A diesel fired bunk heater will keep Kurt and Opie warm in cooler weather, but won't keep the truck engine warm. An APU can provide power for cab heat, engine block heat, fuel tank heat, electricity to run TVs, refrigerators, etc, and charge the truck batteries. APUs use about one quart of fuel per hour compared to one gallon per hour for a truck engine. I drove for a large company whose extreme cold weather policy was to idle the engine and add Anti-Gel fuel treatment at each fuel stop. An APU will cost around $15,000 but the fuel savings will pay for itself in a few years. Safe travels. 😊

I check samples of engine oil,coolant,transmission and axels. Found my transmission before it grenaded and my head. Well worth it. I have a websto bunk heater and a green apu. I cover my bunk heater sensor, and my apu heat is on, and it's amazing... just a thought. And im saving money on fuel. You can't go wrong.
One of my favorite tools to carry is a lazor thermometer. I will get temps on tires, bearing housings, radiator, etc. Equal temps on tire means they are OK and the same for bearings.
W900L is hard to beat ! i mean hard to get better ! i drove one maybe a few years older than yours, also had a wood floor ! it s in my videos, in the last rows ! you can see the outside-inside of it ! lol @ Italian company so all the tucks were Italian colors ! Gold & Burgandy ! Those trucks were very well maintained ! after every trip it was greased, checked everything ! So when you left you were sure it was good and ready ! Unfortunatly those trucks were too expensive on fuel so they bought Cascadias ! lol ya ! But i was already gone when they let go those nice Kenworths and Petes ! glad you made it home ! see ya later my friend ! 🤠
2 million on a set of drives is about double life expectancy. My front drive (Eaton)in one truck I had spit out a pinion bearing at a little over a million. With that many miles I hope you go ahead and do both. Go luck on it either way. Enjoy your channel.
I chased a vibration for months until an old time mechanic worked out it was the nut holding the Ujoint yoke on. Turns out some time in the past a previous owner ran it loose & wore the surface of the yoke. By doing it up tight it vibrated. Leave it a bit loose was all good. After tailshaft balance & a lot of other 'repairs' he worked it out. Hope you give us a run down Kurt. Good case for a "fund me" hehe

I grew up in an old building that had gone from being a theater, drug store, grocery store, apartment building, etc. Way cool! I hate breaking down out on the road. I’ve been there a few times & I’ve helped a few others bring their trucks home when a rear end/transmission would go out. It puts you in such a vulnerable position that you really don’t need to be in. Things do happen though. If you keep an eye on such things, then you can usually get a better idea if you can milk it a bit longer or if you just have to bite the bullet & get it fixed. From my understanding, metal frames usually last a lot longer than aluminum frames. Well, that’s what I’ve found out on old trucks. Any aluminum frame truck usually had warped frames or had major alignment issues on front or rear of the truck. Maybe they were just abused. I almost bought a cabover Diamond REO & my brother talked me out of it for that reason. Hopefully it won’t be as bad as you’re thinking…maybe some bushings or U joints like you said. With many years of driving the K900 I'm sure you are quite familiar with every sound emitted from the Kenworth. Driving an International 4300 in the 1970s, the mechanic at the company shop rather doubted me when I told him the Cummins 350 had an exhaust leak that I'd been hearing on returning from the east coast. A few days later the same mechanic asked how I knew about the leak. My ears were much better then because straight out as I told him, I could hear that particular sound. In the same way you know the sounds your truck makes just as I did way back then. No sense being caught out on the side of the road, less expensive fixing in the shop than dealing with the complications beginning at the side of the road. The only problem. S witheaitin on a wheel bearing or rear end bearing, if you don’t make it to a shop the tow charges plus hookup is VERY expensive or if the bearing spins in the housing Both are really costly. Hope you make it to the shop. You stay safe and havagudun trucker.
Nothing sounds better than a Cat cruising down the highway. I've been watching you shift and it looked weird. I googled the shift pattern of the W900. Wow. Not like a vehicle transmission. Would like to hear some discussion on the shift pattern and how you figured it out.
The rear end vibration is usually slower and seems heavier than a u-joints at least that's the way I perceived it. I have seen a couple of rear u-joints that took grease good were tight but finally failed and the problem was one end was not taking grease. Good luck it's always stressful dealing with breakdowns.
The one thing that stands out are those led h/lamps. I keep suggesting that S/T/Dan does the same. Rebuild. We had a 1988 V8 350hp Merc that was SO economic and a REAL puller, that we rebuilt her. Didn't take a huge amount of downtime or cost. Worth every penny. (She had 1.5mill miles on her then.)
I'm a preventative maintenance dude with a pretty good record on anything I look after and hate been slowed down with a breakdown. I know what you are saying with getting a lot more miles out of dodgy bits and in some circumstances have had to practise wait , hope and we will see. but prefer to keep moving reliable like. Making money is what it is all about.
Tough Luck Kurt. But as you know you got all the life out of those Diff's. You didn't say if it was the rear diff or power divider. If at all possible I would change them both because one can't be far behind the other. The rear diff does 90% of the work along with the through shaft front power divider rear bearing and front power divider input bearing. I know you said the engine was refreshed, and I think the trans too? Might as well get it done now before you get busy. I guess I better get with Uber Dad and place an Order! Tom
The air suspension problem could knock a ujoint out pretty quick but if the rear end bearing sptead metal all over then you should check the wheel bearings
I lost a rear pinion bearing once. I pulled the jack shaft between the rears and locked in the power divider and put another thousand miles on it before I could fix it. Doing that saved the ring and pinion along with the chuck. You really don't want to buy one of those.

What it would have cost to have her brought home on a hook would probably pay for a good portion of the rear end 😃 There's a reason why Kenworth and Peterbilt cost more money. The haters say that you are just paying for a name, because the drivetrain components are the same with some exceptions, but there are reasons why the trucks became popular in the first place, besides being the best looking trucks on the road... Reliability, the cabs are built better, and the wiring is typically done a lot nicer. I started out driving a Kenworth when I was 18 and I drove for 40 years. Most of those years were in a KW or a Pete. Sure things can break on any truck, but all of those trucks were very reliable. During my career I also drove a Freightliner cabover. It was only 2 years old when I drove it, and I was always fighting wiring gremlins, squeaks, leaks, rattles, broken a/c dash vents etc. It was a nice looking truck. It had the big sleeper (flat top), quite a bit of chrome and polished aluminum, the nicest interior you could order, and it had a Big Cam III 400 that had some work done to it. It ran really good for what it was, and ironically I really liked the truck but all of the faults that I mentioned got really old. You pay more when you buy new and used, but to me the extra cost is worth every dime.
Not really broken but some major repair work needed obviously. I wouldn't play chicken with that one too long. Sadler Powertrain in Cedar Rapids does pretty good work.
Lol doubt he’d want a new truck. New truck are all plastic shit and computer crap and auto, with DPF and emissions. Older trucks will run circles around any new trucks. It’s better keep your old truck going then buying anything new. New trucks will spend most there time in shop and with downtime.
I was just about to say the flats are definitely worse than the hills when you said something. The trucks from factory like running through the rolling hills and curves in Washington Idaho and Montana the trucks use more fuel through the great plains I figure since the truck is constantly under load as opposed to those down hill miles in through the passes and hills
It’s all about being able to get the parts! A guy with a freightliner Cascadia with a Cummins or Detroit would take less than an hour to find parts no matter where he is😁😁😁

Put a Green APU on First Class. A/C for summer and heat for winter plus it will be plumbed into engine of truck to keep engine warm for winter overnights. It burns about 1 gallon in 8 hours instead of at least 1 gal/hour.

I want to let you know 24 years ago when I own my trucks I actually found a used for a whole rear end with axles used cheaper than what it would cost to rebuild it and it came out of a truck that had been wrecked with low miles so if it gets where you're going to spend a lot of money you might just check around and see about that maybe

It's good the bearings didn't let go on the road somewhere. At least you have the luxury of being able to get it to a shop on your own watch.

I have a Webasto Thermo Pro 90 on my old Kenworth. Engine stays at 180 and I stay nice and warm too. Not cheap though.

I've been replacing parts about every to weeks last week was brake and next week it's wheel bearings and hubs because I let it go too long

Martin put a heater in one of there trucks and he loves it. Kurt a gaulded u-joint will give you fits and most still take grease. 👍🇺🇸
My Espar is probably the nicest accessory I’ve ever had on a truck. Definitely beats freezing in the morning.

Yeah in my last w900 it was a 2001, I put a new Reman rear in the rear, then 2 weeks later I did the front. lol No more worries.

Kurt. No offense. But I don't think you do preventative maintenance at all. Really outside of fluids and grease your at the lack of maintenance stages. That rear end wouldn't cost you so much if you would've just addressed it man. Just saying
Dot distribution is a family owned company, it was owned by a wonderful lady named Dorothy. I think the company is ran by her kids now. I believe that if you had put in a claim they probably replaced the hole front end. Just the kind of people the Tracy’s are.

I want to let you know 24 years ago when I own my trucks I actually found a used for a whole rear end with axles used cheaper than what it would cost to rebuild it and it came out of a truck that had been wrecked with low miles so if it gets where you're going to spend a lot of money you might just check around and see about that maybe
