Catholic Action is needed today. This very concept is what is needed in the Churches today. Bring together folks from different professions, backgrounds in our local churches, and discuss what they are hearing. The next week, bring different folks together and discuss. I honestly don’t think the Priests are taught this today; and if so, they need help. See, Judge, Act. This very concept is being used by many different groups today, but many Catholic Churches, priests and lay people don’t know this. This is the key to growth. Bishop Barron is 100% spot on with this. I had a priest growing up in a small town who would go to everyone’s house and have dinner. He would spend individual time with families, while breaking bread with them. They would discuss what they are seeing in the community, in the news. The Catholic social teaching is the playbook; has always been the playbook. Take courage; go into the depths. Great way to close this discussion.

      A game:
Authentically deep deep inside would you not find God in the maze of a simple mind and find God in the direct paved road of a complex mind?
If the answer to both questions is yes, then use the intellect which discovered Atheism and theism to answer truly convincingly your answer/s to the above question.

Thank you for such a great discussion. I love John Henry Newman’s statement that our conscience is the aboriginal vicar of Christ. When we follow conscience, we follow Christ. Obedience to conscience seems to be our natural state. In Galatians we are told that the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness and self control. My conscience always pushes me toward these fruits. Too often I rationalize behaviors that violate conscience, and my conscience always rebukes me. Ignatius’s rules of discernment help me to find truth and to better follow conscience.

@andrew hager Sir, you can't judge all priest, of millions some had betrayed. for 2000 years The. Church chosen by Jesus the Christians of the Bible are the Catholic church. Judas was chosen by Jesus and he betrayed him just as some were not faithful to his church. All other churches are betraying Jesus for making churches without his authority, without his holy Spirit and the rite to forgive sins, all those who don't belong to the body of Christ are not his church, those are the false prophets. If you have a different teaching you are the false made up to deceit to steal the souls and their money..if you are not Christian Catholic you are the false Matthew 7:6,15,,21-23
      Matthew 24:11-14 24-25 Acts20:29-30
      Galatians 1:6-9. 2Thessalinians2:1-12
      1Timothy 1:3,-10. 4:1,2. 6:3-10
      2Timothy 2:24-26 3:1-7,13
Jesus only has one church one doctrine one faith one body in the Same Holy Spirit.all others are false, all have been betrayed by who they call pastor the true pastors Jesus ordered come from his church and they are the priest, the faithful. The Bible was made by the Catholic Christians of the Bible. The Catholic church is the church of God, how come all others cannot see this that it's written by Jesus, Just sharing the truth.

Not all Bishops, especially those who have been caught (or sheltered) by the church for terrible crimes. But if they were to talk to politicians, let it be the GOP who are hypocritical since they all have had abortions in their families. I'm not just talking about Trump (who is the least christian POTUS in my lifetime) who still gets the far right wing religious to vote for him, but the many GOP members who have gotten mistresses pregnant and/or asked that they get an abortion. Or the "christian" GOP members who claim their abortion was not a real abortion... it was different somehow.

Thanks for recalling that great MLKJr quote for us. That's what John Adams meant when he said, "Our constitution was written for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate for any other." When we the people, collectively, no longer hold THE truth to be self evident, and begin instead to operate according to our own "truth" which has neither conscience, nor empathy, nor fear of eternal consequence, we are in deep trouble.

The fact that Catholics have to read a book to remain moral is frightening to me because I don't need some random God(s) to know what is moral or right.

These men would never touch the topic of Civil Law vs. Common/Natural law and the evils of the legal society for fear of losing their jobs. 30:40 Barron tips his hand on this, "I cant go into the legal realm the way you can" but he never gets close to saying anything meaningful. Kolbe, Franz Jägerstätter, Sophie Schull are just a few examples of Catholics resisting violence and evil *because* of their faith in the risen Jesus. He will eventually be told the Church is evil because of slavery, the inquisition, the crusades, etc. Once again: don't let him settle for half truths!! A good start is to check Catholic Answers in the web and on UA-cam. If he can make it through this period of doubt, he will shed his immature faith (it's uncomfortable!) and build up a faith that will last in the truth. I'm praying for you!!

@Ms.LeClaire educate your son with the amazing fulfilled prophecies of the Bible (like the prophecies in old testament written hundreds of years before the birth of Christ on the mission and impact of Christ after he comes. The prophecy of the Roman Catholic church in the book of Daniel written hundreds of years before the birth of Christ, which states that Messiah will come during the fourth kingdom (scholars identify it as Roman Empire). And then the kingdom that Messiah establishes will eventually possess that empire and spreads across the globe. Exactly same thing happened as history proves. The Church that Christ (Messiah) established, (Church is the Kingdom established by Messiah) had indeed possessed the Roman Empire 300 years later and then spread throughout the world exactly as prophecies in the old testament. These are the events that only God has control over and no human has. This proves the existence of God of the Bible.
Also you can introduce your son to the most amazing scientific artifact in human history which is called Shroud of Turin. It is regarded as the burial cloth of Jesus and it is the most rigorously scientifically studied artifiact ever. It is in Turin. Numerous exceptional scientists have studied it and no one has ever produced the report how how the image is formed. The most perfect example given in a top journal by a scientist was that this image can only be explained by the immense amount of energy radiation within a fraction of second from the body of the person wrapped in that cloth.
Also there are groundbreaking scientific observations in Bible we which could only be observed and validated after 19th and 20th century.
God of the Bible is the true living God who created and sustains and also in charge of the world affairs.
Even the Israel 1948 independence is described in such a minute detail pin pointing the exact year of 1948. The way in which Jews will be gathered from across the globe to form a nation in just a single day and also describes the birth of Israel in a wonder. God asks if anybody has ever heard of a woman getting birth pangs after the child is born?. God then goes on to say so will be the nation of Israel be born. After the birth of Israel it suffers the birth pangs. That is what happened. After Israel declared independence the Arab nations surrounded and waged war against it but they were all lost. So many amazing thing are present in the Bible. It is not the Church who created God. It is God who established first his people Jews and then adopted Christians as well as His treasured possession for the glory of His Name.

if the faithful is steeped in contraceptive practices, how can we overcome the evil of abortion. Why do you observe the splinter in your brother's eye and never notice the great log in your own? Matthew 7:3

I just stopped the conversation after the discussion on abortion, as an issue of the sanctity of life being a preeminent issue. I think Bishop Barron might have it wrong. In this matter, isn't fornication the preeminent issue? I wish I could give a well thought out argument for this idea but I am not there yet however, I seem to be getting an inspiration, maybe from the Holy Spirit, that it is correct. What do you think? Also, it seems that if the bishops need to correct politicians and other Catholics in the public life about abortion which they should, they also need to do the same regarding immigration, stewardship of the environment, healthcare, police violence, unjust war, capital punishment, income inequality, worker's rights and many other issues. It is also important, I am confident that we can agree, that it is not enough to criticize a mistake but we (and now I include the informed laity) we also must instruct the offenders on why the Church condemns certain ideas and actions. The ideas discussed in this conversation are critical for the Church to successfully admonish sinners.

Abortion is surely worse than fornication, for abortion is the murder of innocent life.

I would as a question regarding “wokeness”. I would ask, as in the case of Georgia, what is worse? The voter suppression of the GOP, or boycotting Coca Cola , to speak up? I think that’s fairly obvious, voter suppression is the worse evil. I am not a liberal. And anti abortion, I am devoted to our church, but, abortion aside, there is a hollowness in the constant pointing fingers at liberals, while never pointing them at some conservative ideas. As two philosophers, you should see both sides, and be equally critical.

Guy, please take a look at the reaction I get from many Catholic conservatives! And then tell me I’m never critical of their ideas.

The Catholic conservatives who tend to criticize you are those who reject Vatican II. The conservatives being referenced here are republicans, a group composing a diversity of divergent perspectives, from libertarianisn (largely antithetical with Catholic Social Teaching) to Trumpism (also largely antithetical with CST).
While you admirably strive to present a holistic vision of CST and the Catholic Intellectual Tradition, I agree that it can seem you focus excessively on 'woke' culture and thereby the democrats, while inadequately challenging the myriad issues on the right (which Pope Francis is much better at challenging, perhaps one-sidedly too). Also, I would encourage a willingness to engage woke culture more charitably, in an analagous way to how you treat atheists and agnostics. Why not host a debate with someone who defends 'woke' views and affirm what is positive, challenge what is bad, and present the beautiful, superior Catholic alternative? It can seem that you tend dismiss uncharitably all woke views, and, in doing so, present a caricature.
I am a fan of yours, simply offering friendly suggestions.

Why do Catholic bishops/pope speak out against abortion and deny communion… but don’t do the same for war and greed/theft?

While the discussion in the abstract has its moments, having the Chairman of the Board of the National Organisation for Marriage as a guest is at best unnerving and at most providing a forum for the leader of a hate group.

I agree to a point on many of the things they're saying. However, I'm concerned that certain points will be taken too far. Take abortion for example. I'm against it, but are we to ignore the issues that face the woman bearing a child. The circumstances? Any she was raped, are we to ignore that horrible situation? Should she be held responsible for a child forced on her? The child has equal right to life but that woman deserves sympathy and her situation needs to be understood. Also, regarding lying. If the truth is always the best course, what about a situation where telling the truth puts an innocent in danger of being hurt or killed? Which is more important, the individual's safety or the principle of telling the truth? These are issues that shouldn't be glossed over. Yes, abortion is wrong, but we need to be careful with how we discuss it. I mean, if a person outside the church calls them out on something, say, a nunnery conducts abortions behind closed doors, and yet here are these Christians decrying abortion. Some could say that's laughable, maybe hypocritical. So, I agree with them, but I'm not sure they're being careful enough to discuss those delicate complexities. I'm hoping I'm wrong somewhere, but surely these are issues Christians need to keep in mind.
    Regardless, I'm enjoying these videos!
