bunch of times and because of its title I never watched it. It's got a click bait title and in all honesty, as a samurai cop fan it's really worth watching. But the title for it does no justice and should be changed. I'm a big fan of the movies Amir Shervan's made in the States.
The producer made this movie for $60,000 and I read it has made a little over $300,000 to date. He made money which was his goal. I realize that was over a 30 year period. lol
