Generational poverty happens because people have the mindset of dependency. The welfare system has destroyed the African American family unit which led to the generational povertization of a group of people. If you want your financial freedom, stay away from government aid and make good life decisions. Yes, get married before you have children - children born out of wedlock not only have a higher probability of living in poverty, but they also have life insecurities/issues that will haunt them for the rest of their lives. Live intentionally.

No that woman (or they all as future family) cannot get ahead because the insane health "care" system in the U.S. costs DOUBLE of what it should cost (compared to the other RICH nations). - I currently live in Europe. It would not matter if the boy has a heart problem that could mean very expensive treatments in the future (poor little fella) or the whole family is healthy and never needs the doctor. The man obviously would marry her and be willing to be a good stepdad BUT for the insane costs and risks related to the a child being unfortunate.
And what kind of arrangement is that where she and the kids are worse off after a responsible man marries the mother ?? The very poor gets some help (Medicaid is being hollowed out financially anyway) but if you are lower middle class (5 persons 70k is not _that_ much).
In that case they know they are in for high costs, and who knows what surgery might be necessary in the future.
In Europe the most common form to organize public non-profit unversal healthcare coverage is as follows:
There will not be high bills for the treatment of a child. EVER. They will be covered no matter the insurance status of the parents.
any employed person pays a modest payroll tax, employer must match that (or pays more), and if the person with coverage has dependants they are automatically insured with them. If both parents have insurance to cover the kids, one of them does.
Similar arrangements for farmers, self employed, etc. (only there are estimates about their income and they can usually pay a low minimum but have to pay more after their yearly income is clear).
It does not matter which parents names the kids as "insured with me" to their employer (that is done once, when starting out in a new job, and takes 5 minutes): the populationa is not divided up in "pools" by for-profit actors. Those pools do nothing for better or more cost efficient healthcare, only the profiteers need them.
Those who have an income (employees typically in the range of 500 USD per month or more ) must pay the payroll tax - and have the right to full covereage in exchange for that. Typically there are minijobs (under USD 500 per month) that have very little deductions (no income tax, and also no payroll tax for health coverage, or for retirement).
Dependents means stay at home spouse, stay at home parent or all minors and some adult children. always covered till age 18 or young adults at university / full time professional training get the coverage for free till age 26. After that they get it too, but have to pay a monthly fee. Nothing dramatic compared to the U.S. of course. Could be in the range of 60 - 100 USD. If they can hold a 500 USD job per month than they have it from the job. If a person could have coverage by a family member but they work even a small job - they do owe the payroll tax over 500 USD. That is the solidarity principle. Those that have an income are mandated to pay. But it is modest, so no resistance by the voters.
health care risks / age / gender / family status do not matter. the insurance (payroll tax) for families with a few sick members, does not cost more than the coverage for one healthy single person. Only the income determines the costs (up to the yearly maximum of approx. 2000 USD per person. If a person works several jobs and exceeds that limit they can ask for a return).
To self insure would cost a person 120 per months upwards (but I cannot see it being higher than 200 USD - the need for self insurance is rare). And it also does not matter whether the person is sick. Family does not come into play. A person that has children - even if they are adults now - will always be covered by one of the other provisions (that cost less than "self insurance" or they are for free. For instance people on unemployment benefits, or disability pension).
it is seen as a service to raise children and it is rewarded with those generous provisions. also a nod to the traditional family model where the women stayed at home and found it later difficult to get a job (or would have to finance a second car in rural areas and it is not worth the costs).
A couple where the wife stayed at home, kids are out of the house now - for the service of having raised children his coverage still covers his wife (for life) without extra costs. (As a widow she would also get coverage, and all retired persons have it).
If she stayed home but they never had kids (a very traditional family model or they are very wealthy AND she married right after highschool or university) then they have to pay something (3.4 % of his wage also with a yearly limit. I guess it could go up to 200 USD per month extra, if he has a very good income. If they wanted to avoid those costs the wife would need to get a side hustle that pays at least 500 USD per month.
Insurance is typcially based on having a job (so it is often technically possible to not have insurance, but that almost never happens). Plus there are a lot of extra provisions for people with no income.
for people who do not work (disabled, students, retired, unemployed).
But even a 500 USD per month wage means the mandate to pay into the public non profit system (3,8 % that would be around 19 USD per month, and another 19 from the employer). The mandate also constitutes a RIGHT. To full comprehensive coverage (for the employed and all dependents).
That achieves the universal coverage, which makes things also easy and COST EFFICIENT for doctors and hospitals. the bills go to the public non-profit insurance agency and they pay on time. Doctors do not consult the agency whether or not they can use certain drugs or treatments. The agency gives a framework, and the doctors decise what is used for an individual.
It also means no one has to check whether this or that treatment is covered or not nor to doctors have to be careful to bill the patient what they do not get from the public insurer. There are modest co-pays for drugs (but also bulk prescription if a person needs a lot of packages of the same drug per month. Plus low income people pay no co-pay, the show their card to the pharmcist and get the prescription drug for free).
Either the whole nation gets it (if a doctor says it is needed) or no one. That means new treatments will be greenlighted, there would be considerable political pressure if the agency for some reason would drag their feet while the doctors want to use new drugs and treatments for their patients. But that is a theoretical scenario it does not happen.

They will walk through the details. This really wasn’t an “Ask Dave” question. He needs to figure out the potential coverage and changes to his costs with adding his new family to his medical. He should also find out about other benefits coverages as well that can help. (EAP, health savings account, etc). He needs to reassess everything and what will change with the marriage. Congrats to him and good luck. Hope he sees this comment. ☺️

There’s no such thing as a medical condition “covered in full.” They are going to have to pay their full deductible and then specialists (which sounds like they would be needed) are usually covered anywhere from 50%-80% depending on the plan, possibly covered in full after the deductible is paid. Then there’s drug coverage which brings in its own costs. And all that is after your biweekly premium of anywhere from $200 or more. We truly have a broken healthcare system and ~that’s~ what encourages people not to get married.

I will never be able to look after a special need child, it's difficult, challenging and emotionally taxing. People are too quick to judge the caller's partner when we only hear his own side of the story. She was divorced, meaning she was in a proper relationship, the two decided to have kids and 3x kids were produced. Isn't that why majority of people go into relationships? to start a family? so why is she being burned at the stake for trying to get as much help as she can when society tells her to settle down and start a family like everyone else? If the caller decides to marry her, he knows full well what situation he's going to be in, she's not fooling him into marrying her.
The easy way to see it, if HE can't help provide for everyone, then stay as is, don't marry, and she can continue to live off benefits to support her child. If he wants to provide and the means to do it, then marry her. He's doing a great job in supporting her and the kids. Whatever he chooses, I hope the kids can grow up and achieve great things.
I think we need to be more mindful and understanding that we are in a lucky position than others, to be able to have the knowledge , find resources to make more sound financial decisions. There are many people out there who don't see anything different than to what they've grown up with, lack of resource or never been exposed to another way or direction. It's difficult to break that cycle, especially a poverty cycle.
People only talk about money, but money without humility and kindness is nothing. Money will never bring you joy no matter how much.

Here in Fl we have HealtyKids. The amount depends on the income. The lowest will be $25/ month per child and I believe it can go up to $175 or so. (This is in Fl). But Im pretty sure every state has it because a child can not go without insurance. For once my kids did not qualify for Medicaid, they automatically got accepted for healthy-kids which I did not have to apply for it. He will also need to see how much his job insurance will be. She can also get Obamacare but she will have to do their taxes married filling separate so his income is not counted against her payment.

Yeah, Dave acts like spending 15-20% of gross pay on medical expenses is a walk in the park. This guy can go bankrupt from this child's medical expenses.

Keep it as-is. Insurance these days (even company-provided plans) are hot garbage. BEST CASE scenario you'll be on the hook for tens of thousands for any surgery. Yes, you'll miss out any any tax benefit of marriage, but the risk is CRAZY high to bankrupt you. I'd revisit marriage once the child turns 18. You are planning to spend your life with her and her 3 children that are not yours-- nothing evil in approaching it in a responsible way.

It's easy - and sometimes helpful - to comment coldly on the financials of another person's situation. Sometimes people fall in love, with the other person's children too, and want to be together as a family. I was broke when I met my guy, now I'm earning more than him. I'm glad he didn't write me off because I didn't have a spare penny, and so is he! The medical bills you guys face in the US is nothing short of extortion. That is the crux of this problem.

  • @gymnstmini

80/20 is not "copay" it's "coinsurance". Copay is a fixed number that you pay no matter how much the doctor bills.
For example, I go to the hospital, my ER copay is $125 a day. The doctor can bill $1000 or $20000, it doesnt matter. Whereas someone else can have 20% coinsurance. That means they have to pay $400 if the doctor bills $2000 worth of tests or $1000 if the doctor bills $5000 worth of tests.

I have a son with special needs and over 50k worth of annual expenses. I've lost a job a few times since he's been born and had to get Medicaid temporarily. It covered his medical, but he's goes to therapy and the wait list for therapy is like 12-36 months. So his therapy stopped twice for 6 months in between jobs and insurance coverages. Once I got coverage, got back off Medicaid and put him back in therapy. Cost a pretty penny but it's been well worth it.

I think Dave got his three important terms in insurance mixed up. What he was describing for copay as possibly an 80/20 payment as an example is actually coinsurance. A copay is a fixed amount for certain services. For example, a copay for a regular doctor visit might be $25.00.

  • @geezy4000
    @geezy4000 3 роки тому +5

That is not the correct copay definition. The 70/30 or 80/20 is called the coinsurance. Copay is a set amount you pay for rx, doctor visits, and other services.

Also didn’t mention Contractual write-offs insurance companies have with in-network providers so you are not actually paying 100% while meeting your deductible.

    Buddy.
Your potential Suitor has three kids and doesn't have a job and is living off the government and child support.
Furthermore she wants to continue this lifestyle by not marrying you. And if she does for some reason the anticipation is that you are going to incur all of the cost of health care for the children and not the biological father.
You better make real sure that she's the one before you get yourself into this. I would steer clear personally.

Just because he puts her on his insurance does not mean everything will be covered. Daves religious bs keeps him from making rational decisions like not getting married. Or recommending to see an actual professional for counseling instead of going to a church which is like going to your uncle Bob for help.

I don't know the full picture. Caller's life, not mine.
I've seen something possibly more financially troublesome than what this caller said: Guy marries woman with 3 children and adopts them (I think there were two different fathers). Three months later she files for divorce. No men were paying child support for the children because the mother didn't know (or wouldn't say) who the fathers are. The man she married and divorced was possibly going to have to pay child support for all three children he adopted.
I think this caller wants a family. He better not adopt and not marry in a State which orders lifetime alimony.

I disagree!!!! Entirely. The situation works as it is, and that child's healthcare is covered with no questions or confusion. Why get married? What's the point? It's NOT immoral to expect the government to cover sky-high, life-saving procedures for a child in the face of price-gouging healthcare costs.
