    Homelander is trying. He's *really* trying to be a good father.
    But he's just so fundamentally broken a person, he'll screw up somehow.
    *Edit
    To clarify, in light of the discussion below:
    Homelander’s absolutely being a slimy, manipulative and toxic mess of a father.
    No doubt about it.
    My point is, in his twisted view, he’s doing the best he can. He’s trying to be a father, but he has no clue how to be a good one because control, intimidation and manipulation is all he knows.
    And that is absolutely tragic.

      he's not trying to be a good father he just realizes he has nothing left other than his son. he's always been seeking someone's approval whether it was Edgar, the public, or now his son. he's an insecure and lonely psychopath.

      Bro's idea of being good father is telling his son to do whatever he wants to do.
      It makes sense from the perspective of someone who was put into an oven as a kid, but it's awful parenting. The kid's gonna turn out sociopath or narcissist.

      later in the episode he tries to work with his son to do something he really wants.

      His son wants to help people but instead of helping the victim Homelander just convinces his son to torture the offender instead.

    This is actually horrifying, because Vought's control mechanism just failed.
    They tried to contain him by getting him to need love and approval, but now that he needs it from just his son, if his son is corrupt, then they're right back to square one with him lasering his way out of the womb.
    Homelander didn't change or overcome his nature. He just transferred the peer group he wants approval from.

    • @315katty
      @315katty 5 днів тому +8

      Getting approval from his son is the lesser evil, though - which is a good thing. Ryan has morals. The ending, I predict, will either be that maybe Homelander will be taken down by his son, and Ryan thus becomes a genuinely good superman-like hero to take his father's place or maybe that Ryan might change Homelander somehow. Like, I dunno, Homelander actually do the RIGHT THING for once to get approval from his son - a tragic sort of happy ending somehow.
      Homelander wasn't always evil. He might sacrifice himself somehow which might satisfy his need for approval.
      Either way both endings will be good. I can't see Ryan becoming like his dad, for now, since he has morals (right now) and is new to the concept of being a super hero. I can only see Ryan becoming like his dad when he's much older and bored of saving people - realizing how ungrateful they are, how easily broken humans are, and that maybe his dad was right all along. But as said - that would be when Ryan will be much, much, older and tired of the repetitive life of being a super hero.

      It kind of shows that Homelander grew up when many people still thought psychology could securely bend people towards specific goals, while in truth the more forcefully you apply psychology the more likely you are to mess up, which is the about worst strategy you could follow while raising a superhuman child

    • @kedrednael
      @kedrednael 6 днів тому +16

      I think he is trying to be a good father honestly, trying to give Ryan what he never had. In the lab Homelander was basically told people from Vought designed his entire personality to control him. That probably solidified his desire to not need love from any normal human. Homelander of course sees all other humans as "less than nothing", while his son is special because "he is my son".
      I think Homelander immediately genuinely tried to indulge Ryan in his quest to help people. But Homelander is not used to actually helping people, he can't do it without being cruel to someone.

    You know is even worst because Ryan (and honestly everyone who didn´t came for the money) would be pretty anoyed by the whole marketing and movie star bullshit of Vough, so by having Ryan not doing this or that, HL is actually turning him more to his side. Hell, here we even see that Homelander has actually improved his manipulation skills, or maybe he just opened up to actually listen to his son, because he did horribly wrong the time he tried to convince his son that killing Koy by accident was okay, but now the made him enjoy seeing an asswhole creep being slapped. So yeah, this guy desrved it, but, we can only fear how far that can go....

    In a fucked up way, Homelander is trying to (violently) shield his son from being used as he was. The problem is that Ryan *might* turn out to be like his dad to impress him

    Homelander is GENUINELY trying. He’s trying to learn, he’s trying to reflect. He’s trying to treat Ryan better than anyone ever treated him. Comparing himself to emancipated slaves is cringe, but it’s definitely a breakthrough for Homelander caring what Ryan thinks/feels/wants/needs instead of just making Ryan do everything he did with his life.

    I really really hope, Homelander does get some kind of redemption...i mean he is not a hearthless monster....okay he tries to be one, but the need for love is still there, and he wants to love others. So i hope he gets his powers taken away in some way, and HAS to live a normal human life, that would be the best punishment for him, not death.

      @@Shatter149 bro he's just making a comment. No need to be a bully about it, saying he "lives in the blind society". He's just saying it's more interesting to show the human side of a monster like Homelander, than to just portray him as a two-dimensional villain. Just take a look at Anakin. He became a monster but ultimately his love for his son won, and his son never stopped loving him just because he became space Hitler... so I hope @ADRIANOS259 is right. It would be much cooler to see Homelander loose his powers and suffer instead of having him just die.

    I don't think Homelander will ever be redeemed but he'll probably have more conflicts about forcing his idealized vision onto Ryan. Ryan will be better than both Homelander and Billy Butcher, being a proper hero.

    At 1:36 AMAZING SHOT rn homelander is like season 1 Omni man. The brightly covered area that homelander and his son represent how he considers ryan his only world. (Like invincible and Omni man) the black pattern off the reflection shows how empty he considers the planet in terms of his new “humanity” which of course is his straight up most evil version. He no longer sees humans as people to him. They are now objects to manipulate and hurt. That being said homelander throughout the show has become entirely narcissistic. I wonder how that will play with Ryan down the line. Sooner or later they’re humanity is going clash. I’m anxious to see it ! 😁
