You missed the fact that Dave Matthews Band was partially responsible for this film coming back. He named one of his songs Samurai Cop and said live on stage that he named it off of this crazy movie he really liked. This caused increased interest in the film.

I feel for this film. My own first feature (shot in the '80's) had a couple of the same cast members and was shot in some of the same locations (Gerald was my main villain). The martial arts community is tight. It was just as weird and never got properly distributed either. There must have been something in the air at that time. You have given me hope.

Sometimes I just think it's amazing that movies get made at all. There's so much effort in making even the simplest things that I gotta give respect to the independent filmmakers of the 70s, 80s and 90s.

If I may even refer to Ed Wood... his films were incompetent but they still got made through sheer enthusiasm and have some entertainment value. Mad respect to all filmmakers working outside the system.

@@SirSmoldham Wood is the guardian angel of bad cinema. To me a movie so bad it's good is entertaining. "The Room" was never entertaining to me. Just painfully slow, boring and a real chore to get through. Woods movies were never boring. They have pacing issues sure, but even the static and slow scenes are really fascinating. Watching Tor Johnson REALLY struggling to rise from his grave is just such a study in painfully slow but VERY entertaining cinema.

Speaking of Stallone and Schwarzenegger, you should do 1992's Stop Or My Mom Will Shoot. Stallone still considers it the lowest point of his career, and Schwarzenegger openly came out 25 years later that he read the script and found it so bad, he used their bitter rivalry to trick Stallone into the movie, and Stallone took the bait. Stop Or My Mom Will Shoot was universally panned by critics and users alike.

Obviously what happened is that his dual-classing was poorly chosen. See if you're a Samurai you get bonuses to MELEE attack via katana but Cops need bonuses to RANGED attack via gun. The two classes don't sync well. He should've chosen classes that sync better with gun skills like Hillbilly, Marine, or Inner City Middle-Schooler to have really optimized the Cop class. Didn't he bother reading the Etrian Odyssey Wiki before starting his playthrough?!?

See what he thought was that he could add ranged proficiency to help round out his character, but all it really did was weigh down his stats.
What's worse is that, since he took a level in Cop, he won't get the final Samurai Class ability at the level cap, which is arguably the only reason to play a Samurai.

There are two unsung games I would love to see you dive into:
-NBA Baller Beats, the Majesco-published Xbox Kinect title where you danced along to music with a basketball and dribbled in your living room. I worked on it in marketing. It was insane. It was such a fun game. It didn’t need to exist but it did.
-Gladius, the Lucasarts forgotten (and critically acclaimed) gladiator-themed strategy rpg. Alex Neuse, the lead behind the Bit.Trip franchise, actually really was super involved on Gladius, and over on the Gladius discord he and a few of the developers have popped in and talked about the development, shared asset links from old CD-R, talked about how they wish Disney would let them make a sequel.

If you're looking for a low-budget yet earnest film with a story behind it, look no further than 1998's "Fatal Deviation". Written-by, directed-by and starring one James Bennett, it was originally intended to be an audition tape to show to some Hong Kong producers reportedly interested in working with him.
It became Ireland's first full-length martial arts movie.

It was hard to find if you wanted the blu ray version. I ended up getting one on amazon for $12. It was back ordered though and i had to wait a whole month for it, but it was worth it. It's one of those rare accident's of genius/It's so bad it's good type of movies. This movie also really got me into Robert Z'Dar. First time i ever saw him was Tango and Cash. Then after this movie i got interested in maniac cop.

Honestly, I wish I had some of Shervan's "I want to live life like this and I'm going to do it" drive in me. I've abandoned so many arts endeavors by criticizing my own stuff to death, and in general have always avoided pursuing things of my "dreams" because I've seen those things as something that only happen to the few lucky ones "who are able to think too much of themselves from the start." RIP Amir Shervan, Hollywood movie director.
