- Опубліковано 4 жов 2024
- In this in-depth retrospective, I tell the story behind Stephen King's 1999 3-part miniseries "Storm of the Century", an underrated horror gem from the silver age of the T.V. miniseries. I delve deep into its development, production and legacy while providing my own thoughts on the series. Starring: Tim Daly, Colm Feore, Debrah Farentino, Jeffrey DeMunn and many, many others. Directed by Craig Baxley. Written for television by Stephen King.

the greatest stephen kings adaptation ever
Born in lust turn to dust born in sin come on in
@@tahnadana5435 Adaptation of what? It was an original screenplay.
Been doin' that with liberals. It don't work. :)
"Storm of the Century" had to happen after the events of "Dolores Claiborne" because the town manager guy mentions her and "whatever happened during the eclipse" when he wanted to kill Linoge in the jail cell. And yeah, this mini series is one of my favorite King stories brought to tv or film. And as someone suggested in the comments, a Linoge prequel set in Roanoke Island that's mentioned in the mini series would be fun to see.
Yeah he even mentions Dolores by name. I'm pretty sure the events in DC took place in the 60's and the events of Storm of the Century was in 88 or 89.
Lots strangely enough didn't catch that. I sure did!
Wtf are you talking about? Friends are definitely needed. God bless you
It's nice to see people finally recognizing and appreciating this one. Back when it first came out, people hated it solely based on the downer ending and, up until about a few years ago, that seemed to continue. This is a great film that deserved far more appreciation than it received.
@Mark Green Yeah, I'm sure there are people out there saying, "I'd love to recommend this movie, but someone on UA-cam made a comment that didn't go into every intricate detail of why some people might not like it."
I completely agree, I think this is one is brilliant. The atmosphere, and the perfect casting of Colm feore as Legion.
Feore’s portrayment, the brutal ending, the slow pace, sense of dread and most importantly: the atmosphere, that fan-tas-tic atmosphere and music!
One of the best mini series of all time!
The obvious prequel concept would be Linoge accosting the residents of Roanoke Island in 1587 (as was referenced in the movie). The contrasts between the two communities could be explored, as it would seem that the people of Roanoke resisted Linoge, only to then be destroyed.
My own idea for a sequel might be the return to Little Tall Island by Ralph Anderson, now changed through his years with Linoge. Arriving to find his mother now married to Hatch, and Hatch's daughter Pippa back to living on the island after a messy divorce. Linoge himself has died (far sooner than he had expected to), leaving Ralphie's tutelage somewhat incomplete. He wields great power, yet hasn't been fully consumed by the evil of Linoge.
Both are great possibilities!
Amazing vision. Please write ✍️ to Kung about this!!!
"Perhaps you tricked yourselves", a line that I have never forgotten since seeing the movie for the first time. I honestly cannot tell you exactly why but this movie is in my Top 5 favorite movies of all time.
A Layton Eversaul video is like a Stephen King adaptation. They may be few and far between, but there is always excitement when they arrive.
If you like his stuff, you might dig ours as well. New episode on CARRIE just dropped today: ua-cam.com/video/LTjWRzrzgWw/v-deo.html
There's SK adaptations every year. More than 2 a year most times.
The Storm is so genial I need to watch it every winter ❄️🥶 for last 15 years and every time I learn something new ...
Colm Feore's Performance Brilliant.
I've rewatched Storm Of The Century more than any other of Stephen King's stories. And, I've rewatched most of them. I think, I've now watched Storm Of The Century 6 times. There's just something special to me, about Storm Of The Century. It never gets old to me.
When I watch I always have a feeling that its based on a true event. Dk why... Something very Real about it. Like Im watching a Documentary.
@@DirtySanchez943 Storm Of The Century does mention the disappearance of the people, from Roanoke, which really happened. Maybe that's what you're thinking of.
I watch it at least once every winter - preferably when it's snowing outside.😉🌨️🌬️❄️
@@kristennelson3190 Hahaha my wife and I do the same. Glad to see others out there.
_...my favorite Stephen King movie...it's frightening and calming to me...i can watch it anytime..._ ❤...
I enjoyed this and Rose Red. ABC really made sure these mini series were given the spectical and chills they deserve. Plus, who didn't love those Stephen King cameos.
Rose Red was abysmal.
For a while Stephen King was keeping the cast of Wings working lol
Hahaha True
The town meeting was a great showcase for who Linoge was. Revealing everyone's dirty little secrets is what the "accuser of the bretheren" does. It said demons do that during exorcism, they'll blurt out the sins of anyone present to weaken them.
I loved Daly's accent in the epilogue. Linoge takes another strike at Daly when he becomes a detective in San Francisco, presenting himself as a stately wealthy San Franciscan elderly gent going for a stroll with his boy. It ends on a cruel note as it began, with the viscious murder of the old woman.
Linoge was not a Demon he was an old world Sorcerer looking for a young Apprentice to carry on his ways!
I LOVE this miniseries. I've watched it like 50 times.
This has always been my favorite! Watched it as a kid and never forgot a single bit of it. Haunts you.
"Give me what and I'll go" will never not be a common phrase in my household.
This movie creeped the fuck out of me when I was a child. Can’t wait to watch this after work! You always make great content.
Great work, Layton!
I still think about Storm of the Century regularly. Midnight Mass gave me a similar vibe because of the setting.
I agree with King. This film was a masterpiece of dark art and produced fear based on tension and atmosphere. Linoge was a masterly crafted villain with respect for his rival revealing to Mike that his son was safe and cared for in the final scene. Not the best reward for Mike with whom we all cried, but an acknowledgement of Linoge toward heart of the hero that opposed him.
This is definitely in my top 5 SK movies. Love the atmosphere and characters. Whenever it snows in my area I watch it.
My buddy and I rented this In 2002 at the age of 14. We stayed up until 4am and were disappointed because it wasn't action packed. ...I forgot about it and found it 3 years ago on here and rewatched it and have become absolutely obsessed. I bought the screenplay. I've watched it probably 300 times at least. Something about it is so relatable and comforting. I'm shocked at how many people have watched/follow this obscure TV movie from 23 years ago. I've never met someone else who's seen it. But damn it's just so so good. Maybe better with age.
I'm sorry....three HUNDRED times? Surely this is hyperbole.
that'd be over once a month since 2002, i very much doubt it
@@6661313 once a month? Ive watched it 3x in one day...
@@6661313 and that's just since 2019.
Colm Feore and his character really stole the show in this series. He is a very calculating antagonist. It always seems as though he's the one in control in every situation he finds himself in. I also love how it isn't explicitly said what Andre Linoge is suppose to be. I've heard theories ranging from him being a powerful warlock to the physical embodiment of evil and many more. This is what great story telling looks like.
9:25 Ha! That's always been my main(e) critique with King productions, but it's not an easy dialect to imitate. It's more like a drawl than anything. Fred Gwynne in "Pet Semetery" does it best, I think.
I remember watching this as a child with my mother and grandmother all of us being fans of King and to this day I consider this to be one of the best things that he has written
This is my favorite horror mini-series
This one has stuck with me since I’ve seen it. More so than the other previous televised mini series.
One of my favorite lines is...Go ahead, tell the truth and shame the devil."
I was so happy when this thing became available in HD, it's King's definitive "people bickering in a room" tale.
I liked Storm of the Century and Rose Red. When the trailer for Midnight Mass came out, I really thought it might turn out to be new adaptation of Storm of the Century since Mike Flanigan did so well with Doctor Sleep.
Rose Red was really enjoyable!!! I was expecting it to be bad but really enjoyed it
I remember watching this as a teen, when I was well into a Stephen King reading phase. Brings back a lot of memories seeing it again. I couldn't think of a better person to cover it, so thank you, and keep up the great work! You deserve far more subscribers.
Thanks for watching!
I totally agree. This is my favorite King series.
i remember watching this with my mom when it first came out. we both enjoyed it but, hated the ending. we have the dvd of it. but, since her passing away last april, i have not had it in me to watch it. that was kind of our thing, make some popcorn and watch a king movie. those were good times.
Used to go with my mom to the movies all the time and we would watch TV series after TV series together cause she had no one else it seemed. What brings comfort to me now is knowing I had that in my life that others never do and never will because they don't have someone that wants to love them enough to spend time with them. Lost my mom last year and it pains me to this minute I'm writing this but it is what it is. I feel for you 100%. Keep carrying on as best as you can. That's all anyone could ask for.
It’s my favorite work. My mom and I watch it every winter. I’m desperate for a sequel!
Great film! One of my all time favorite. I always saw the main antagonist as being Merlin, finally selecting a new Arthur. It plays at the darkness of “old magic”, you pay as you go.
Well said!
It’s funny you say that as Stephen King has a character named Maerlyn in the Dark Tower series that is based on that. It’s likely that they are both one and the same. Which means that is the father of Randall Flagg
I would love to see you tackle "Rose Red" and the "shinning". Rose red had terrible reviews but always LOVED it as a kid and it really got me into horror.
Both are more than likely. In fact, odds are I'll end up covering every Stephen King miniseries.
Loved Rose Red, too! Helped that Marnie from Halloweentown was in it.
This was perfectly described and reviewed. I love this series and just rewatched it in UA-cam. Linoge has been a fascinating character to explore.
RIP to Cable TV Mini-series. This type of format gave an extra epicness to the story. Love your vid about this series. I have watched this vid 6 times already. You did an amazing job. Only downside is that its only 20min. Cant get enough. You did an amazing job. Hope your channel will keep growing.
My uncle got me this movie on DVD one year for Christmas when I was a kid but never watched it. I'm going to have to check it out now!
Awesome video we need a widescreen blu ray transfer for sure.
Loved it. Still think about it today and often think and ask the question what will you do. And some things you can never forget. Something like that. - Toronto, Canada.
Brilliantly written and produced, good job!
I loved this, still watch it every couple of years.
the greatest stephen kings adaptation ever
i love this miniseries. I'm from the area of Maine where they filmed this movie and i remember the film crews blocking the main street and all the traffic issues. the ferry boat you see in the movie is the Captain Henry Lee that used to service between bass harbor and swan's island (where i am from). this story also hits home because he did SUCH a good job of writing (and the actors for portraying) real Maine people. its really in a league of its own.
This is my favorite King movie ever. I think I've watched it 50 times and it still gets me every time.
I need to express my gratitude for your amazing videos. I really enjoy them as a horror fan. They are insightful, funny, and entertaining. Thanks for all you do.
Thanks for watching them!
Oh man, if this has the same level of gut punch to the soul as The Mist . . . no wonder people were upset. I love The Mist however, so maybe I'll check this out one day.
They both have sad endings and Jeffrey DeMunn, so you shouldn't hate it.
I can't wait for your take on Rose Red.
I've still got my copy along with Kingdom Hospital, and I watch it every winter. Thanks for the reminder!
I was 19 when this released, and I loved it. It's still one of my favorites. I wish WB would release it on Blu-Ray, but I have the DVD.
One thing a lot of people miss is the connection with the stones,. Linoge is simply another name for our favorite man in black.
What a great little video review!
If you haven't already done it, the Tommyknockers was a wonderfully tense read and had it enjoyed a nice run in the mid 90s as a miniseries.
I'll definitely be covering The Tommyknockers. I love the book, and the miniseries is great cheesy 90s sci-fi horror.
@@LaytonEversaul that's great, i'll keep an eye out in the coming weeks to months... and do me a favor and mention how the book describes the gelatinous state of the bodies of the ' influenced.'
My very favorite Stephen King story!
I really like this one. I watch it at least once or twice a year just enjoying the tale.
Great job with the documentary. Great job avoiding spoilers without compromising the narrative.
I try.
One of my favorites along with Rose Red
Awesome video! I'll have to check out storm of the century now!
Always love to see you pop up in my feed, shall watch this shortly, thanks Layton, keep up the good work
The character of Anderson and the actor who played him is what put the series over the top for me. I read the book/teleplay before watching it, so I knew the ending. The way it was acted though is what gave it that emotional gut punch. Much like The Mist and Se7en, and that’s what stays with you. People bitching about “happy endings” should not be watching horror films.
Extremely Excellent as always 👏 👌 👍
I’ve watched the movie several times it’s one of my favorite enjoyed the review
If Stephen has an idea for a sequel I’m all in!!
Great film extremely underrated.
Digging your channel. Would love you to talk about two of my favorite underrated King adaptations of The Night Flier and Thinner. Both extremely under appreciated films.
I remember watching this in HS and loving it. I was just talking about wanting to rewatch it and then you release this video. Obviously a sign
Great review man. Really enjoyed that.
Thanks!
love your reviews!!
Seen this a bunch and I've always had so many questions.Could Linoge have killed them all?Who was Linoge, what was Linoge? It seemed he always knew it would be Ralphie. What was his work he referred to?Awesome series
A prequel or sequel would be fantastic, but I can't see Colm Feore coming back. But we can hope.
I would settle for another actor taking "a new form", but it would be a huge win to get Feore back for something like that.
@@LaytonEversaul I would only accept Colm Feore, who is a superb actor in his own right. If they can't get him, I'm not interested.
I watched this when it first aired. I was 14 and the terror and tragedy of the ending hit me hard back then. Now with a son of my own its even more horrifying. Definitely agree with King that it's his best tv miniseries.
this, Rose Red, Kingdom Hospital are my favorite and most underrated King miniseries
Great (In Depth) Video. Colm Feore would be my FIRST choice to play Richard Throckett Straker in a Salem's Lot Remake.
Great choice!
@@LaytonEversaul Thanks
Was wondering when video was coming out! Thanks!
Great video. I do so enjoyed Storm of the Century and actually saw it without knowing it was a King story, and it surely delivered the goods. I was a big fan of the ending.
I just saw your video and I love this show. I would love to see a sequel.
Damn, this cast is top notch!!
This was a fantastic mini series and I loved when it it would replay on sci Fi channel. I've often thought we've seen Lenoge return in the form of Flag as I firmly believe him to be the wizard returning for one of his grand schemes.
Nice review. Loved the miniseries. Would love a good sequel.
I love Storm of the century. I watch it 3 or 4 days out yhe weeks.
Its a shame your are not getting more views Pal , keep up the good work , 💪 👍
Thanks!
This is, in fact, one of my favorite King's stories. I love the climax and both the hope and despair it entails: Legion is one of the many names Randall Flagg goes by, so Linoge needing a heir means he's actually mortal; but at the same time he did get a heir, so even if he dies his legacy continues.
I mean, my favorite King miniseries is Rose Red but Storm of the Century is easily the second best. I vividly remember the ending even though I haven't actually seen it in at least 15 years or so. Surprised to learn that there was any sort of backlash to the ending as I thought that that was what made the series so memorable.
I guess people in 1999 were looking for happy endings in their primetime horror dramas.
Great freaking channel man! I’m hooked 🤘🏼
Thank you!
I like Rose Red, too. Fun miniseries
I always like this one. It should've been done in two nights, there just wasn't enough there and it was redundant and dragged out too much, especially when watching it now. Still a solid tale.
That would make a great fan edit. Even a two hour cut.
Left room for a sequel that sadly never was.........
I loved it very much! I’d love to see them build on the story.
I watched this once years ago and I can't remember anything, I just remember being unnerved and chilled
Great review. Love this series.
Great stuff man! Love seeing so much care and attention put into your videos.
Thanks!
Kept trying to find this book. Thanks to this video I know I’ve been searching vain lol. Watched this as a child was terrified.
I agree with you completely
I guess I'd lean towards prequel for this one, but if a sequel idea adds up, then make it happen. I remember seeing some of this one. I remember the final scene too (no spoilers from me!).
I remember watching this when it aired, and being so let down by the ending.
Robbie aka Dale from Walking Dead, mentions in one scene that they could kill Linoge, and it could be "island business", just like whatever Dolores Claiborne did with her husband during the eclipse. Altho I haven't read Dolores Claiborne I think that points to evidence that she has already got off of Little Tull Island
Took me a while to figure out that town manager Robbie played Dale in the walking dead!
Please do more Stephen King stuff!!!
I just watched SOTC and one of the character mentions something about what Delores Clayborne did to her husband or something like that. So she was already a character known for some kind of... mystery at the time of this story.
As lifelong Maine resident watching recently hard a lot of the stuff that is forced in to make it Maine but makes it less if that make sense, probably most notable is literally every character has a downeaster accident
Wow, this brings back memories. Thanks for giving these old hidden gems some attention. You ever thought about doing Nightmare on Elm Street 3-Dream Warriors? In a series of terrible sequels, that one was actually really fun.
I plan on covering all of the Elm Streets.
Loved the video hope to see a Rose Red video!!!
Thank you! And I plan on eventually covering all of King's miniseries.
