In the 1980s the owner Johnnie was tending the till one summer day when I stopped by with my family. We are from Norway and the place was a thrill. I asked Mr Richardson, the elder, how thunder eggs formed? “Atom bombs”he replied. But, I said, the atom bomb was not invented until 1945 and these are ancient. How could there have been an atomic war here in Oregon? His answer: Space aliens. I dropped the subject after that. But I respected him for his amazing rock ranch with copious piles of rocks outdoors sold by the pound, and peacocks strutting around and dazzling my Norwegian kids. Glenn Ostling
We stopped there in November and I bought 4 beautiful Red Brazilian Agates for a little over $24.00. One of them is shaped like a heart. I bought my wife a "backlight" disc to illuminate it. It glows "Cherry Red". Never drive by Richardson's Rock Ranch. Thanks for the tour!
Wow!! so much! A little story from my teen years. I was working on a "dude" ranch taking people out on trails and so forth. The owner gave me a check for a months work and it turned out to be bad. I went back with my boyfriend to try to get cash. The owner was not at home but as we walked out of his office I saw a piece of petrified wood on the mantle and I took it. I still have it. That was sixty years ago and it is the only thing in life I have ever stole. I know the owner had gotten it illegally in Arizona because he bragged about it. He was not a nice person. But, that was the start of my love of rocks, and now live on the Pacific Ocean in Oregon so enjoy hunting for agates.
If you’re still in Oregon, do yourself a favor and check out the lower Nehalem river. Might find a few big agates but certainly will find plenty to collect
Hi Katie do you know if the ranch ship overseas, eg . Australia. Great video as always, i wish we had somwhere like that in Australia, AMAZING. I would be broke all the time.
Thank you for taking us with you. That is an amazing place.. You showed great restraint in not buying more than you could pay for or bring home. ~ Can't wait for your prepping videos for these. Happy New Year ! ! May it bring you FAbulous Sourcing, Finding, & Prepping!! Stay Healthy!
A trip there would be awesome and dangerous at the same time. I got your book for Christmas, Kate. I love it. I'm excited to explore some new spot on the Yellowstone. Thank you for sharing your adventures. ❤😊❤
Wow Kate! You got some amazing material! Those first agates all be were just awesome but the blue lace and the AZ per wood and the stuff you thought was AZ wood but wasn't, was gorgeous too! And yeah, that was going to be an expensive trip to Richardson but how often do you get to go there? So you splurge a little, it's only once a year! Besides, with material that good, who could say no!?! You deserve it! Thanks Kate and family! And Happy New Year! 🎇🎉🥳🍾🥂🎊🎆
5:58 I know you said they had a sign listing that as pyrite agate, but it looks more like Chert to me. Isn't pyrite agate more of a grey color with splotches of white throughout it? 🤔
We live 90 minutes from there. Not sure I can afford to take my wife there. Maybe I will just get her a smaller bucket. It looks like a fun place to visit.
Oh, you spent a lot of money on that trip. I know, I go there at least once a year and am familiar with their pricing. You should have lots of fun with all you found though.

It's really a great place.
Beautiful stuff! I've always wanted to find it instead of buying it! I like getting dirty! Ha!
That was a very cool place to go shopping, thanks for sharing
It’s so amazing you and your husband actually look like so alike.

I wish they still allowed people to dig again. I have 62 lbs of Richardson Thundereggs that I dug up.
I got some of that mookite at the Rock Shed in S.D.!

Happy New Year. We hunted blue thunder eggs in 1997. We had a great rock hunt in field & at Rock Ranch. It was fun.
Wow, it's a lot bigger than I thought! I'll have to go out there the next time the family goes; instead of staying home with the cats.

Awesome!
Sorry I missed it.

#worthit! :)
what kinda budget would ya reccomend people take into consideration, if they're going to the ranch? :)
What kind of prices should one expect? Looking for materials for 1-2” spheres
Hi! It depends on what you are looking for, of course, but I found the prices at Richardson's really reasonable compared to, say, a rock show.
Oh I cannot believe it I know I would leave that place totally broke😂😂😂😂😂at least for a little bit butI would be rich with happy happy joy joy 😂
Exactly!
Oh just buy a bigger saw.😅😅😅
Wow you know little to nothing about agates or minerals
But I learn something new every day!
