Wow, this video really enlightened me to the ideals of passing the ball. Instead of doing an air dribble double tap and missing the open net, I should just hit the ball to my teammate to miss the wide open net. Now that my teammates are missing instead of me, it's no longer my fault that I'm losing, it's my teammates fault. Since losing is no longer my fault, I no longer have stress playing Rocket League. Who knew that passing would open up a stress free way to play this game!
@@thesolargamer9751 i swear nobody expects the pass. Even I have been caught out and been in shock due to the fact my teammate passed and i was just not expecting it
That’s not a pass lmao. It’s a pass if you hit it to your teammate not if you hit it to no one. Part of passing is being aware of where your teammate actually is, not where you think they should be lol
This is so accurate, I've been playing RL for 8 years now and I was wondering what changed. I never noticed that pro players don't really pass anymore, but it makes so much more sense now. I used to pass a lot and I've had to adjust my playstyle because teammates are not ready for passes most of the time. I'm having way less fun in RL since the last 2 years and this explains a lot. Thanks Sunless
Maybe this will be the new meta in the future once again. I forgot which team was passing and destroying people like that... Was it northern gaming or that one team I forgot the name I think it started with an M and le logo was orange.
I've mained a support type role in every game I've played, video or real life. Hitting a dime of a pass to a teammate to put them in a great position has always been way more exciting than sinking the shot. Getting someone else involved in success is almost always more fulfilling than doing it myself. It's been hard adjusting in RL, but man when you get a teammate who's willing to wait a second for a good opportunity, very few things feel better. Thanks for making a video for the "support", pass-first players.
Exactly, I stopped playing a while ago. But I remember managing to find a team where all of us did some very minimal passing and that carried me straight from bronze to gold, even though the entire team's fundamentals were dogshit and we were barely able to hit the ball.
There is no worse feeling than when you hit the crispest pass ever around both defenders in 2v2 that rolls right in front of the net only for your teammate to be back in your net because they rotated fully out when their solo play didn’t work
@@collinsmith6893 i just touched champ. been goin on in diamond for a while from my experience. a lot of champ players i play with know when to go for the ball
Man watching old clips of Lachino makes me feel so nostalgic. Their passing clips look insane and it's always been a fun part of the game. I think the biggest issue people have with passing is the trust they have to put on another stranger, setting aside their ego and pride and putting the fate of a goal in the hands of someone they quite frankly don't trust.
I only play with a guy i close friends with for 25 years. So the trust is there. We are plat3 splitscreeners. We try to pass all the time, but often find it difficult to get speed on the pass, it often doesnt reach the target. I think it has been too long since Sunless sucked if he is gonna claim technical skill isnt a factor when it comes to passing. When the ball is traveling downfield, it is def easier to hit the ball downfield than it is to suddenly hit ball 90° to the left or right, for example.
@crombez65 thx. It would prob he good to try that a bit more. Usually we arent on the same side of the field. And, if i pass backwards, defense will have more time to set up, but i could still def benefit from using it a bit more.
The sad truth of team based games lmao. If they can’t trust strangers and wanna take everything into their own hands why not play single player games 🙄🙄🙄
I am a pass-first player in GC. I had a teammate tell me one time “your play style relies too heavily on your teammates to score.” It was the weirdest way to admit they sucked at shooting I’ve ever seen.
Simple shooting is a giant hole in a hell of a lot of players games. I'm also shocked at how often people just plain old 100% whiff so often. I can understand messing up the shot a little and it not going in, but not even touching the ball routinely? It's baffling. Are we as a player base spending so much time practicing air dribbling that simply making contact with the ball and sending it towards the net is completely neglected?
@@cmdrfunk Well. Think to ANY major sport. What is the very first thing you work on every year in practices? The most basic level stuff. The fundamentals. Most people working on resets, air dribs, double or triple taps, etc assume their mastery of the basics until... they completely whiff the ball and then rage at their team mates about their own mistake. At which point they go full toxic and become unhelpful (or actively play for the other team) or just give up. One of the other important basic skills in games is managing your mental and emotional reactions to a bad situation, a whiff, a missed shot on an open net, the other team dunking on you, whatever it is. In the Rocket League Community (and honestly ANY online gaming community) well... they all fail hard at that basic skill. Unless someone makes you practice those basics you'll find very few people who want to spend a bit of time on the basic skills - everyone instead wants to practice the flashy moves for fame and glory (or at least tiktok viral clips these days). I mean there are basic skills I still suck at. I'm awful at Dribbling. I work on it here and there but I play this game to have a few drinks and some fun with friends not to be "seriously competitive" so perhaps my thinking is just off compared to everyone else.
I grew up with Football, and my fundamentals of the sport is so ingrained to my brain that i feel lost if i dont pass in RL. It's the same sports and the same fundamentals apply here like in Football. I have also noticed that a few years ago when Mech where starting to catch more and more eyes and people were told to go free play to practice their air dribble bumps, their double flip resets and their double flip reset to back board read YY ladder stall across the map throwing knife goals that people forgot what we are playing. Yes being a Messi and going past players and being able to Solo at times is great, but what's even more great is team play and setting people/your team up for success over your own ''greatness'' is so much more satisfying and fun. Now when i pass it feels like people get confused or if im in a passing position and my team mates goes solo and messes up leaving me in a shit spot is somehow my fault. The game has changed and i feel like it's not for the better. The game has become very selfish and toxic because of it...wish we could go back to old School rocket league where We Dem Girlz, Gale Esports, FlipSid3 Tactics ruled the game with extreme team play and passing plays. Now we have 15 year old kids thinking they need to be the one on the field doing everything....it's so lame now
I honestly like passing a lot more, but it does really depend on your teammates being properly ready for it there was one time I played a 6-3 match, I was on the winning team in 3v3, and I assisted almost every goal except 1, fair to say my teammates loved it
did you know most of the time people only reply to someone they know? lol i don't know you but just hoping someone will read my reply and reply pretending to know me as well
The funny thing is that i actually go for a lot of passing plays especially when playing with friends but then i usually end up laughing at them for missing my 6th open net pass. Anytime there is an assist challenge i dread it bc i know even tho I'll only go for passes my tm8s will just mess it up somehow or be gone in Narnia while the ball slowly rolls in front of an open net.
Yea that’s the tough thing. That’s a key aspect to good players too, just being in the right place at the right time. You can make plays by just being where you need to without doing anything crazy complex. As a passer you gotta try to aim for a certain window of opportunity where your teammate can attack. And if your teammate is passing to you, you have to anticipate the pass and sense the opportunity. I think so many people focus way too much on flashy stuff that they just have no game sense
@@oakesclassic6294 i cant tell you how many times i play 3s, dribble down the field to the net, pass it middle, and turn around to see both my tm8s in our back corner 😂. The good thing is when playing with friends we usually play expecting passes but we still suck so its still easy to miss the easiest passes but solo queing your tm8s never trust that you can make it all the way down the field so while youre popping off and getting ready to pass it to them, they have ball cam off looking for that juicy corner boost or theyve already flung through the air trying to take the ball from you and missed.
I do try to pass as often as the situation allows, but it is easy to tunnel vision and miss pass opportunities. I have noticed that my random teammates basically never pass though. Even when both of us are in perfect positioning, and I am in their view, they still go for the solo play instead of the pass. It’s crazy, because passing plays are so much more effective.
Yeah I'm D3 (2v2) and I try to use pass a lot but at my level knowing where the ball is, where my tm8 is and knowing where I'm going at the same time can be hard. For that I think for diamond/champ space awareness is more important than any air dribble mechanic. Also I found the quick chat "Passing" to be super useful. It's probably one of the chats I use the most, both for telling my tm8 to be ready to receive a pass and to ask him to pass. When asking for a pass, it works around 1 time out of 2 which is pretty good considering how stubborn diamonds are (if I don't ask for a pass in quick chat almost no one ever gives me one). Often they just ignore it and go ahead and fail their diamond flick or go for a miserable 50/50 when there's 2 people in the net and it would be so easy to just push it to the side to me. I really think the best thing in the game is to receive a perfect pass from your tm8 from the side and smash it in the net or slow down and go for a little fake/air dribble. When I try to pass often my tm8 is not ready and is too far, or he's in a rush for no reason and goes for a demo and the ball just rolls behind him. Or I lack power and the opponent just cuts it between me and my tm8. I think playing with friends with comms has the most potential for passing plays but I play with almost only lower ranked guys and I'd rather not try with them. Anyway, that was a big rant but you have no idea how grateful I am that Sunless just made a video on that I feel exactly like him. I'm so upset that passing has such a high potential and no one around me sees it (even dudes who have been playing since f*cking 2015 how have you never tried something different in 7 years!!) I hope it's better in champ but I'm not too optimistic.
There are two types of Sunless videos, ones that are basically just random tournaments or challenges that he came up in showers; the other ones are what makes him the greatest RL content creator ever existed, ones that talks about his absolute most accurate observations and facts about the community. This is one of them. I personally think this video should be watched by every single player above plat because I couldn’t agree more with every single sentence he said.THANK YOU Sunless❤
I happened to be playing when this video came out so I stopped watched the video and went back to playing, when I went back to playing I passed a lot more in my next game and I ended up making the other team forfeit. Thanks sunless for the valuable advice
Personally, I come from playing FIFA Pro mode. 11v11. After years of playing that game mode, (and in IRL) you understand the importance of playing alone and sharing the ball. Nobody wants the guy who doesn't pass the ball. Yes, we know that you have all the statistics at 99, and that you are probably God in life. But, it's not about you, it's about the team. It's about the bond, the chemistry, the understanding between us. If we all have fun, we all win.
ngl i hope this brings back the passing meta. Me and my old team used to mostly go for passing plays when we were still a team and most goals were 150kph redirects off of a pass. Its actually crazy how well passes actually work lmao
I always thought they should change the points so that assists give more points than goals so that it makes all the people who want to be "top leaderboard" actually play as a team.
I disagree you can get assists for not even intending to pass the ball, the main thing is that people don't care about the mvp award in a ame that much they like hitting clips which is why you see that kind of solo playstyle
@@kickstart3974 I would say it's the exact opposite. Especially if your team loses the match. Thats where i feel like the whole "mine mine mine" mindset comes from. The majority of people think the amount of points you have correlates to how well you did. Instead of passing for 50 points theyd rather go for the goal to get 100 points so at the end they can say "i did all the work and my teammate did nothing, i have x more points than him." Which they believe means they did nothing wrong all game and they dont need to fix anything
Kinda goofy how once my teammate said I did nothing and im garbage even though I gave him 3 open nets. After losing 3 to 4 he had more points and also more memory loss.
As a playmaker type RL player (passing and good ball control, but not the best shooter) I hope more people realize passing is such a good tactic in the game. The amount of times I make a huge passing play and my team is following me for their solo turn is mind blowing, just stay back and read the play and I will feed you the ball. I feel like a lot of folks who play actual sports can play RL better and know how to have game sense. When you have gamers who do not play a lot of team sports jump into a TEAM game like RL it's hard for them to understand that they do not have to be the guy touching the ball the whole game
I'm 100% in agreeance that players who have some background in an actual team sport have a massive advantage over people who just like soccar. If someone feeds me a dime pass or is watching me set up a play and positioning for the pass, I immediately assume they played team sports in the past, because the amount of selfish players I run into sub champ is mind boggling.
as someone who played soccer as a kid you are correct. the problem is these kids dont play sports and they dont have real life adults to coach their behavior when they are on rocket league
@@Chilipotamus My one friend downloaded rocket league recently and already plays well because his whole life is playing sports. If you understand how sports are played you can position well in RL and understand it. A lot of gamers who play this game and try to get better at it don't look at how closely this game is a sport on a field.
@@Ziggz47 there's a reason people can and do make videos about getting to GC with little to no mechs. Proper game sense and positioning will get you much much further than backboard flick double taps, but it's also difficult to train game sense on your own. For most players, replay review is key to understand better rotations
Gotta love 2s where instead of passing the ball to me waiting my teammate is in the corner trying to drive the ball through 2 defenders into the goal... in diamond.
Wow after watching this video, I can confirm these tips are an absolute game changer! Now instead of missing the open net, I can PASS the ball so my teammate can miss the open net for me!
wow it would be amazing if my teamates who are scared if even touching the ball could listen to this, I CANT TELL YOU HOW MANY TIMES I PASSED TO THE AND THEY TURNED AROUND AND WENT TO SLEEP IN THE GOAL
It's a dog biting his own tail. A mind game if you wish. They don't expect you to pass the ball, cause 99% of the players don't pass the ball. If the first time you do so they fail to contact, that's when the second issue comes. Should they expect you to pass the ball again, when most of the people, once they pass and their teammates just back up, would try to do the thing on their own? When you experience this kind of situations again and again, it starts to feel like ''I'm mad IDGAF'' mood. So eveyone is angry and avaricious, it's just them and the ball.
Been playing for years and always tended to play the role of support mostly because my mechanics weren't nearly as good as my friends who started playing before me. As my game sense and positioning got better and I could control myself better in the air I actually found it more of a challenge to put the ball in play for my friends to execute a shot and got a kick when it worked. To this day when I play, I play to pass and create buttery smooth quick plays that ultimately has the team getting amped up and vibing without one another instead of 2 of the 3 getting frustrated because the most mechanical of the team is trying to carry the whole team every game and then getting annoyed when their aerial razzle dazzle is so badly telegraphed Stevie Wonder could see the air dribble coming a mile away
when I first started playing this game I got lucky and got placed in plat in my duos. at first I would get destroyed, but after I dropped down a while later, I really learned that I can rely on my teammate. this mindset made all the difference in getting better, and made the game much more fun.
I've played for a month, climbed from Gold 1 to Plat 1 in 2 days because I just don't go for weak, ineffective hits. Which leads to me basically passing every so often. It's weird seeing longtime players not understand it hahaha, when I'm already at the door of diamond after not very long.
I think we’re all part of the problem. I know I don’t pass enough when not playing but when I am I feel I shouldn’t bc of my teammates. Just gotta fix my mindset like many others.
if you are bellow gc2-gc3 and solo queuing i feel like you have the right mindset. gc2-3 looks like the rank at which players start to actually let their ego aside and use their brain. before that, passing seems to backfire more than it works from experience
@@awskarre yes yes yes. I pass quite a bit and I love going for solo plays too but I try not to force it. If it's a corner ball my usual instinct is to see if i can set myself up and if i can't i hit it for a pass and all the time my teammate is out of position and it gets me tilted because we lose possession
My favorite position in-game, is fighting in corners for centering passes. I also love those light touches that leave everybody flying through the field...
Watching that old montage from Squishy, Torment, and Lachinio is actually insane because if they tried to do those exact plays now it would probably be a goal 90% of the time above 1500
that old montage at the end of this video was so cool. it's still Rocket League, it's still high level gameplay, but much more "basic". no unnecessary flashy stuff, just good team synergy and accurate shots. feels like a completely different game compared to today's RLCS. i would love to watch some tournament in this style, kinda like having certain mechanics completely banned.
I used to pass all the time when I was a lower rank (plat-diamond). My teammates usually weren’t ready or expecting it, but when it worked out they’d get super hyped and it felt great. Moving into the high champ range, I usually just get flamed if I try to pass in 2v2. Teammates expect you to solo play and 100% are on autopilot until your turn going at the opposing net is finished
Lol that's so true that a pass from a random teammate just bring so much joy. I have 4,000 hours and I can recall several recent passes from the last week that I got, it's just so irregular but so fun when someone purposefully tries to give you the ball, which sounds crazy now that I write it out. Thanks for making this video.
I agree with you. I was stuck in dm1 for a long time but I found a friend to play with and in three days I was able to reach ch1 you just need someone who understanding u
Im diamond 1 in 2s and up to this point i never even considered that my tm8 or myself could just pass the ball… i also realised just how boring it really is to watch your tm8 fail their solo play and i think that is because we all all mostly just used to it. I guess we all just gotta start passing before it becomes meta. Ty for the video 😂
Im currently in low Diamond 2 and the amount of times my teammate tries a free style aerial or ceiling shot and gets no where near goal is insane. Literally no one passes
So true and it's why I hate playing doubles, half the matches your teammate expects you to take turns doing 1vs2 attempts while one is sitting in the back field. In 3s it is at least somewhat expected of you to rotate but you still get the odd player trying to solo, doing wonky off the wall airdribbels that end up being countered into our goal... It's funny the best modes for passing plays are dropshot, snowday, but even hoops and rumble. Good passing plays in those modes just work well and I think most people have figured that out.
"you can do things that aren't optimal and still have alot of fun" this line resonates with me so hard and for this reason. I play RL on Keys and I only use the Merc never used a octane for a s long as ive had this game (since 2015) and lets say i get flamed ALOT when i play RL in casual (yes its casual lol) and ranked b/c people immediately think im a bad player b/c i always try to pass and have fun rather than win in most if not all of my games and every time I get flamed I think how is this fun for you to try your ass off in every match you play and get super pissy when I miss 1 save? so to anyone who trash talked me or left a match early due to a one bad play. Chill out! try goofing around a bit go for dumb plays and I swear you will have so much more fun even if you are losing. (also i got do D3 in 2s playing like this so it kinda works lol.)
I don't necessarily buy that solo plays in 2's is optimal for non-pro's since non-pro's will mess up a complicated solo play far more often than a pro.
you've inspired me to pass more. i always think about how good passing would be and then i always forget to do it in game. well not always, but a lot of the time. when my teammate goes for a passing play instead of the shot, i sometimes get caught off guard and mess up the play, and then i think "if i was ready for that it could have been a really good play that probably would’ve resulted in a goal"
Personally, the reason I don’t go into the position to receive a pass from my teammate is because even if they try to pass, it might not be a good pass, or I might get beaten to the ball by the opposition, and so it feels like over committing. I feel like a lot of players stay further back as the second man not just to wait for their turn to solo play, but also to try to avoid over committing and giving away a free goal. (In champ 1)
exactly, i dont trust myself to catch the ball, and i dont trust my teammate to pass it well. Sure, it might happen sometimes, but the times either of us misses, then it's open net for other team... and I think people just wanna play as risk free as possible, cause usually it lets you stay in a higher rank in my experience
@@MrBsehratmaannking I agree in some way but trying to play to compensate for your teammate flaws just make you create bad habit in the end. People care so much about there rank that they forget that the real progression in this game is the way you play !!! Not the way you always stay back to keep your rank. You will win more game at a certain rank sure, but the moment you're playing with a better teammate, they will hate you because you're never in position to keep the momentum going. Its about playing the position you're in. First guy challenge the ball no matter what (win or lose), the second guy staying close to the first guy to beat the opposite player at the 50/50, the third only enter the play if he's not contest to the ball. That is why in professionnal sport you see a player dominating at a certain level all by themself but the moment he step to the next level, he become useless because he never learn to play the right way. Like in rocket league, players at high diamond low champ trying to make sick flip reset goal but the moment they step into GC they became useless because people wont let them even set up a flip reset. If your goal is to make it to GC, sure you can do it just by being safe and boring. If you want to make it to the next level, you need to use your teammate and the better way to do it is to be in position for a pass. If he miss a open pass, you cant blame yourself for not being back.
You’ll never get better as well as other players that do the same if you don’t put yourself in uncomfortable positions it’s the only way you learn and figure out whats the better option in future games even in the current game If you position yourself right you can beat your opponent to the ball but if you know you’re going to be beat force your opponent to make a bad touch because a lot of the time players especially Diamond to low Champ from my experience panic and don’t get the best touch if you overcommit you’re most likely going to get scored on but if you just show like you’re about to challenge by playing up and then turn around whenever your opponent tries to clear it you most of the time have a free ball to take back to your half set up a better opportunity for you and your teammate(s) and go from there. I know for me it’s just as sunless said we’re not going to make it pro a lot of us know that 😂 but we still like to play at a high fast pace level, if 7 or 8 out of 10 games our teammates play back it doesn’t make the game fun and the FF’s come out and everyone just ends up stuck or going down ranks. If you want to play it safe just stick to casual less stressful more carefree 🤷🏽♂️
Thx for this video Sunless !!! I hope it open some people eyes !! I feel this is the biggest reason im not having fun in the game for the last 2 years. Its all about the sick solo play and hard mechanic. How to you expect to be consistent at the game by doing hard mechanic if you're not even playing the game for 6 hours a day. I guess people that have played real life team sport understand that you can't do it all by yourself.
There is something about a clean pass and score that is so satisfying. I’m not a strong 1s player so I always look for the pass. And when scored we always go nuts in coms.
I watched this video even though I already do passing plays and love them.. just wish at times more people had that mindset just like you said. I'm stuck in C1/C2 and find this problem on EU and US-East
I'm champ 2 and can say that this also happens on the US-West side as well. Which also brings me to the point of only playing with a party since you can build chemistry.
C2 is such a mixed bag. Most games, you can tell people are just playing solo, but I've found that once I show that I can and will make good passes, a lot of folks seem to get the message and start getting in proper position to actually play the pass.
Litterally just a had a tm8 today who refused to pass, would only do 1v2s. I was literally left either recovering his horrible misses or going back on defense. Was a misserable time and yeah we didnt win.
IMO as a coach/player with thousands of hours on the game I believe that a good balance of passing/solo plays or bumping are very impactful if done so correctly. You definitely don't want to be on one end or the other though. If your team only passes the ball, your opponents should adapt and start cutting off those passes, making it dangerous in 2v2. Now if its a 2v1 in favor of your team I think that either a passing play or someone takes posession and the other goes for demo is the best course of action. If you try to pass in 2v2 and it fails, you have no support and that leads to chances for your opponents to take possesion and score. but really- Whos gonna actually pass in ranked ?? XD
My buddy who is a former rlcs champion got me into this game. He taught me passing when I was at 0 hours and I have continued to use it heavily. Every rank below c3 is just bad at passing. Giving and receiving. As you move up from there it becomes a lot more fun because people are watching the play develop and understand where to be to receive a pass. I think this hard barrier to seeing passing is part of why they don't happen. People don't experience passes until they are seasoned veterans of the game now. Their minds aren't malleable enough, so it never gets incorporated after that.
Worked for me. I win more by assisting my teammates than trying to do it myself. Hence when I have the chance to triple musty ceiling psycho pinch reset, i tend to fuck it up on the "double jump" part.
I’ve always been a pass first player because I like to win and my duo is more mechanical then me. After watching this video I feel like I shouldn’t pass anymore
Its amazing to see the visual confusion when I pass to teammates in 3v3 in Diamond. Its takes like 3 seconds for them to process what just happened. Thankfully no opponent positions themselves to intercept a pass so they usually have time to snap out of it.
I started passing more and noticed how many seemingly impossible goals were basically open nets, also give your teammate more trust and they will also start passing more and overall trusting more. Also love to JZR for still making cool passing plays
Sometimes when my teammates are being toxic I start passing the ball. It confuses the opposing team, but especially my teammates. Its the ultimate revenge.
I think the main reason why people don't pass is they just don't think about it. From bronze to like diamond, everybody just tries to hit the ball towards the opponent's net. And by the time you're in champ, it's engrained. It's pretty hard to remove as a habit.
THIS! This is is about 75% of my frustration with this game and the other 25% is toxic people. This game is so much fun when you find someone that you play well with. Thank you for making this video
The funny part about it is that often your teammates will be so cut off guard by your past that they will screw it up. I sometimes start my ranked games by just typing"I pass" in chat
brooo now i understand why my teammates are always right behind me when im trying to pass to center for them, wish more people knew about passing and how op it is
This man made me realise the only games that I truly remember are the ones where I passed the ball and my teammate did the same. Especially that one stupidly goofy triple-pass in rumble
4:22 THIS! This is one of my biggest pet peeves in RL. Look, hypothetical future teammate, I don't need you shadowing right behind me as I take the ball up the side of the field. I'm already on this particular piece of grass - we don't need two of us here. Especially in 2v2. Better idea: spread out. It results in us taking up more of the field. It gives us a larger presence. It forces the defense to have to back up and spread out to cover multiple attack angles. And it gives me the opportunity to pass to the center to set you up for the goal.
I find my reason for not passing (often) is less my lack of trust in a tm8 and more simply my inability to locate my tm8 in time and out the ball where they need it. Something I’ve been trying to work on
Another thing to work on is do not immediately lose trust in your teammate if they miss a pass or two. Passing is so foreign to a lot of players, especially those below GC level, so sometimes you need to let your teammate realize what's going on and adjust in kind. I sit around C2 on my good days, and sometimes it takes a minute or two for your teammates to figure it out, but once they realize you're looking to dish the pass, you can pull off some absolutely absurd plays.
It makes me happy to know that my mate (that had barely any knowledge of proper placement before we took everything a tiny bit more seriously) and I reached diamond 2 in 2's by having proper communication, rotation and passing. There's hiccups here and there but we usually get the job done. (we started at plat 1 last season and at the start of this season after placements we were put into D1 from the start) I avoid random queue for the sole reason that there's no teamplay, it's all just watching everyone go for the ball, see if they score their air-dribble or double-tap.
I just started playing Rocket League just last month, and my mindset to get better at the game was to “Be as helpful as possible” ingame while training my own individual skills. Passing the ball or “setting” the ball has just been part of my playstyle, while I’ve noticed every single player ballhogs or camps goal. I thought it was just a rank thing. I’ve got a friend slightly better than me(not for long), and our synergy when I play like this is unparalleled
Just started playing rocket league and when I don't play with friends, and solo queue, I quickly realised how non team based this game is, I thought playing lots of fifa and watching lots of football would translate a little bit but nah.
Honestly on a serious note, all the reasons you described of it just being players going for solo plays all the time is the reason I stopped playing. It’s just so boring
I play 2s with a friend, we're both low tier platinum players - we can't fly, can't control our cars in the air, we suck. But we pass. We have great teamwork plays that help us outshine the enemy players, and as result we're on the cusp of diamond. We get nervous when people queue into us and show that they can air roll and air dribble and hit shots off the wall (I can't do that). But then we make passing plays and it's how we win. Keep the single play mentality alive, it helps me keep an edge over opponents!
Sunless I love this video. It's important to note passing is also the most likely optimal strategy as well though, not just more fun. If 50% of the time you have the ball on their side and you pass the ball to a tm8 rather than go for a shot, the enemy will be forced to give you more space and cut off the pass space which actually make your random solo play much stronger and also makes your passes stronger. This is a NA issue, this is why no matter how good Daniel is, if he's on SSG, if he's on V1, it's incredibly slow paced and weak pressured compared to anything the top EU teams offer. Because when he gets the ball 99.9999% of the time he tries to solo play past 2 or 3 ppl and expects his missed shot that lands in a 50 for his tm8s to be able to react and capitalize on. I hope this trend ends soon it's been getting worse for the past 2 years or so.
Seems pretty obvious to me that every time a pro team embraces passing and teamplay they win a tournament. That's why it was so awesome to see Zen not trying to score every single play. I just don't fully agree that it's exclusively an NA problem I think it's just worse on NA. The top 3 teams in NA right now are all passing the ball constantly and it's literally the only thing that really sets them apart from the rest of the region. Only difference in EU is theres like 6 or 8 teams that pass the ball and everyone challenges more aggressively(which seems like its obvious should be the optimal play in any 3v3 regardless of rank or region.)
@@15kalas15 Obvious to you. But not to others. Some of that fair. But if you que EU C3 knows how to pass. Do you know of any EU teams that fail to even try to pass the ball around and take the same level of solo possession into a 50 that the non 3 NA teams your mentioning do? NA C3 or even NA GC2 still confidently thinks passing is a high risk play :'( Also a lot of NA will try to say "well this is optimal play in 3s not 2's" the reality is, it's optimal play in any game mode that has a teammate.
I love this video; well done! Ever since I was a kid, I always played team games with a pass first mentality. You're right, passing plays are the best.
Wow sunless really just summed up all my incoherent RL rants that I deliver to myself and the empty can of gamer fuel next to my PC in one beautifully worded video. 👏👏👏
Lol I’m not selfish but I know that the instant I touch the ball my teamate is on my ass trying to steal it. Like I’ll pass if you wait in the freakin middle and be ready for it. I’m over here passing to a teamate that decided it takes 2 players to make a layup.
Man oh man Sunless Khan is back. Keep making videos like this my guy. It is soo much fun and satisfying to watch even though I know I'm still not gonna pass xD
I pass as often as I can, it’s actually my default to pass the ball and right away go blow up a defender. It is very frustrating having your teammates just ride your ass waiting for your solo play to fail though, which happens more often than not. It’s hard to pass when your teammate is just following your exact trail for no reason lol
if there is every a RL video that i feel it is this. so many times im centering and passing the ball whilst my teammates decide to race back and sit on the goal line ready to make a save and take their turn at a solo play.

But I remember managing to find a team where all of us did some very minimal passing and that carried me straight from bronze to gold, even though the entire team's fundamentals were dogshit and we were barely able to hit the ball.
you aren’t a support player. you’re a PLAYMAKER
Love to all my fellow Jason Kidds of RL! 1 goal and 4 assists the winning recipe 😂
There is no worse feeling than when you hit the crispest pass ever around both defenders in 2v2 that rolls right in front of the net only for your teammate to be back in your net because they rotated fully out when their solo play didn’t work

If players actually practiced shooting for half an hour a week instead of air dribbling for 100 hours a month I might trust their shooting.
@@GoofRebelMusic bruh so pass backwards..
I had a teammate tell me one time “your play style relies too heavily on your teammates to score.”
It was the weirdest way to admit they sucked at shooting I’ve ever seen.
thats insane lmao these people have never played a real sport
True, they never played a real sport. They probably only played soccer or women’s basketball
@@cmdrfunk I don't think that is as big an issue for a gc level player though

I'm so upset that passing has such a high potential and no one around me sees it (even dudes who have been playing since f*cking 2015 how have you never tried something different in 7 years!!) I hope it's better in champ but I'm not too optimistic.

ngl i hope this brings back the passing meta.
Omega Strikers gives passes and assists the same amount of points which is really rewarding imo
@@ChaseTrent another absolutely fabulous idea
This just made me think about in soccer when you had to do drills where you had to pass 3 times before you can shoot
@@15kalas15 You see their behavior on other games that require teamwork too like Overwatch or Objective based game modes in shooters.

I don't know what you are talking about? My teammates love passing... They willingly put the ball on a plate every touch so our opponents can score!
To this day when I play, I play to pass and create buttery smooth quick plays that ultimately has the team getting amped up and vibing without one another instead of 2 of the 3 getting frustrated because the most mechanical of the team is trying to carry the whole team every game and then getting annoyed when their aerial razzle dazzle is so badly telegraphed Stevie Wonder could see the air dribble coming a mile away
number one reason i don't pass never being near the ball because i am typically just chilling in a rule 1 in the goal
There should be a gamemode in which in order to score every player from your team must touch the ball in the past 7 seconds or something

A good pass is so much easier on than a full solo play. Even if you have teammates failing solo plays, they could still execute passing plays.
if you are bellow gc2-gc3 and solo queuing i feel like you have the right mindset. gc2-3 looks like the rank at which players start to actually let their ego aside and use their brain. before that, passing seems to backfire more than it works from experience
@@awskarre yes yes yes. I pass quite a bit and I love going for solo plays too but I try not to force it.

Chill out! try goofing around a bit go for dumb plays and I swear you will have so much more fun even if you are losing.
I lack the vision, awareness and ball control to do this at gold unfortunately.
I think what Sunless is trying to say is that it's why we suck at Rocket League.
Bro, passing in doubles is clutch. As a Plat it’s almost a free goal if you can make decent contact
Sunless is the best rl UA-camr of all time with out a second thought
Thx for this video Sunless !!! I hope it open some people eyes !! I feel this is the biggest reason im not having fun in the game for the last 2 years. Its all about the sick solo play and hard mechanic. How to you expect to be consistent at the game by doing hard mechanic if you're not even playing the game for 6 hours a day. I guess people that have played real life team sport understand that you can't do it all by yourself.
too bad we're a minority
that’s why zen is an incredible player. he always knows where his teammates are and will always find an opening for a pass
Which also brings me to the point of only playing with a party since you can build chemistry.
i say we run a 3s👀
C2 is such a mixed bag. Most games, you can tell people are just playing solo, but I've found that once I show that I can and will make good passes, a lot of folks seem to get the message and start getting in proper position to actually play the pass.
@@Chilipotamus That as well
Litterally just a had a tm8 today who refused to pass, would only do 1v2s.
We could be Gc by now but you playin 😅
Worked for me. I win more by assisting my teammates than trying to do it myself. Hence when I have the chance to triple musty ceiling psycho pinch reset, i tend to fuck it up on the "double jump" part.
I’ve always been a pass first player because I like to win and my duo is more mechanical then me. After watching this video I feel like I shouldn’t pass anymore
‘“Ha, you think I pass the ball, you fool”’
What a Legend 🤣🤣🤣
Passing has always been my favorite play, a solid passing play looks so much cooler than multiple resets of mustys
I had so much fun seeing this video. "ON THE OTHER HAND"😂😂😂
i pass so much but no one hits them, or they think im making a solo play and just wait in mid or net and abandon me to fail
"you know.. on the other hand" had me laughing my ass off xD
Sometimes when my teammates are being toxic I start passing the ball. It confuses the opposing team, but especially my teammates. Its the ultimate revenge.
The fact that sunless probably made this video to diss his tm8s is so funny
I think the main reason why people don't pass is they just don't think about it. From bronze to like diamond, everybody just tries to hit the ball towards the opponent's net. And by the time you're in champ, it's engrained. It's pretty hard to remove as a habit.
interesting theory
THIS! This is is about 75% of my frustration with this game and the other 25% is toxic people. This game is so much fun when you find someone that you play well with. Thank you for making this video
The funny part about it is that often your teammates will be so cut off guard by your past that they will screw it up. I sometimes start my ranked games by just typing"I pass" in chat
brooo now i understand why my teammates are always right behind me when im trying to pass to center for them, wish more people knew about passing and how op it is
The way he dissed all potential pros by telling them they basically aren’t good enough 🤣
I can’t tell you how bad it feels when someone gives you a good pass and you mess it up cuz your not used to it
This man made me realise the only games that I truly remember are the ones where I passed the ball and my teammate did the same.
I’ve figured it out and it’s because everyone started watching Bluelock
Wow sunless! Thanks for another reminder of how I’m inevitably inevitable to being forever ass at this game.
Just started playing rocket league and when I don't play with friends, and solo queue, I quickly realised how non team based this game is, I thought playing lots of fifa and watching lots of football would translate a little bit but nah.
Sunless: „you will never be a pro“
Zen watching this: „ok, time to uninstall then“
Honestly on a serious note, all the reasons you described of it just being players going for solo plays all the time is the reason I stopped playing.
Good to see that no matter how long sunless makes videos they're still consistent 😂 this video is ending was screaming through my head the whole time
Sunless I love this video.
NA C3 or even NA GC2 still confidently thinks passing is a high risk play :'(
Also a lot of NA will try to say "well this is optimal play in 3s not 2's" the reality is, it's optimal play in any game mode that has a teammate.
This litteraly went from a meme video to a motivational speech that I'll never forget.
