This is such a hard arc for this series... Even in the original story...
Rocklee got it... Its not about the other merchant being jealous, but the image of a merchant who parades that he has a woman around, spending lavishly, having her wear expensive clothes... Then go around begging for money because you made a mistake in your deal...
A great part of being a merchant is being aware of information... At this point of the story, Lawrence and Holo became complacent with Holo's abilities and relied on it to heavily... But he forgot to rely on his own skills... A good merchant usually tries to watch the market..

But its less of Lawrence becoming to reliant on Holo's abilities but rather him just being in a rather unfortunate situation. Being either essentially set up of just incredibly unlucky with his timing.
@@Nolo-HLM I could still say its still on him... Since before this, all he had when using Holo's abilities in merchant dealings was success...
Now to clarify... This arc is used as a means to humble and develop both Holo and Lawrence... Since both of them have shortcomings in this situation... The market crash might have been sudden, but if Lawrence didn't let his greed get the better of him and had gathered information beforehand... It would have been possible to minimalize his losses...
This was his behaviour in the early part of the anime with the silver Trenni coins deal... He used both his connections with others and skills before doing the deal...
@@ChaosMind10531 while you're correct on that Lawrence could've tried gathering more info, but even then the cancelation of the north expedition could've happened after he purchased the armor and not beforehand which meant that unless he had some incredible foresight, it was inevitable that he would come out with a loss with that transaction. It's also put up to speculation in the LN's with us not knowing exactly whether the merchant that sold armor to Lawrence was already in with Remerio trading on the whole armor thing. Or maybe he might found out of the crash later on and he decided to make some of the profit back by selling Lawrences debt to Remerio and learning that Lawrence probably wouldn't be able to pay him back.
@@ChaosMind10531 and while he definitely could've minimalized losses if he wasn't so greedy with this transaction, although from Lawrences perspective, the best way to make the most profits from the armor would be to sell it fast so he could sell it at its peak right before the expedition. But since he knew he had time before the expedition would've started, he wasn't in a rush to sell it since he knew he had the time to wait since he was already there but that ended up being his mistake since if he was able to go to Remerio trading immediately, there might've been a chance that the north expedition might've not been canceled yet which could gained Lawrence his profits. Or that either way since the expedition was canceled and Remerio knew beforehand, Lawrence already lost from that moment he bought the armor. Finally, since its pretty inferable that based on Lawrences internal monologue in the novels that the Northern expedition is very common and the way he kept talking about it made it seem like that expedition getting canceled was almost 0 percent so from his perspective, this deal although sounded risky, was actually very profitable and safe risk he could take since he knew that the odds of the northern expedition being canceled was almost none. But sadly that wasn't the case so he suffered a loss and it was heavier due to his greed but at the same time you can't blame him.
20:10 their a unmarried couple sharing a room together. Everyone is assuming their living a life of sin every night and they’re not afraid to hide it by appearing together in public during the day.
Just to put into perspective how much debt he was in with assuming the transactional rate of 34 trenni silver per 1 lumione gold coin. Lawrence had a debt of 1623.5 Trenni silver coins worth of debt. To put into perspective, this is almost 1/8 of the total that Holo helped Lawrence make during the first transaction of the series with the Marten pelts. Also to out into perspective of Lawrences punishment, it was stated that most people forced to row a boat across the sea for the reat of their life wouldn't even last a few years and if you remember he had to do at least 10 years of that. Also for mining, even if you did survive the 10 years of mining, the health consequences you would have would basically cripple your lungs and body for the rest of your life and never be able to live probably if you even make it to 10 years that is.
in the end "because you walking with a woman...", well the idea if you walking with a women all over the town and you are not married, the perception is that Lawrance sending his money on Holo for "you know what", so why they will lend him money if his spend it like Charlie Sheen...
Unmarried Man who has a woman in expensive clothing. He did not appear sincere when he was begging for money since they thought he spend the money on the woman and he was useless.
It's even more important to understand that it's not just the fact that he is frustrated and embarrassed, it's the fact that it was pointed out to him that Holo's presence is partially responsible for him not getting any help even from someone that would have been willing to help him. That right there made him lose it. Because he understood that he should have told Holo to stay away when he tried to beg of money. Again, it's his own fault at the end of the day for forgetting how it would look like having an unmarried woman with him when asking for money, but, it makes sense why he would immediately try to pin the blame solely on her trying to justify the situation. As for why Holo's presence is not helpful here, it's not only because she is not his wife and he drags her around with him everywhere he goes, it's the fact that the people see him as a person that begs for money he would probably spent on a woman.
Consider the fact that Holo is dressed in extremely nice, expensive clothes. Clothes that are as nice as a person can get that isn't a noble. And consider now the fact that the people in the city have no idea what this woman is doing for a living. She isn't an established craftswoman or a trader, nor is she a noblewoman or the wife of a rich trader or noble. Everyone sees her walking around with Lawrence, who is a known merchant, and he denied being married to her. Now, how would you read the situation in this setting? Consider the time period too. The only conclusion the people would reach would be that Holo is a concubine at best, a whore at worst, that Lawrence bought somewhere and decided to have her travel with him for a bit of fun. And as it was revealed in the episode, Lawrence was known to visit brothels when he had started as a merchant and spent all his earnings there, so it is not out of the question for the people to assume this. In any case this is bad for Lawrence not only because he is in a religious center and people take matters of honor and etiquette far more seriously, but also because even those who would be willing to help him because the market crash caused from the cancellation of the crusade is not something anyone could predict, such as the last person he talked to, would now think twice to do so because they would think he is not serious about using the money to pay his debts and restart his business and in turn repay his loans to them, but he just wants money to pay for his whore.
Rude you would say and of course untrue, but how many of us would assume such in real life if we were in a situation like that?

I think it's because they think Lawrence isn't man enough to ask for money alone....instead he's using her to look himself pitiful (look at me, im poor, i have a debt and i can't provide my wife please give me money). Of course, that's not the case, and Holo is just there because she was worried.

The Rowen Merchants Association, of which Lawrence is a member is made up of merchants that all come from the same town as Lawrence. That's why Jacob has known Lawrence since he was a little kid.
The city of Ruvinheigen is just an annual stop along Lawrence's trading route. He goes by there every year to trade as the Northern Expedition is starting. He would know a lot of people there, but it is not his home town.
