A soldier tries to explain to a little girl that he has killed her parents. My, my Kuiama, she came in the morning She smiled but the tears on her little face Showed the pain that had been in that far-off place So sad, treated so bad My, my Kuiama, don't break your heart tryin' To say how your ma and your pa passed away And they left you to wander the ruin and decay Real mean, that bullet machine See here Kuiama, now ten thousand miles Is a long, long way and you're here today And you won't go back so you might say "Hello, how do you do?" Kuia, stop your cryin', there's no bombs a-fallin' No horsemen in the night a-ridin' Through your dreams and tearing at your life Baby, goodnight No more silver rain will hit your ground And no more guns will sound No more life be drowned No more trenches where the soldiers lie And no more people die Beneath that big black sky Wake up, Kuiama, I got somethin' to tell you It's just that I mean, well, that is to say That I'm trying to explain but I'll start again For you, I must be true Kuia, in this country, they got rules with no reason They teach you to kill and they send you away With your gun in your hand, you pick up your pay So cool, that no mercy tool Kuia, please believe me, I just couldn't help myself I wanted to run but they gave me a gun And they told me the duty I owed to my fatherland I made my stand Kuia, I just shot them, I just blew their heads open And I heard them scream in their agony Kuiama, she waits there for me True blue, you saw it through

Somehow Amazon Music put the 2nd ELO Album under "ELO Part 2" the band, so I had never heard this song until I found the OLE ELO record in our rental cabin that we went to after the VetsAid 2023 show with ELO. Hearing this after seeing ELO for the first time was just an amazing experience.
This song belongs to the 2nd LP of the ELO, titled simply ELO II. The complete list of that LP is: 1- in Old England Town (Boogie No 2) 2- Momma 3- Roll Over Beethoven 4- From the Sun to the World (Boogie No 1) 5- Kuiama
I haven't heard this in a long time! I was a total ELO fanatic in the late 70s, and I even played their second album- which this song is from- quite a lot at the time. The edit here is pretty bad ( the original song is about 11 minutes), but it's nice to see this early material played (almost) live!
Do you happen to have the ELO performance from February 18, 1977? that legendary performance in which Jeff Lynne was dressed in blue performing without sunglasses? ELO were the hosts for the episode btw
One of my favourite ELO songs ever, and butchered within an inch of its life to fit an incompatible format. Sad, but I'm still glad and grateful to see this snippet.
My Grandfather use to say to me..."You better not be in that back seat playing with your jigglypuffs!" No Grandfather, I'm staring aimlessly and inefficiently out the window.
I think they started as 100% live but at some point gave in and started using backing tracks if not full on lip syncing for whatever reason. A good example is there are two versions of Blondie singing Heart of Glass, one is definitely live (she gives an anti-nuclear speech in the middle) and the other is very obviously lip synced and sounds completely different from the live version.
This is vintage, real ELO as a band. This is their true sound before Disco contaminated their songs. BTW, where was the lead guitar??? We hear it but its not on stage. Backstage? I doubt that in those times they were using prerecorded parts.
This appearance of the ELO on TV is not live... The music is playback, and the voices are live... This was very normal at that time and the ELO did it this way many times... playback music and live voices singing over the pre-recorded music... Isn't it clear that the music is an edited version of the original studio recording? Isn't it noticeable that you don't see everything you need to have when playing live, such as microphones on the drums, monitors and wiring that is needed when playing live? There are no monitors, there are no microphones in the amps, etc., etc. friends is clearly a playback performance and the ELO did this many times on television.. There is no need to despair about that.
@@classicrockfan8034 yes, indeed... if you read my message from 6 months ago carefully, you will see that it says yes, in this video THE VOICE IS LIVE, but the music is play back.. greetings..

ELO always plays live on all tours.. A performance on TV is different, and they did not always play live, as in this case the music is playback and the voice is live... Lynne sings over the pre-recorded music... and of course he also played live on tours after 1977. On the 1978 tour they simply used backing tapes to complement what the group DID PLAY LIVE.. Those support tapes were only from the orchestra and choir section and some supporting voices.. the rest of the music was live... Lynne's guitar was live... Bevan's drums were live... Kelly's bass was live Tandy's keyboards were live (except those orchestral sections and choruses and vocoder which were pre-recorded support tapes) Mik's violin, Hugh and Melvin's chellos were live added to those pre-recorded support tapes of the orchestral section already mentioned) Also on the 1978 tour they had an 8th live member who was the monitor technician Jake Commander, who from his position behind the monitor console supported the group by playing 2nd guitar and backing vocals.. It's not a secret or anything unknown, there are many bootlegs from the 1978 tour and the 1981-82 tour that you can hear perfectly, it's all live
Wow. Definitely the oldest version of the band I've ever seen. I only recognize Mike Edwards on cello...the other 2 string players I don't recognize. Plus Mike Albuquerque on bass. Wow. 😮

You need to hear this song in it’s full length version to understand why this performance isn’t the best: The original album version is around 11 minutes long and is an anti-war song from the point of view of a soldier who was having to explain to his girl what he was going through.
early ELO much heavier and better than the 'pop' ELO....the band peaked with the album 'Face The Music' before all the pop stuff.... a new world record / out of the blue....were decent.... discovery, time, secret messages ....OK....

Check it out on UA-cam by searching for "ELO - Laredo Tornado Live 1974 Stereo Remaster", lol! I think it's a Rockpalast concert, but I'm not sure about that. (I'll try to put the link here. If that's not possible, you can search for it by that title) and then...tell me what you think please... hahahaha! I think Kelly was trying to transform into Jeff Lynne day by day...he even continues touring with the same songs and under the name E.L.O Part II...🤔🤨🧐😆😆😆! (Sounds like a movie plot: (should be read in a deep and suspenseful voice...): "A man who lives forever under the shadow of a famous genius... the eternal "one step from glory"... the story of a friendship turned obsession, a rivalry as raw as real life...the drama of a "non-solo" musician... The story of an impossible dream...From the creator of "please, this is just my opinion, do not kill me" and "my apologies, don't want to be intrusive with my comment", coming soon on Netflix "I SHOULD BE YOU", this summer the perm will rule the world..." 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Sorry, Kelly's talented, he has a very good voice and I find him charming, but I can't help feeling that he was always in the shadow of a genius, I don't know why I have this feeling...first was the perm, later the same platform shoes that Jeff used to wear, the blue clothes like Jeff at the grammys... most likely it was Jeff himself or the manager who suggested those makeovers but knowing the rivalry that Kelly showed at the end... my paranoia seems so much funny to me 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 My respects to him, always!🙌🙌🙌💖💖💖
Well... the real thing is that Kelly contributed a lot to the band and this is what's important.
Greetings from Spain!!!! (Seriously, I loved your comment, hahahaha). Have a beautiful summer!!!!🛸🚀🎶🎵!!!!
Here you are: ua-cam.com/video/ruXFlcdnKjg/v-deo.html
I forgot: to be fair I have to say that except for Mik EVERYONE in E.L.O got a perm sooner or later...(as the dad and kids of the Brady Bunch, hahahaha)
Mike sounds better, more grittier than Kelly's .
Amazing one of my favorite elo songs .
never heard this one and I think I am hooked
The full thing is beautiful and terrifying
never heard this live... superb
When we were still allowed to see his eyes. This is old indeed.
That’s well-put. We’re not allowed to see his eyes
I always like Mike’s backing vocals.
George Harrison , Tom Petty, Joe Walsh and so many other music Legends: "Jeff Lynne is the best overall Musician ever"!
Only Petty said that.
Jeff Lynne is the best of the best.
I love this. Clearly a sing-back recording. However at least the vocals was real. Great historical piece 🤙🎸
INCREIBLE IMPREIONANTE MUCHISIMAS GRACIAS
Thank you so much for this!!
This is PHENOMENAL!!!
Phenomenal band 🙏😊👍❤️
On the Deluxe Edition of ELO2, the original instrumental backing track used for this performance is included as a bonus track.
One of my early ELO favorites! Shorter than the original, but man, Jeff is amazing, even if the performance of the band is not live. In the 70-s when I became addicted to Jeff I would have given up a kidney to see this. THANKS FOR POSTING THIS!
We are glad to have saved you the cost of a kidney

A soldier tries to explain to a little girl that he has killed her parents. My, my Kuiama, she came in the morning
She smiled but the tears on her little face
Showed the pain that had been in that far-off place
So sad, treated so bad
My, my Kuiama, don't break your heart tryin'
To say how your ma and your pa passed away
And they left you to wander the ruin and decay
Real mean, that bullet machine
See here Kuiama, now ten thousand miles
Is a long, long way and you're here today
And you won't go back so you might say
"Hello, how do you do?"
Kuia, stop your cryin', there's no bombs a-fallin'
No horsemen in the night a-ridin'
Through your dreams and tearing at your life
Baby, goodnight
No more silver rain will hit your ground
And no more guns will sound
No more life be drowned
No more trenches where the soldiers lie
And no more people die
Beneath that big black sky
Wake up, Kuiama, I got somethin' to tell you
It's just that I mean, well, that is to say
That I'm trying to explain but I'll start again
For you, I must be true
Kuia, in this country, they got rules with no reason
They teach you to kill and they send you away
With your gun in your hand, you pick up your pay
So cool, that no mercy tool
Kuia, please believe me, I just couldn't help myself
I wanted to run but they gave me a gun
And they told me the duty I owed to my fatherland
I made my stand
Kuia, I just shot them, I just blew their heads open
And I heard them scream in their agony
Kuiama, she waits there for me
True blue, you saw it through
😮... 🔝⭐💡👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you very much!!!...
Kuiama tells the tale of a soldier who has found an orphan girl (Named Kuiama) wandering the ruins of a battle-ravaged village in the Vietnam war. The soldier is trying to comfort the girl and also to explain how he was the one who killed her parents. Despite a few lyrics which might you think the song is about WWI ( as pretended by some fans) Kuiama is really about the Vietnam war said Bev Bevan in 1973.
In North America it was on ELO 2 album with Roll Over Beethoven ❤
I've died and gone to heaven. Thank you, Midnight Special. Roll Over Beethoven next? 😊Pretty please 😊
Love ELO, Jeff lynne and All other members ♥️👍
One of my favorites from them
Wilf sure nails that solo. RIP Mr Gibson.
great song. had good taste as a ~9yr old via Ole ELO.
Grew up in the ELO era.
But only owned a couple of their LPs.
Never heard this tune until now.
Me neither.
This song belongs to the 2nd LP of the ELO, titled simply ELO II.
The complete list of that LP is:
1- in Old England Town (Boogie No 2)
2- Momma
3- Roll Over Beethoven
4- From the Sun to the World (Boogie No 1)
5- Kuiama
I love it. Awesome performance. Terribly sad song one you learn what the lyrics are about.
Que reliquia 👏👏👏👏👏👏
I haven't heard this in a long time! I was a total ELO fanatic in the late 70s, and I even played their second album- which this song is from- quite a lot at the time.
The edit here is pretty bad ( the original song is about 11 minutes), but it's nice to see this early material played (almost) live!
This version is so good..., would like to have this released on lp/cd
Kelly was a good addition to ELO, Mike has a unique singing voice also
what a beautiful violin solo...
This was by far the best violin player elo had..He left after just one year and died a few years back
Wilf Gibson. RIP.
Magicaly Unique track, was just playing it an thought wonder if theres a live version:)
R.I.P. Richard Tandy, Michael Edwards and Wilfred Gibson.
En todos los tiempos siempre tiene la misma calidad. Grande elo
Very early ELO. Roy Wood had just left the band.
Roy Wood is such talented guy.
Do you happen to have the ELO performance from February 18, 1977? that legendary performance in which Jeff Lynne was dressed in blue performing without sunglasses? ELO were the hosts for the episode btw

Jeff lynne elegia muy bien a sus colaboradores para plasmar muy bien la idea musical.
One of my favourite ELO songs ever, and butchered within an inch of its life to fit an incompatible format.
Sad, but I'm still glad and grateful to see this snippet.
It was for TV requirements. Jeff has an incredible voice in this performance ❤
I hope they post a song by Flash with original Yes guitarist Peter Banks
We will get there. Thanks for watching.
Never seen that one -- wow! Not sure the violin solo is live, sounds exactly like the studio version.
I wept when I learned the meaning of these lyrics
Sadly,, this is only half of the track
But still a fantastic interpretation❤
YASSS!!!!!
Mitch Hedburg played bass and sang harmonies in ELO? Cool.
What an odd song, almost a country I Am the Walrus with some King Crimson violin thrown in.
My Grandfather use to say to me..."You better not be in that back seat playing with your jigglypuffs!" No Grandfather, I'm staring aimlessly and inefficiently out the window.
"No Bombs a falling" intresting to hear that from a war zone where bombs do falling above my hose ! Asylum in UK once again
My howse
So this is where My Morning Jacket got their sound.
A pity this is cut in various places. It would be good to hear the full thing. I can't find any other 'live' video of this song.
Amazing. I loved this on the album ELO II, but this is BETTER! And Live (yes, i know they're performing over theirr recording)?
👏👏👏👏👏
I thought performances on TMS were live. There's some use of backing tapes going on here methinks. Happy to be proven wrong
Vocals are 100 % live, from 1974 all ELO performances were completely live.
the music here is playback, the vocals is live..
They did 3 or 4 disco songs in 1979-1980 out of 15 albums so give us a break. And the disco songs charted in the top 10.
@@heavyheadrecordsThe vocals were live!

I am in love with the long hair Blondie ... Im my dream his douther Come to me ... I thought it was the reality, but the realiry is less real. ..
I have always loved this song. It's a shame this isn't a live performance apart from the vocals.
This is 100% live!❤
Mike does alright singing in this one but pick a vibe goddammit not really a song where it’s appropriate to experiment 😭
"Pick a vibe", what are you talking about??
This looks and sounds amazing but I am kinda disappointed that ELO was one of the few bands to mime and not play live on this show.
All ELO performances from 1974 to 1977 were completely live.
They said producing the same sound to pick up and record with all the strings on tv was atrocious
@@lambslips1 What happened after 1977?

ELO always plays live on all tours..
A performance on TV is different, and they did not always play live, as in this case the music is playback and the voice is live... Lynne sings over the pre-recorded music...
and of course he also played live on tours after 1977.
On the 1978 tour they simply used backing tapes to complement what the group DID PLAY LIVE..
Those support tapes were only from the orchestra and choir section and some supporting voices..
the rest of the music was live...
Lynne's guitar was live...
Bevan's drums were live...
Kelly's bass was live
Tandy's keyboards were live (except those orchestral sections and choruses and vocoder which were pre-recorded support tapes)
Mik's violin, Hugh and Melvin's chellos were live added to those pre-recorded support tapes of the orchestral section already mentioned)
Also on the 1978 tour they had an 8th live member who was the monitor technician Jake Commander, who from his position behind the monitor console supported the group by playing 2nd guitar and backing vocals..
It's not a secret or anything unknown, there are many bootlegs from the 1978 tour and the 1981-82 tour that you can hear perfectly, it's all live
How can their music be so good, and their wardrobe be so bad?!?!?
The early 70’s
Same with Rush in the 70s
Wow. Definitely the oldest version of the band I've ever seen. I only recognize Mike Edwards on cello...the other 2 string players I don't recognize. Plus Mike Albuquerque on bass. Wow. 😮
Don't heard about them but thanks anyway!
Do you live under a rock?
I think you've probably heard them before. This just happens to be a very obscure song.

You are at the wrong place man!
Sucks not a catchy tune, not what I expected when I think of ELO. Their definitely just a greatest hits band, all the other stuff like this, is sour
Early ELO was a totally different animal than the ELO that later created those pop hits
You need to hear this song in it’s full length version to understand why this performance isn’t the best: The original album version is around 11 minutes long and is an anti-war song from the point of view of a soldier who was having to explain to his girl what he was going through.
Funny...I alway felt this came from a time BEFORE the band sucked! Different strokes....
early ELO much heavier and better than the 'pop' ELO....the band peaked with the album
'Face The Music' before all the pop stuff....
a new world record / out of the blue....were decent.... discovery, time, secret messages
....OK....
Thanks for that in depth appraisal, Mr or Mrs Sweeping statement....
Nice but too bad the song had to be shortened for the broadcast, that sucked.
