I swear your videos are my favourite throwing videos I've found. I wish I could sit with you in studio for a week and learn from you. Thank you for sharing.
When I started woodturning an old man told me "There''s only two things you need to get right, shape and form, if you get those right you've got something worth looking at". I wish I had your eye for shape and form. Best Wishes, Brendan.
Dan, I have been on a wheel on and off for a few years and I have to say, you make me look like an idiot child but in the best way. Thanks for the instruction! If you're in England, I'll be there in a few months, might run into you. Take care!
You make it look all so easy and effortless...but I know damn well it isn't, lol! I love watching your videos! No pressure or nuffin, but I watch every little move you make with your hands and how you shape the clay, in the hope that I will be able to do a halfway decent job if ever I get to play with a wheel someday. For now, I have to be content with hand building, which I am not a fan of. I love and prefer the perfect symmetry of a turned piece. Wheels are so goddamn expensive though...even second hand! I've been looking! Thank you for sharing your craft with the world. Your efforts are appreciated more than you know.
I took two semesters of wheel throwing and handbuilding at the local community college, but I think I need to come see you for some lessons, as you make it seem so effortless. I used to watch your vids and try to emulate what you did on the wheel at school, but I could never quite make them look as good as yours. Keep up the good work...you have many a fan here in the US, judging by the comments! I may have to send away for one of your pieces one of these days...I really liked you moon jar!
hello from Argentina! We watched your vidio at Betel School in 4th B We loved your job! The children say that you are a genious! Love and hugs from here!!
Really impressive control and skill, one of the best methods I've seen from anyone. Would be great on any advice you have, on how you clean the foot of the piece or underneath
Great work, fun to watch also. Please tell me why you (and other potters) set the ledge, or gallery, before finishing the shape of the pot? Great videos!!!
Love all your videos. I learned so much. Thank you for that. one question: I never see you trim the bottoms which I find most difficult particularly for the larger pots. Is this something you avoid doing for video sake or just skip all together?
Great work. Thanks for sharing. It helps me to do better. I tried to copy your hand mostions but it didn't work. haha Looks so easy the way you do it. I am going to make some of these, smaller version for soup bolwes. I wish that you would show your hand more because I can do the centering fast but it gets uncentered whan I try to open it.
Mutha does all the glazing and she's camera shy. Firing isn't exciting, we're not a hippy pottery where we cut our own wood down and spend 3 days stoking the kiln whilst talking about Japanese Raku and drinking cider ....lol.. Our kilns are electric, it's really dull. I'll do a slideshow of some of the pots though soon if I don't sell them before. Cheers, dan.
(I'm trying to identify your accent. Sheffield? Yorkshire?) I really like your throwing, and getting the gallery out of the way first. Very clever. I'm totally trying this. I'm assuming the bowl is open into the pedestal, and it isn't a bowl sitting on a tall foot that will be trimmed out later?
Someone else asked this, I'm sure. Just wondering what kind of material your batts are made of. They seem absorbent? Great work. Your throwing is efficient and your forms are elegant.
I notice that when you attach your cylinder-shaped lump to the wheel to begin with, you throw it on the long side. I would have attached it on the short side so that I'd start with a cylinder instead of a log. Is there a reason why you do that? Just wondering.
Hello I look at your work regularly on your site, I like what you realized, I am an amateur potter and I turn also. I would like to know where you procured the disks (red) for which you serve as supports for I not located in France. Thank you for your reply
When you throw large amounts of clay do you rarely encounter air pockets as your pulling up? is that because you really spend time wedging the clay beforehand? Somehow I get them a lot, I poke my way out of it haha but it doesn't go nice sometimes.
Christian Sanchez Yes, you do need to wedge a lot, concentrating on the work. Probably you need to hone your wedging skills a bit. Also, there are different styles of wedging; you can try them and find the one you feel more comfortable with. If you do find an air bubble try bursting it with a pin.

how do you dry your pieces before trimming? do you cover them up with plastic? I'm still trying to figure out the best way to store a piece without it getting too dry or wet. thanks!
It's a bit of trial and error really. Let them dry out just about as much as you want then cover with polythene and trim them at your leisure. We have a damp cold room in the Pottery where all the pots go at night so they don't dry out much more. Cheers, Dan.
No need to, if you do it properly and don't let things dry out too much you don't need to score anything. And what is paper slip ? , must be a School thing maybe ? Cheers, Dan.
youdanxxx paper slip is slip mixed with tiny bits of toilet paper that make the slip a bit stronger, it's mostly used for repairing cracks on pieces in the leather hard to bone dry stage so they can with stand the bisque and prevent further cracking. I suppose you could use paper slip to join thingns together but normally regular old slip will do the job
I swear your videos are my favourite throwing videos I've found. I wish I could sit with you in studio for a week and learn from you. Thank you for sharing.
I love how it doesn't even matter what language is spoken everyone in the comments just wants to thank you for your work-work that they won't ever see

Best Wishes, Brendan.
You're too kind Brendan.
Get a wheel and have a go.
Cheers, Dan.
The person you are watching is not doing woodworking he is doing Clay
I had worked that out but the point I was making was about design, not materials.

Another beautiful project.Your hands are large and strong and yet you can make a small knob just appear like it was nothing. TFS!
You make it look all so easy and effortless...but I know damn well it isn't, lol!
I love watching your videos!

Respect. You finished the bowl in a little over 3 mins. That was awesome!!
Beautiful work Dan. Thanks for sharing.
You are bloody amazing. And the speed of your wheel makes me so nervous. But you NAIL IT EVERY TIME 😅
Awesome idea!! I am going to follow this...
Would love to see the finished soup terrain with the blue cobalt slip.

It's quite elegant!

I'm thinking of trying pottery some day.
Beautiful tureen, Dan could I ask to see a video on glazing, firing and then the finished piece ?? Inspirational videos my man !!
Mutha does all the glazing and she's camera shy.
Firing isn't exciting, we're not a hippy pottery where we cut our own wood down and spend 3 days stoking the kiln whilst talking about Japanese Raku and drinking cider ....lol..

I wish I could do pottery. Your amazing at it and watching you do your art work is really awesome and satisfying
70.000 Subscribers! Congrats!
Amazing
That pot is a magestic
Great video.
You've done that before! :)
Someone else asked this, I'm sure. Just wondering what kind of material your batts are made of. They seem absorbent? Great work. Your throwing is efficient and your forms are elegant.
The bats are made from a vinyl/epoxy sheet that we cut to size ourselves, they aren't absorbent at all.
Cheers, Dan
So satisfying.
Excelente. Gracias.
its very beautiful, amazing.

Very beautiful! What are you using for your batt?
Thanks for sharing. : )
How much clay do you leave on the bottom of the pot? Had a go at the shape, but didn't know what you did when you collared in the base. Is it solid?
great job well done !!!!!
Yes, it's elegant!
Molto bravo, complimenti

Wow! Impressive!
that's a gorgeous tureen. how much would something like that sell for in US$?
Thats so cool
Is that a Potter Equipment Co. wheel? I've just restored one and the rim and bowl look very similar.
Neat. How much clay did you begin with?
my daily dose of therapy. why do you need to help get the wheel going with your hand?
+Blunteeezy Electric motors have a different power curve than combustion engines and a huge strain is put on them when first starting. Give it a push can help increase it's life.
Blunteeezy It's because his wheel is very old, as stated in his pottery wheel "showcase" (?).
How much clay did you use for the body of the pot and then for the lid?
Wow, what a beautiful pot! For how much would you sell that for? Do you have an ebay store?
do you put the projects in to the kiln
are you using natural clay
Nice shape.
What was the colour band? Some oxide?
how do you dry your pieces before trimming? do you cover them up with plastic? I'm still trying to figure out the best way to store a piece without it getting too dry or wet. thanks!

like the shape a lot.
Thanks, Dan
thats so cool
Good. Larry
Can you tell me about the trim tools you use? I really need to upgrade.
Where are you guys based out of and how much do you charge for a custom pot?
exelente
Do you use a pugmill?
I was surprised you didn't score the handles and use paper slip.
No need to, if you do it properly and don't let things dry out too much you don't need to score anything.
