Woody recorded another hymn like song on his 1973 "Boulders" solo album, it is called "Songs of Praise". It was also recorded by the New Seekers as one of the possible entrants for Eurovision Song Contest, the song chosen as the New Seekers entry was chosen by the tv viewers, it was called "Beg, Steal or Borrow".
At this point, ELO had two of rock music's great vocalists and songwriters: Jeff Lynne and Roy Wood. Thanks ELONut for posting this footage -- I never thought they'd have anything from that early in their career.
The first ELO album (in my opinion) is a minor masterpiece of Baroque & Roll. It's sad that it's generally under appreciated and overlooked by mainstream fans of the band. "Boulders" by Roy Wood even more...Dear Elaine.
ELO at their very best. I witnessed Roy Wood live in concert only last week, 40 years after this video was made and the man and his music is still giving so much pleasure to thousands. He's a legend.
What a beautiful tune. Roy Wood always provided wonderful imagery with his lyrics. His voice sounds lovely in this performance! Side note: Hugh McDowell looks so young! I think he was still a teenager at this time.
Beautiful, delicate song with Roy Wood in early ELO and rare sight Jeff Lynne on bass. Great! Cheers for the upload really! Essential archival stuff..😀👍
Roy seems like he had a lot of classical/folk training. I feel like he could have helped Jeff’s musical and lyric ideas develop a lot more, which stagnated and regressed at some point without someone like Roy around imo. I like song writing teams where there is some clashing of personality leading to more interesting results. Unfortunately they tend to not last that long!
Me too. I became elo fan in 1976. Saw them in concert 1981. I did not like the changes of the band meembers and the string players. I still have all their albums starting in 1971
Yes, both Roy Wood and Jeff Lynne were and are studio- men. Both very shy in the public. In the summer 1973 Wizzard visited in my homeland Finland. People came to see and hear See My Baby Jive and Angel Fingers live. But in the middle of the first track Roy Wood lost his nerves and soon the whole show was over and they disappeared from the stage. I was then only nine but I have read about it but never got an answer for that.
In detroit 1974 wizard warmed up kiss at Michigan palace...i was a fan of elo and had all their albums & been to 2 elo concerts up to that point ...i was interested in seeing roy wood/ wizard knowing he started elo with jeff Lynne and bev bevan...i liked what roy was doing but warming up "kiss" ? all the kiss crazies booed roy off stage it was a disaster...i felt bad for roy...why would concert people set roy up to fail...i was not happy
This brings back memories of repeatedly listening to the ELOI and ELOII double CD I bought many years ago. Thank you so much for uploading this, I never saw this before now.
Well. I was a major ELO fan in the day but didn't know there was any overlap between the R Wood ELO and ELO2 besides Jeff Lynne and Bev Bevan. A stupendous vid and a great tune. Thanks!
Roy Wood was incredibly shy, that's why he had to hide behind the make up and stuff, He was so shy that when he started his first band the move he couldn't even sing his own songs and had to get another singer to front the band.
@FinnMove It is said that he dressed up in different make up, disguises because he was extremely shy and it was his way to "hide" and make it easier to perform live
Awesome! Roy Wood looks so cool! Father time! Anyway 1 of the only times you see Jeff Lynne in the background and not the leader! Its great to revisit this great music and talent. It needs to be revitalized again.
Thanks for posting. Interesting line-up with transition from the debut album 'Electric Light Orchestra/No Answer' to 'ELO 2'. Wilf Gibson on violin (replaced Steve Woollam, and in turn replaced by Mik Kaminski), Bill Hunt on French Horn (left when Jeff assumed sole responsibilities for the band), Hugh McDowell, Mike Edwards and I think Colin Walker on cellos (Hugh left with Roy and went to Wizzard, then came back by 'On The Third Day'), Richard Tandy on keyboard (having been on bass I think as part of original live line up) and of course Jeff, Roy and Bev. My fave track from the debut ELO album.
Hugh McDowell was in the original ELO live-line-up but left the band together with Roy Wood and Bill Hunt to form Wizzard. He returned to ELO to the On the third day tour.
Beautiful song. Roy Wood must have left the group soon after. he had a great voice. No way you can Roy Wood and Jeff Lynne in the same group with their talents for long.
I can't help wondering what Roy Wood, Jeff Lynne and Bev Bevan could've achieved had they remained together. Roy's work didn't sound complete, and Jeff became MOR. I'm not saying they were bad, just better in the same band, for me.
An amazing song.
One of my favorite songs got the album brilliant

Wood's voice is amazing. The song feels like a hymn.

I agree. I know people who are huge ELO fans and they have no idea who Roy is. Americans, anyway. Roy had a much bigger presence in the UK.
@@ashleymonday298 Thanks Ashley. Roy will always be considered a musical genius and treasure to pop music culture.

What a great voice and great talent that is Roy Wood. So overlooked.
So incredibly beautiful. One of the best ELO numbers
What a beautiful tune. Roy Wood always provided wonderful imagery with his lyrics. His voice sounds lovely in this performance! Side note: Hugh McDowell looks so young! I think he was still a teenager at this time.
That he can chew gum, wear that getup, play guitar and sing like that at the same time is impressive.
Roy Wood looks like a 100-year-old man in this video, but he was only 25 then!
(Born 8 Nov. 1946)
No, he looks like he always looked. Just as the Santa Claus as he is.
just as the loon we love so much
He was known to style himself extravagantly in these particular years alongside both Liberace and Sir Elton John!
He looks like a Wizard... Funnily enough! :)
Gandalf meets John Lennon.
i"m so happy this exists. wonderful

My gosh the arrangement is magnificent
Just want to give Roy a bloody big hug. Such a talented fella
Nice to see Jeff playing bass here : - )
Yeah Richard Tandy was playing bas originally in the band, but moved onto keyboards (as seen in the video).
Heavenly! ... Just heavenly. Thank you very much for sharing this video.
Great music ageless
Brilliant. One of Roy's best, and certainly his best for ELO.
this one and "Look At Me Now"..
It's his worst actually

A truly beautiful song. Too bad Roy didn't stick around longer.
And what an amazing voice...

Safe to say this is my favorite Roy Wood-penned ELO song. An absolute piece of rock history.
Me too. I became elo fan in 1976. Saw them in concert 1981. I did not like the changes of the band meembers and the string players. I still have all their albums starting in 1971
Well, there's only 4 choices, and 2 of them are instrumentals. : / I'm more partial to "Look at Me Now" myself.

One of Roy’s greatest tunes and performances.
A song of love. From a gum-chewing wizard. I come back often - it's spellbinding.
When Jeff Lynne isn't your band's best musician, singer, or songwriter, it means Roy Wood must be in your band too.
Spot on.
Also producer xD
RalonzoP absolutely Roy is a genius, Jeff said if you can blow it , bow it or pluck it Roy can play it
That was a phenomenal statement. Loved it.
I think both Roy Wood and Jeff Lynne are equally talented. It's just that they both have a different style of music.
This brings back memories of repeatedly listening to the ELOI and ELOII double CD I bought many years ago. Thank you so much for uploading this, I never saw this before now.
Emotional brilliance
Roy Woods voice gets me every time...
I never knew ELO and Leon Russell worked together! ;-)
Biblical vocal performance !!!!!!!!!!
And Roy is dressed to match.
Thanks ELONut for posting this -- I never realized there was any footage of Roy Wood era ELO. I think the first ELO album is an underrated classic.
Wow, beautiful.
This is far removed from the E.L.O. I'm used to, but it's enchanting in its own way.
Complete control of his vocals
What a beautiful song!
Simply unreal talent👏🏻👏🏻
Great track! Love Roy Wood.
It is Hugh! still a teenager here!

This is Roy Wood at age 25 in case you're not familiar 😉
Is it just me or did ELO's members all used to have really fascinating hair?
:D
Fantastic
What a beautiful melody Roy at his best.
Damn Father Time can sing

Eu pensava que esse cara era velho, Mas em outros vídeos vi que era só maquiagem para disfarçar. E ele era jovem e bonito até, tem uma voz linda
Além de tocar mais de um instrumento, assim como Jeff. Na banda The Move, Jeff toca piano.
Roy Wood taught Jeff Lynne everything... Great upload.. Bless !
Regis Palmer what? Go and listen Idle Race with Jeff Lynne. Was way head of time and Wood has nothing to do with it at that point yet.
