Ethernet Switch Upgrade - Netgear GS208 to Netgear GS108E

- After nine months my Netgear GS208 8 port ethernet switch died. I was unable to get connected to the internet in my main office for a day or so because of it.
I opted for the Netgear GS108E instead. This 8 port ethernet switch offers many additional features and has metal housing instead of the plastic housing the GS208 used.

I added this switch to my AV system, and OMG! I never realized how dirty the power is over ethernet. Not the 1's and 0's, but the current carrying the 1's and 0's. This switch cleaned all of that up and then some. The picture quality of the TV improved, as did the sound on the $150 Polk sound bar. Even my 80yo mother noticed the improvement. If you stream your audio or video, spend the $42 and get one of these switches. This is the same switch these high dollar audio companies use in their $500+ "audiophile" switches, sneaky bastards. ;-) The switch I bought was the GS108Ev3, get this one.
Nice review thanks
You're welcome.
Hi there, Great to hear a Celtic voice. Do you connect to a router as well please as you don't explain how you are connected but you do show lots of Ethernet connected cables? Thank you in advance Aindre
I connected this to my power line adapter as it has two ethernet ports. You can also connect directly to the router, to wall ethernet ports, access points, mesh access points etc.
Hi, where can I find that comparative table? I thought that PLUS was superior to PRO.
I found it on the official website.
@@KevinMuldoon Thank you, have been fast O..o
What do you mean you couldn’t get an IP address on the old switch? 1:14 The IP address is given out by your router, not your switch? The new switch will have an IP address and be able to give out IP addresses because it is managed. The old (unmanaged) one doesn’t give out or have an IP address? Did you check your router after the storm, in case the settings had been reset somehow and dhcp was off?
If I remember right, the old switch would assign different local IPs for each port, but it stopped doing that and I wasn't able to resolve it.
@@KevinMuldoon GS208 is an unmanaged switch, so has no IP address. Not sure if you mean DHCP wasnt working, but covered that above - so still confused
I'm not sure myself. I recorded this video years ago 😁
Hi is it safe to have one of these? The reason I asked is because I saw another video where the guy said these have no encryption or spy wear protection.
Yeah it's just a basic network switch.
I'm not a network security guy, but I assumed that security would take place elsewhere. Like before the router or integrated with it.
Thank you. So what is the point of this device. I have the white one you showed in the video. I'm debating on keeping it or sending it back to Amazon.
@@praysja1 I tend to use 5-port unmanaged network switches around the house so I can connect multiple devices via ethernet. This switch is managed, which gives you more control.
For example, you can create virtual LANs, disable ports and prioritise traffic and connections.
I have a 24-port managed switch next to my router. I don't use all of its security features, but I do close ports to prevent unauthorised access.
For example, the ports that lead to my television and Xbox etc, are not permitted to access any devices connected to other ports. Also, no devices connected to other ports are allowed to access the port which connects to my main PC.
@@KevinMuldoon thanks man seriously that was super helpful 👌🏾
another warranty claim awaiting :D Mine is another SSD on 25% life, made of cheese I swear.
😎
Is the ip address if this switch in the same range as your router?. It’s might be 192.168.1.xxx I got mine and it had a completely different range and subnet?
are all 8 portS 1GB PORTS?
Yes they're all gigabit

I've never had any problems with it. Always worked great for me.
