I am almost half way trough "Blood of the Old Kings" and I love it so much. While Loran becomes the clasic warrior the fact that she finds the political scheming frustrating and has issues of finding her own way if feels different from other works for me. I did not expected to be intrigued dy Cain, but hin doing odd jobs in order to help his community was so relatable to me. Sorry you did not loved it as much.
@@mariareadsssf I’m glad you’re really enjoying it! I did want it more than I did, but I’m still intrigued enough to keep going in the series. Please let me know what you think of the ending!
I expected the ending to be a sort of compromise between the two sides of the conflict, so I was ok with that. There were 2 small plot holes at the end (Arienne forgetting most of her memories while under Eldred's influence, including part of Cain's apperance, but remembering the room in the pleasure house. The second one I'll have to re-read the last chapter, but I think she questions what happened to the new King, only to later on expect a visit from her). It was a 4.5 read for me rounded down to 4 for Goodreads. A book I'll re-read with pleasure and continue the trillogy for sure.
🍷the problem with published authors writing meta or fanficky is that fanfic you already know the characters, so you don't have to do any of that work. The published authors do. It's interesting you got fanfic vibes from this, I didn't. I just thought everything was kind of flat, and that was it. I also thought it was trying to be clever and meta but it just wasn't. But published fanfic can totally work, if the author does the work. I'm thinking mainly right now of You, Again by Kate Goldbeck. I have the original fic also and they are VERY different. She obviously put in the effort to make it a full story.
For me the fanfic thing is odd in published work because your brain fills in all the gaps for world building, character building, how you predict their actions and responses, etc. It's like being dropped into a tv series halfway through season 2 which doesn't work in traditional published work.
Ooo! Great SciFi recs! 👽 I’m always looking for new authors and titles! 😊
Yay, hope you find something or a new author you enjoy!
I don't read much of sci fi. This video got me interested. I am looking forward to hearing ur thoughts on some of these books.
@@BilliesBookshelf Aw that’s great and awesome to hear! I’m hoping to read these soon.
