The 50s is kind of where it all started! I love looking back at the T Bone Walker and Chuck Berry's and all the other legends from the decade!
How to be a 90’s guitar player : lot of alcool and anger
Drugs
+wah pedal
lots of heroin a ds2 pedal and long hair boom
And a shotgun in the mouth
@@ayoutubeaccount5357 yes
My fav 50s player is that mcfly guy you know the chuck guy covered him
I thought is name was Calvin?? ...Calvin Klein??😉😎
@@kwamijw3363 oh yeah I’m thinking about Calvin’s friend. think mcfly had had a son named Marty.
I wasn't ready for that yet but my kids are gonna love it.
50's music doesn't get enough love! Not a lot of people know that the original intent of the electric guitar was to capture as clean a sound as possible compared to the acoustic, so yeah it wasn't until the 60s that people dove into changing its sound. And that the rock and roll which was invented in that era (could even say late 40s) all derived from the Blues.
BB King, Chuck Berry, hell Elvis Presley, all great influences!
I'm a bass player by the way.
Its quite funny because now we are on a search for the dirtiest heaviest tones possible.
@@TheBanana93 Not all of us.
I wonder what people back then would think of good music now. also "out there" genres like ambient, metal, prog, etc
Same I am also a bass player that loves 50's rock and roll
+Link Wray
Nice, Mike - evolving from pure humor into teaching (while still being funny). This channel will be good 👍
I liked the skit videos but it's good to see it branch out (although I'm not quite convinced that this isn't still one...)
@@robinr22 still though lol he’s so chill with this vibe lol
Btw, you forget that one kid who showed up for a week in Hill Valley and played an epic performance. I think his name was Calvin.
Buddy Holly was my favorite 50s era axe man, but yes Marvin’s cousin was really good too.
Do a 70's and 80's and 90's version of this!!
How to be a 70s guitar player: Send your request and portofolio to Vulf Records.
Why you skip the 60s??
70s: never cut your hair and overdose on heroin
80s: spend half your money on stompboxes and the rest on cocaine
90s: all of the above, plus flannel
Detail missed: Taking the ashtray bridge off your Tele not because it gets in the way of palm-muting, but because you actually need an ashtray. The tobacco-grime buildup in the amp circuitry was a big part of the sound back then.
Also the 3 saddle bridge that leaves everything slightly off from where it should be. I have one on a Squire and you actually get used to compensating for it when playing lol.
@@atlanticskies5573 In what sense do you compensate for it when playing?
@@theexplodingmothfromhell8012 Play the wrong note then blame it on the bridge I guess.
@@davidcudlip6587 Ah of course
Btw, i like it when you make non-guitar stereotype vids like this. its a breath of fresh air for me
Ok, we need to talk about how this video has the perfect balance between humor and teaching.
This video has the perfect balance between humor and teaching, which is something I’ve been trying to get right in the classroom FOR A WHILE
@@mrflexaeldman Hope you figure It out m8 that's make an incredible difference
@@Zico_277 thanks I’ll never give up!
Love your vids, I've got 7 kids I've taught them all to play. We love these type of vids plus I'm a tele guy
Chad
7 kids??Guess guitar ain't your only hobby
that's a dream dude, God bless!
Well, I could bemoan the fact that my dad never taught me how to play any instrument as he himself couldn't. However, I had a great dad who instilled some wonderful qualities in my sister and I, bless his and my mom's soul who helped him.
Your pfp says enough about what guitar you play
This gentleman is gonna blow up very quickly. He’s creative, funny, and he’s doing content no one else is doing. 👍
He is good, but I'm not sure about color not yet being invented yet. I wasn't there, but I'd bet that was a product of black and white photography - not the actual color of things.
Also mention the 50’s progression for that soft stuff: I-vi-IV-V
Beato
The doo-wop progression 😁😁 It is so common that even in modern pop it is still used, but not with all the lush vocal harmonies and AABA song structures that doo-wop was mostly well-known for 👍
nah, johnny b goode is the only 50s song
I absolutely love this video!
I really like you how integrate the history lesson with the playing lesson. And, of course, the comedic moments make it all go down smooth.
You know I never noticed how many of Chuck’s rhythm techniques were picked up by 2000’s alternative rock kids until he played some. That could definitely be the opening riff to a 2000’s song about how a guys crush never replied to him in the AOL chat room and now he’s depressed and gonna party it off
I swear, Mike has such a smooth voice, he could voice an entire audiobook, and I would listen to it for the rest of my life.
Scotty Moore is a very underrated legend from that era. He played with Elvis. Check out Mystery Train and try to attempt to play it
Hello, if you can check his amp out, it had a tape delay machine built in the amp!
I love the back to the future reference
More of these, please! Great balance of information and humor!
Love this format!
Thanks, man. Keep 'em coming!
Best vid yet. All are fantastic, wasnt expecting you to drop so much info in this one. Bad ass brother
Liking the change and freshness in content
At this point I'd like to be guitar a player of any decade. As usual I find your videos interesting and entertaining. I'm an old guy and I'm familiar with all those guys you mentioned. At one time I even had 'albums' by most of them. I can't play guitar, but I sure can listen to guitar players including you.
I'm an old guy too! God bless you.💜☺👍
Never too late!
@@heavyjoechipman3594 Bless US.
How to be an 80s guitar player:use tight jeans, long hair, tank top,use Ibanez/Kramer guitars, copy and paste Eddie van Halen licks
Hey man, it's never too late.
You can go to your local shop and grab yourself a decent guitar and a little amp, and probably get lessons too if you want.
No matter your skill level or age, you can still find joy in making music.
UA-cam recommended me this channel randomly and I never stopped watching the videos. Simply too good my man
You're doing great, Blessings to you and yours brother
I got surprised in a good way. I was really waiting for a joke vid but instead you came up with a teaching and anjoyable one. Well done.
Absolutely amazing, love the back to the future reference.
I always enjoy your videos man!
This was way more informative than expected and I'm all for it
Love your vids! Subbed :D
Dang that’s a nice vid, hard to find stuff that’s not crazy time consuming but educational and fun at the same time
Great video man! I like this longer style with a bit more personality.
I totally expected this to be another meme video, and although I enjoy those style of videos this was actually really nice for a change.
Great video. Educational, entertaining, and to the point. Count me subscribed.
I love your videos man! I'm curious to hear what you have to say about 50's style blues solos.
This is great. Thank you.
Love this!! 🙂
Great vid !
Your last 2 videos have been pretty on point. You’re weirdly normal in this one. But I like it.
Would love to see this for the following decades as well
I just love 50s music so someone doing this is awesome!!!!!!
Great video Mike :)
I just want to add, to get heavier tones they would damage their amps. (A really good example of this is in Rumble by Link Wray and the Wraymen)
pretty sure the kinks did this too in you really got me.
1:35 love that back to the future refference lol
Fender Player series Telecasters are awesome. They play like the made in the USA Telecasters from around 2010. I love mine, put a Seymour Duncan Little '59 humbucker in the bridge with a coil-split switch and it's awesome.
Funny I'm wearing a White Polo Shirt, and Jeans today. All I need is a fine Tele, since I've been banging on a 66 Jazzmaster since I was 15. Nice video, a learning experience with a little nostalgia mixed in there! Oh...and very nice gear. Thanks for sharing.
Aw man I was really hoping that you'd do some 50s style solo'ing. Great vid tho.
I was a big fan of Marvin berry and the starlighters back in the day
Cool video!
Very cool, thank you
Spot on
this one was actually informative
Entertaining and educational
50s coming in nearly 30 years!!
Great video
Love the Back to the Future reference!
Vdry cool and liked the Marvin reference, the dude that played with Marty/Calvin at prom night
I really like your videos
I'm envious of how crisp your snap is.
this video is pretty good. just remember, if your'e going for that mid to late 50's Sunn Records sound, add a slap back echo (or delay) to everything
Fun video. Been playing (hacking) since '87, and still noodling with 12 bar blues!
🤘😝🤘
I gotta give props to you. You've managed to use humour while giving tips/techniques AND without dragging the video for 10-20 mins.
This sounds like it would be splendid for punk rock as well
Both memy and instructive gg
Hi Mike ,I wonder how you learnt playing guitar I like the way you play.
Much love Mazin 🙏🏽
I-vi-IV-V progression was also a hot commodity
Hey that guy's cousin, I'm sure I saw him on TV once, maybe twice, and I'm sure he was playing a HOLLOW BODY guitar.
I'm old enough I remember that "JUBILEE" white-gospel musical TV show that came on every Sunday morning, when one of those guys played an electric guitar, well, it was a Tele.
Whatev.
Hey, Mike, B. Goode!
as a rockabilly guitarist this is way too real
What jeans are they? Really nice looking
In fact, I'm quite sure the maple neck strat came before the rosewood tele
Never seen it fretted with the index and middle finger, that's wild
I just want to take a moment of silence for you middle finger fretting the 5th on those power chord riffs. You’re crazy man!
That back to the future reference LMAO
I like how this is educational and yet entertaining like the rest of your videos. One day, you'll beat Stevie T and Jared Dines dude, trust me on that.
Shame on you for not playing my ding a ling at the end 😂. You should do a 60's era next, focusing on Lonnie Mack.
Marvin’s cousin is a solid band name
Nice. I thought this was gonna be a joke but it's actually pretty sound advice. The Strat had been around for a few years but didn't really capture the public's attention until Buddy Holly's first appearance on the Ed Sullivan show, December 1st of 1957. Chuck Berry is one of my guitar heroes. Great player with a lot of imagination, but he also copped a lot of licks. Some were from Eldon Shamblin who played with Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys. Listen to Maybelline, then listen to Ida Red and you'll hear what I mean. He also borrowed a lot from Rosetta Tharp. Not taking anything away from Chuck, it takes a great ear to cop licks like that off a record. There were other important 50's players as well, guys like Scotty Moore, Bill Black, etc. One thing for the 50's look and sound, avoid Les Pauls. About the only guy playing a Les Paul in the 50's was Les Paul, lol.
the facts in this vid are so accurate and serious that it scares me
Maybe you weren't ready for that, but your kids are gonna love it
Scott Moore is my favorite 50's guitarist, im very much biased because my favorite singer os Elvis so idk.
Thanks for making me think of blues that way. Any tips for translating that to turn arounds using the same up the neck method?
Hi Mike Cole, To play the 1950s style of music you really need a Gibson or Gretsch semi hollow or hollow body guitar. Most of the Blues, Jazz and Rock A Billy Guitar players didn't use Fender guitar until the 1960s. If you were 70 years old or older you'd be old enough to have seen the bands back then and what they they played through.
Hogwash. And There are these things called Google and UA-cam. You don't have to be 70 to research and appreciate what those cats were doing back in the day.
Marvin Berry!!!😅😂👌
I’m stuck at step 2, switching to black and white 😩😩
I think that I would trust mike as my accountant too.
can yo lu do early 80s: dokken, EVH and Randy Rhoads
We need a how to be 80s!
Half the people watching this no longer have enough hair left to do that scene.
Marvin Berry!
Lol the first minute and a half or so were different than any other 50s' intro I've seen. As well as Marvin's cousin! and the incomparable Scotty Moore I'd also tell people to look up Grady Martin, Cliff Gallup, Carl Perkins and Link Wray plenty of others too but they will get you started.
Tunnel Snakes rule!
One of the fun things about Chuck is that he said that his entire guitar playing career was just a pale imitation of Sister Rosetta Tharpe. If you're not hip to her and her playing, you HAVE to be. She was one killer entertainer, and while she wasn't the most impressive technical player, she had a definite thing going that did influence a LOT of people.
Another fun thing about Chuck is that he never admitted that most of his sound came from Johnnie Johnson.
The Broadcaster (which became the Telecaster) came out in 1948.
Word. And the period of the "No-Caster" in between. And the under rated Esquire, a cool 50's classic. A lot of cool hollow bodies made the 50's sound unique as much as solid body guitars. Chuck wasn't a Fender type of guy. Or Scotty Moore.
Nice Back to the Future reference 😂
Help, I'm still stuck on how to go black and white. lol
Don’t forget Carl Perkins way underrated. A rock a Billy 50s guitar slinger.
What about Les Paul?
👍🎸😊
telecaster were made in the late 40s right??
“The Tele came before the Strat”
*pulls out rosewood board Tele*
wrong color too
3 tone sunburst instead of BSB
