I’m writing a novella scene by scene in PSILY. It’s curated and each story stands on its own but they all go together, too. I’m so glad you’re talking about fiction! I think there may be an uptick in popularity soon.
Hi Aimee! Funny running into you here. Do you have a link? I'd love to see your story. I tried going the route Zulie mentioned here with a pub dedicated to my serialized story, but fizzled out after about 3 months. Lack of curation meant no audience, and I didn't think to build one ahead of time. If only I'd seen this when it was posted. 😁
I have a precise plan for writing a novel in serial form on Medium. And this advice is perfect timing for me! Great ideas, Zulie. I started a new novel then after a few days, remembering how long it takes to actually complete a novel - even the rewrite (or many of them), then formatting into kindle format, I wondered if there was a way to do it on Medium. Your ideas are perfect, Zulie. I'm willing to start putting up chapters within 2-4 weeks from now. It may end up being a novella, so I like that flexibility by serializing it on Medium. And NOW I have to create a space for the articles I have written and then add a whole lot more. I'm having perfect-timing moments this morning - thank you so much! And get your novel started. I wrote two complete ones while I was sick as a dog waiting for a life-saving transplant. And I finished them both before the transplant!!! It was the most fun I've ever had - Just do it!
I too am interested in writing fiction, so thanks for sharing. I have written some semi-successful fan fiction, but have yet to write anything original, but someday I would like to. So, thanks for sharing.
@@caw25sha Actually no, it is on fanfiction.net. I would expect fan fiction to be illegal on any for profit site, so I wouldn’t even try to post it there, but thank you very much all the same.
I think Vocal Media would be a good option, possibly better than Medium, for writing fiction. They have a whole community (called Chapters) intended for serialized things, and in general fiction seem to be more prevalent and popular on VM than on Medium.
Awesome, thanks for the tip! It's true that Medium tends to promote more non-fiction and personal development content. That said, they also ran a campaign to promote some fictional stories, so I do think fiction writers are starting to get a little more exposure.
Medium vs Personal Blog? Which one is good for long term (considering brand value, earning, growth, etc)? If possible can you make a video on this? Thanks :)
@@ZulieWrites lol, my bad there's no feature like that but i was referring to the live stream notification when u schedule and also why dont u notify us in your social's. I follow u on all the platforms.
Fiction is a tough game anyhow. Actually, Wattpad sucks right now too. They took down their message boards, which was the main way you used to be able to get hits.
I wonder if there are other sites where you can post your fiction stories. I wouldn’t publish a novel or any long stories, I would think medium would be a great place to publish short stories
I was one of the people who asked about fiction so thank you 😀 In the month or so I have been on Medium I have written mostly on programming and they have done reasonably well for a beginner, about 5000 views so far. I also wrote one short story and it has had a grand total of 0 views which I'm not too upset about as it isn't really a mainstream part of what I want to do. However, I have a few other ideas for short fiction so maybe I'll stick with it and try to promote them better. I joined 5 Facebook groups recently and will try to be active on them. Do you or anyone else find them useful, either for getting advice or promoting Medium stories? I noticed you can add stories to series although I haven't done so yet. Maybe you could use them to group chapters of a book. Can't wait to read your fantasy novel, hurry up with Chapter 1... (Sorry for the long rambling comment. I'll go away now!)
I have found series to be mostly obsolete - about two years ago, when I first started, there was this weird function where when you published to a series, all your followers got a notification. The upshot was that everyone immediately rushed to create series, readers got fatigue from all the notifications, and eventually the functionality went away. I've not seen anyone use them successfully YET but that doesn't mean it isn't possible! If you use them and like them, I'd love to hear about it! Especially for fiction. FB groups I found very useful in the beginning, just to meet other writers, read their work and share my own.
My idea is not built on the importance of sequential chapters. It’s more like dropping the diary of a fictional character and having a laugh at him and yourself when apply.
Hey zulie, its been 2 weeks since I published my article but the site still says ' we are processing the story hang tight'. Does that mean it's rejected ?
Nope, that means they are still processing the story and to hang tight! I've heard 2 weeks is the max but possibly they are dealing with more volume than they can handle at the moment.
It is when you see a few words or sentence that you as reader like, and sees it as being of valuable. Have you ever seen something yourself, and agreed with it or it resonates with you. When that happens on medium you can highlight it you get notified when another reader, highlights something that they find of interest to them. Hope that this helps Chris if not feel free to ask for more clarity.
If I want to write about multiple topics, say programming and life advice, would it better that I create 2 Medium accounts for that? Otherwise I imagine its hard to brand yourself.
Hi! This is one of the nicest things about Medium - you can write about multiple topics. Medium's topic-driven algorithm means that people who follow you for you programming stories will see those, while those who prefer life advice will primarily see those stories. I write about cats, feminism, psychology, self-help, writing, and marketing, and occasionally other stuff, too, and I have not found it hard to brand myself.
Definitely check out their clarification: blog.medium.com/clarifying-mediums-new-terms-of-service-bad566e3f7da This highlights that: "This license doesn’t give Medium permission to sell your content to a third party, and we’ll never do that. You’re not granting us permission to use your content outside of Medium. You’re also not granting us copyright to, or ownership of, your content. So, for example, we’ll never claim the right to develop your content into materials such as books, films, or television shows without your knowledge and express consent."
I still haven't been brave enough to try, but I've got an empty day ahead of me... maybe I'll start! If you end up doing this, please let me know! I'd love to read whatever you post.
@@ZulieWrites thats kind of you to reply, im sorry if i sounded a little rude. Hm. I never thought about posting each novel on its own newsletter. Of course, I've been on Medium for two years, too, and I pretty much am a total failure. So, probably wouldn't work anyhow! If you can't attract an audience, you can't attract an audience. Heh, maybe I'm not much of a writer anyhow.

I know Vocal does fiction challenges on occasion. Medium is Ok for short stories; the audience just isn't really there for them.
Could you do this same thing on your own website? I wanted to do a fiction blog, or a post by post book.
You could! The benefit of doing it on Medium is the inbuilt audience there, while a website takes time to build an audience for.
