I've had the same problem with diseases spreading quickly and often but I decided to make soap which works better. First of all I don't have epidemic outbreaks anymore at all, second I've got another trading good and third I don't need the desirability bonus yet.
The added damage because of the height works really well, saving a lot of money as you only need a few towers.

Just so you're aware it's basically finished as far as playability. It's been in Early Access for a few years now. I'd recommend it for a steam summer sale purchase
I usually avoid EA games, but Farthest Frontier is one you can go ahead and play. It's almost completely done & updates are very frequent.
I've played many hours since the first version came out and there are very few changes coming - I expect. The maps come out differently even with the same seed numbers. Lots of choices of game style and my I5 3060ti only gets the stutters in a 1500 person medium Pacifist map if spread to all four edges.

This is my first time terraforming and it’s killing me. Definitely not intuitive. Finally had some semblance of your design terraformed and I think I left the middle hill too tall as I couldn’t get ramps down the short sides. So frustrating and time consuming without more feedback
Make sure the terraforming selection starts from a point the workers can reach
