Critics are really snidy about Oasis and it’s baffling, they just come across as bitter and jealous. The irony is, Oasis generated more opportunities for critics to make money than any other band of that era and they were one of the best bands of all time
Maybe it's because right from their very first single, Oasis ripped off other bands so blatantly that when you listen to an Oasis album all you can do is hear all the bands they have stolen from. If you look at the album credits half of their songs are credited to other songwriters like T Rex, Gary Glitter etc

I love a lot of Oasis songs and it is absolutely true they plagiarised so many other people's ideas/music. Even on this album they pinched stuff from John Lennon, REM, Status Quo and sadly GARY GLITTER 🤭

I will never get why people think "slowly walking down the hall, faster than a cannonball" is a bad lyric, like do people need every lyric to be easily interpreted at face value? I get it, Noel often says even he doesn't know what it means, so people take the piss out of it, but I think its a great lyric.

I see it as cryptic and a typical lyric that is designed to stop and make you think. It's also a trippy song and those are trippy lyrics
It is a great lyric Noel says he doesn't know but he does he just doesn't wanna say it. It's about cocaine. Slowly walking down the hall, faster than a cannonball, where were you when we were getting high? Cmon now 😆 oasis was doing a shit ton of blow in those days. The song is about him missing a girl he left behind so he can be a Rockstar. Now he's partying enjoying the fruits of his labor but he's still bummed out cause he's misses the girl he gave up for this lifestyle. It's all there.
Nearly thirty years later and the press still doesn't get it. The appeal of the first two albums lies in it the subject matter of the songs, the sound, and the working class background the band came from. They became an icon primarily because they were everything a rock and roll band was supposed to be. Chaotic, driven, dedicated to the craft, and creative.
They were popular with average folks because they were relatable. They knew what the day in day out grind life was for working people, and they did everything they could to transcend that and talk about it in their music. That's why it appealed to me as a young man growing up in the states. That's why it appealed to young people everywhere. We were living that life.
The reason the media didn't get it because these trust fund jack offs came from upper middle class or solid middle class backgrounds and never had to deal with the minimum wage grind, poverty, and trying to occupy their spare time with something to give their lives purpose. Comfortability builds complacency. They didn't have the possibility of failure meaning that they'd end back up in a working class slum creeping on their backs. The Oasis lads did. They had to make it work, and this possibility of failure is sometimes what drives us to make a successful future or just fall apart. That's why Be Here Now failed to hold up in general sentiment in the ensuing 90's. The band got comfortable and lost the plot. The media on the other hand realized they missed the ball on the first two records and that's why they gave it such amazing reviews even though the public had clearly didn't see it the same way.

John robb is the only one who consistently talks sense along with the guy from the inspiral carpets, no surprise the two who have actually made music themselves appreciate good music rather than slag it off to seem edgy
Oasis’s first 2 albums are of course absolute classics. But I honestly believe their work after these 2 albums especially from SOTSOG on is criminally underrated
Agree, the next album from standing on the.. to the last album were even had richer and dynamic sounds and song structure than the definitely maybe and what the story era ...
Gem archer and Andy bell even made every songs became more various and technically improving, and the arrangements of various sound instrument more mature and classy.
Really remind me of how the Beatles evolved from one album to another untill they got more psychedelic and complex at their last albums ...
I’m an American who absolutely loves Oasis I am a huge fan of the songs that most Americans don’t know about from Oasis.. I’m sure it’s different in Europe but over here most people only know Wonderwall and Champagne Supernova and of course Live Forever.. but for me it’s Supersonic, Slide Away, Don’t Go Away, Little By Little, Stand By Me, Sunday Morning Call, Stop Crying Your Heart Out, Married With Children, Whatever, Half The World Away, Cigarettes & Alcohol, Rock ’n’ Roll Star, Morning Glory, Shock Of The Lightning, I’m Outta Time, Fuckin’ In The Bushes,TheTurning, and I absolutely love Falling Down and pretty much everything else on what Unfortunately turned out to be the Last Oasis Album Dig Out Your Soul.. it’s a Masterpiece to me!! I guess if I had to choose my 3 favorite songs by them it would be:
#3- Falling Down
#2- Slide Away
#1- Supersonic
SOTSOG is honestly my fav oasis record DF is their best imo but the raw sorta psych vibes of SOTSOG keeps me coming back
Critics hate Oasis because of their working-class origins. If some middle-class nepo baby band had written those songs the critics would say they were 'cleverly re-contextualising the traditional 60s sound into a modern template' - but because they're not that critics pass them off as 'Beatles rip-offs' 😒 (as if loads of other bands haven't based their sound on a combination of lesser-known/appreciated musicians)
I first heard SUPERSONIC in a bar in the Village NYC on a college station and it immediately blew me away! I was playing in a heavy/ punk influenced 90s band but after I got the album my direction was towards melody and songs! A definite game changer 😎🥁🥁
All this video does is prove that the majority of music journalists heads are so far up their own arses that they fail to see or hear what’s in front of them. The lazy inaccuracies alongside the sheer snobbery towards working class people is staggering. Kudos to John Robb and to a slightly lesser extent Paolo Hewitt for keeping it real. Like Oasis or not, to resort to snooty lazy stereotypes is not journalism.

This doc should be called ” why music critics are a waste of space”. I wasn’t the biggest fan at the time but I saw them at glastonbury ”by mistake” and had to admit they were a brilliant live band and Liam was a perfect frontman. I liked this record more than the debut when it came out and now I’m a bit (a lot) older and it’s no longer the 90s I can really appreciate what a great songwriter and what a sharp tack Noel is.
I particularly remember the final scene of the TV series “our friends in the north” when Oasis started playing and it suddenly made sense to me too.
That’s why ‘ Be Here Now ‘ got brilliant reviews from the press all round. Most of them slagged off ‘ What’s the Story ‘ and got it totally wrong that they thought they better not make the same mistake again!! Definitely Maybe is the best album they ever made. It’s one of the best albums anyone’s ever made in my opinion.

He didn't use those exact words but that's what he was alluding to. One of the problems with Oasis was many of their songs went on WAY too long. They were hardly musical geniuses. Who did they think they were? Led Zeppelin?? 😂

Noel in interviews always use to say. "I don't know what the words mean. It's up to each interpretation. Liam also use to say "I don't know what the words mean when I sing the songs". Yet the most successful songs like, Wonder Wall, Don't Look Back in ANGER, Supersonic, Live Forever. Liam dedicates to his mum. Are in my opinion successful because of the WORDS. These are great sounds that stay with people forever. 🎉

Really reminds me of the progressive of each Beatles albums from the first 1st album love me do untill Sgt pepper to let it be which they became more psychedelic and complex...

These guys all hated oasis and wrote them off at the time. They looked down on them as thikko yobs because all journalists ever do is size up other people’s intellect as a way of reaffirming their standing in life.
They are all now really bitter that the band and the album are recognised as cultural giants that penetrated deep bypassing their miserable opinions.

Exactly my thoughts. The 'music critics' here spent the entire documentary calling it an era-defining, anthemic album, yet practically call half of the songs garbage.

Gotta be the best rock n roll 'debut-then-sophomore-followup' albums combo EVER! Definitely Maybe was the fastest selling debut album in the U.K. But what's even more impressive, it also went platinum in the U.S, meaning 1 million+ albums sold, & they pulled that off w/out one, single, solitary Billboard Top 40 single in the country, too! Then, after WTSMG? did 4 million+ albums in the U.K, it also went on to be a quadruple platinum, Billboard Top 10 (#4) album, 4 million+ albums sold, Stateside, too! That thing was just EVERYWHERE!
Unlikely considering Definitely Maybe was vastly superior to Morning Glory. Any album with nonsense like She's Electric, Roll With It and the ridiculously overplayed Wonderwall cannot be held in the same regard.

As an 80s metalhead, I wasn't a fan of Oasis. Now, years later, I can dig them. I especially like to watch their live shows. They were true performers, and I wonder what could have been if they hadn't broken up.

I don't get the comparison of "Don't look back in Anger" with "Imagine". To me they are completely different songs, whatever analogy these "critics" my say.

Not to mention the title is a Bowie nod. It sounds nothing like Imagine. Gallagher did steal a quote from Lennon but was upfront about that.
Oasis was such a fkn force. They Had something for everyone and had some mega tunes on the first three albums. After that mainly misses. Some on sotsog were good

The real irony is oasis we’re working class oiks from the north, and that’s not the the press wanted until they got it. Then they tried to backtrack about it, for me the main irony is that if oasis came around today in our super over sensitive society they’d be even bigger, working class kids from a poor and abused family and make it big, they’d be the biggest band on the planet….. again.
Their first two albums are incredible. Everything else sounds muddy and repetitive to me, unfortunately. I always loved their pure, unadulterated rock n' roll attitude, so they get my respect even if I don't love their music!

Morning Glory should have been a double album or released in two parts, including the B-sides. Obviously they were released on the Masterplan album but that was 3 years too late.
I understand why songs like the Masterplan, talk tonight and Half the world away weren’t on the album. They’re good enough but didn’t really fit. So a double album with two different vibes would have been perfect

"Be here Now" is both my brother's and I favorite Oasis album. People shitting on it because the culture changed and they simply don't listen to music objectively. Oasis moaning about their fans becoming hooligans and violent at their gigs is dumb on their part. At the time there wasn't a week that went by that we didn't read about Liam getting into a fight or some kind violence within their band. Is it any surprise they started to attract thugs to their music? Really?
A glittering example of why critics are maligned by fans and musicians alike. "Definitely, Maybe" was one hell of an album and put them on the British map but "Morning Glory" was next level and put them on the global one, outselling more than 2 to 1. No, it wasn't as edgy or anthemic, nor was it more creative. But the fans LOVED it, especially here in America. Scarcely a week goes by where I don't blast "Champagne Supernova".
Morning Glory was way more anthemic than Definitely Maybe.

Also, I love the Dodgy lads, but Nigel casting a disparaging eye over NG’s plagiaristic tendencies was a bit much in light of the similarities between Dodgy’s “In A Room” and The Who’s b-side “Dogs”.

Oasis were continually beaten down by the critics because they “ripped off” so many of their musical heroes. But yet if it was so easy to do then why hasn’t anybody done it like them since? Oh there’s been the odd band/solo artist that will try but Oasis had something that they don’t . It’s an intangible thing that all the great acts had. The dichotomy of the Gallagher Bros would be the main thing but they just connected with so many people. The songs and the whole cult around the Gallaghers. The British music press have always been mainly middle class, university educated and they absolutely hate people like Oasis somehow reaching to the masses while their niche, outlier artists remain unheard. Being popular isn’t a bad thing, especially if you stick to your guns like Oasis did. They’ve been a massive influence on my own music and many others. The fact that they’ve never really changed can be viewed as laziness by some or honesty by others.

There were three, arguably, amazing rock albums of the 90's .... Nevermind, Ok Computer and Morning Glory..... But Morning Glory meant the most to so many people cos it was actually a celebratory positive record stacked full of fun, confidence, sensitivity and joy and was the perfect album for teenager at the time getting into music. Oasis were so famous, successful and had the tunes to back it all up and that's why so many kids are digging the band now after all these years cos there simply isn't anything like it now, as Bonehead recently said 'there sadly won't be anything like a band like Oasis again, not with such impact and appeal'.
