You can embroider hats, apparel, accessories, and home & living products, and you can choose from multiple placement options for your embroidery designs. To make your products even more awesome, you can create embroidered apparel with printed labels, just like you see here.
You might have noticed that not all stitching looks the same. And that’s exactly right because we work with different types of embroidery stitching.
    Flat and 3D puff embroidery
With flat embroidery, stitches are embroidered flat on the surface, just like in these examples. This works great for smaller, more detailed designs and solid shapes. This type of stitching looks smooth and is very durable, making the product look amazing even after countless times of wearing and washing.
3D puff embroidery means that the embroidery is raised. Used mostly for big shapes, just like in these examples. If you’re not a fan of intricate, detailed designs, this will be the perfect technique for you to make a statement with your design. Keep in mind that 3D puff embroidery is only available for hats.
    Standard embroidery limitations
The main thing to remember is that standard embroidery is not printing, so gradients, drop shadows, distressed textures, and shading are not possible, you can only use solid colors and shapes in your designs. This means you can’t use photographic imagery for your embroidery designs and you're limited to a 6-thread color limit per design.
How to create an embroidery design
You can create a design with the tools available in our Design Maker, or you can upload your own file made on any other design software. Let’s take a look at how you can create your own embroidered product using only Printful’s Design Maker.
Create an embroidery design with the Design Maker
The Design Maker is packed with design tools, and you can choose from a huge collection of clipart, quick designs, and text.
You also have the option to upload your own design files to the Design Maker.
Uploading your own designs to the Design Maker
When creating your own design file, keep in mind that there are certain file guidelines you need to follow. If your design doesn’t meet the requirements, it might not embroider the way you’ve envisioned. To see the file guidelines, click here, then click on the Print file templates tab to download the file guidelines for the necessary design placement.
You can also switch up thread colors for your design, if you want to dothat. If the file you’ve uploaded doesn’t meet the minimum size requirements, you’ll see a warning here. Another thing to look out for is the embroidery area. If a part of your design exceeds the embroidery area, it won’t be embroidered.
How to create 3D puff embroidery
The 3D puff embroidery option is only available for hats, so I’m picking this bucket hat from our product catalog. One more thing to keep in mind is that if you want to use this embroidery type, you should upload your own custom design.
    What is digitization?
When it comes to embroidery, all files need to be digitized to a format the embroidery machines support. Each embroidery type requires a separate digitized file. There is a one-time fee for each new design, and the fee depends on the type and placement of the design.
It’s important to note that, when you add new elements to an already digitized file, it’s a new design that has to be digitized again.

I'm really confused about how to illustrate for printful. I recently submitted a design/illustration to receive a sample product. My order was put on hold because they said some of the lines were too thin. They took an outline around a character and made it much too thick for my liking. I've seen designs with much thinner lines than the one they changed. When trying to communicate my concerns and suggestions, they were not acknowledged. It was like talking to an automated AI. It told me that it would revise the design based on what I said and send it to me for approval but I had not clarified anything... so far my experience has not been good. I really just want to make some nice designs to add to my store but I need more information on what works and what doesn't. Some of the designs in this video are much more intricate than the one I submitted.

Hi! Have you tried using CMYK colors in your designs?
We have to create the perfect embroidery file on our website: www.printful.com/creating-embroidery-file

I wish he would show in detail on how to do 3D puff embroidery, I still haven’t worked out how to do it.

Hi! 3D Puff method works best for bold shapes and text. If the method is available for the design, it'll show up in the Design Maker below Flat embroidery method. 🙂

@@PrintfulCustomPrinting Thanks for you reply, I used bold text but it got rejected again 🤦🏾

@@duderu4real94same here, my bold text got rejected and they reduced the size of it to where it’s literally half of the size of the print area which is much smaller than I want it to be. And so far the print guideline details are no help either. They make it so incredibly complicated to do what should be simple.

I love how you say "I'm going to make a 3D puff embroidery hat now" and then get sidetracked and never get to it.
I can't get the 3D puff style to work for the goddamn life of me and it's VERY frustrating.
Like, I can't select the embroidery style AT ALL, regardless of what hat, font or color style I choose.
I'm also noticing that only ONE style of dad hat has ANY pastel colors to choose from, not one single snapback.
Why can't we just choose the color of any hat using a gradient or at least more than like 5 colors??
Working with hats is VERY limiting on printful and it's making me not even wanna bother with it.

Hey! For 3D Puff, the the design thickness must be between 0.2" (5 mm) and 0.5" (12.5 mm), with at least 0.07" (1.8 mm) of space between the objects, if the thickness is less than that, the 3D Puff option won't appear for the design.
Regarding hats, we appreciate the feedback and will make sure to pass it on to our responsible team! 🙂

@@PrintfulCustomPrinting I was trying to add puff to a bold simple font of text as the ad shows, but it seems impossible.
It seems it's only possible when uploading your own image.
I made the font as big as it would let me and the option never appeared.

Not intuitive. Awful to figure the tools out. For different colors - HOW?
