Hi there, can I connect this switch to a WIFI extender so I can use my laptop around the house and in the yard?
@@asianthor No not via WiFi.
@@asianthor pp0p0o
I know it's bin a hot minut, but isn't this a store and forward switch? i can't tell from the datasheet. the NETGEAR GS308E is one. so why did you choose this one instead of a cut-through if you want to have a shorter delay or the best performance?
Got one the other day and easy as you have shown here. I wasn't sure I wanted to do this at first, but now I plan to upgrade down the road to 16 port. Glad to also see it seems to run on the cooler end and not heat up very much if at all. Great product and recommend to anyone who is starting out with expansion.
Clear, to the point and helpful. Purchased one, thanks! Exactly what I needed.
Thanks for the comment, good to hear the video helped.
This made more sense then the instructions sent. THANK YOU.
Vocal videos are the best. Companies should actually supply QR codes pointing buyers to video vocal instructions.
Thank you sir. Even though I had a good idea on how to connect the GS305, having a visual gives me peace of mind. Thanks again!
Very straightforward instructions. Thank you
Great vid plain and simple explanation just what I needed. Thank you ! 🤗
You're welcome!
Just connected mine today. Working well so far!
Excellent video man thanks!
I got this today with my other orders, it seems good, you don't even have to use the app to register it like it says. I got it because I had 2 100ft ethernets running through my house for my PC/PS5. Now I only use one 100ft cable to connect my router to the netgear, then I connected my PC, PS5, PS4, PS3, and PSTV to the other ports. Works.
So in my room I have an Ethernet Port which is connected to the modem on the other side of the house (wires run through the roof) I was wondering if I could connect a switch to the Ethernet port in my room then connect my computer and ps4 to the switch ?
Yes that should work
What would be the upgrade to this unit. For higher then a gig? I currently have gig speed plan and am hoping Comcast brings there gig pro plan to my area soon @ 2.5 gigs 🤤.
Any advice as I've just bought an 8 port netgear and I've plugged it in to my router and when I'm plugging anything else to the other ports I'm not getting Internet, it's supposed to be plug and play
Do you know if you can plug one of these into another one of these to get 13 accessory ports?
Thanks for the confirmation that network in goes in port 1, which is what I needed!
Okay there's one thing I don't understand if you have one end of the ethernet cable plugged into the router and then the other end plugged into the multiport then how are you getting internet service?? Cuz mine I have my ethernet cable plugged into the wall go into the router but if I unplug the end that is plugged into the wall then how am I going to get service from my router? I don't know if this makes sense but it's hard for me to understand this video because all that is is a multi-port connector it's not a router
Is the switch wall-mounting able and how does it work?
Can i use this directly from modem isp to the switch? Or i should use router first before this switch?
Odd question, but do you know the size of the screw hole diameter?
Thanks
Very clear. Jargon free. Thanks Geek Street
👍
Thanks for the advise, now I understand what to do now. 👍
Thanks good to hear the video helped.
My modem connects to the router stilll and router to switch ? I want to move the wireless router closer to the living room instead of in the bedroom, what would be the best play in this situation? Thnk you very much for your help 🙏🏼
Are you able to upgrade the firmware on it? If so how?
Top bit of kit like other Netgear switches
Well done on the step by step process of installing it.
104 Haters probably not speaking English.
Can I run this off of another gig speed switch? My modem / router is in the basement with a 16 port gig switch. I ran one Cat6 cable form the (other switch in the basement) upstairs and was going to use the switch for my other devices. Rather then running 6 cable from the basement to the upstairs.
Yes you can do that
i dont see the recessed button for factory reset! any idea?
Need help!!
I have just bought one it works fine on my pc but it doesnt work on my ps5 becausew it takes to long to obtain the IP adress
Can a network switch be plugged into a Ethernet wall outlet rather than directly into a router?
is there a way to change my speed of my network? Using the switch i am getting about 90 mbps but if i wire directly from my router i get about 800 mbps.
Thanks a lot. You helped me out with the setup
No problem 👍
so my router is in the other room, but i have a CAT5 outlet in my room that i can plug an ethernet cable into to get wired connection. Am I able to run the ethernet cord from my CAT5 outlet in my room to the switch and still get good connection?
Yes that will work, thats exactly how I use it.
Nice Timing!
Almost bought this last night, but went with the 16-port instead (GS316). 👍😎
Hey Greg, even I got the GS316 16-port switch. I am not able to connect to internet. When I connect my modem and my laptop to the switch, it shows no internet connection. After troubleshooting, I got the error "IP address not configured". Can you help?
@@technicalwriterpune It's just a switch...the IP address should be handed out by your router. Check that you can get an IP if you connect directly to the router.
@@gregdalton3517 hey thanks! I got the issue resolved. Multiple restarts of laptop and switch got it resolved. But still my firestick wont get connected to the switch. It asks for IP Address.
I have 4 plugged into the switch but only 2 are green and the others are blank! What did I do wrong?
Very helpful thank you
Great to hear it helped!
This one no need reset switch?
Hi Great video , can I just ask a quick question please , will this connect straight to my virgin media superhub 3 , is this compatible? . If so will I require to do anything else or is it simply plug and play , many thanks .
Yes that will work
Thanks boss!
anyone knows how good it performs under heavy load like 5 ports constant work? i know some other (Tenda) switches can crash and need to be restarted.
Yes works well.
great tutorial
Does it matter which port you use for the router cable? In the quick manual, it shows port 5 (without any explanation).
No it doesn't matter
Can I also plug this into an regular extension lead without any surge protection because the power adapter isn't long enough to stretch to the wall socket.?
Should in general be fine.
Thanks for the quick response ...You earned another subscriber..Keep up the good work...
@@xboxgamer7453 thanks for the support!
I'm looking into using one of these for my room in our new house, I'm thinking of connecting a new cheap Wifi Access Point, my PS4, PC and PS3 (and fire tv stick to the wifi), does unmanaged make any difference in a non-commercial environment?
Makes no difference, it just provides additional ports.
@@GeekStreet Thanks!
Thank you.
Nice review, however you didn't comment about the leds colors which were specified above the ports (green/yellow depending of the port speed). That's a useful feature on SWs, so you'll know besides the fact the port is linking @ what speed is working the port. Also it's pretty useful to have these leds indicators @ the front of the SW and not behind, like other SWs have been designed like Linksys LGS105 and LGS108, for example.
308 has no link light speed indications. Always green if connected, bummer. the 108 does.
Thanks
I can all devices place tplink???
Thank you
Nice video just asking looking in getting a switch but just seen this one GS308 and also GS308E do you know the difference between them ? Cheers
Thanks for the comment the E is a managed switch where you can manage each port. Only required if you want to do more advanced things. Generally no need to buy that....keep it simple.
Geek Street oh yes easy is best ok so don’t want the E what’s the newest 8 port netgear switch as there is a few with different numbers gs308 ? Thank you
Is it possible to have the the internet connection directly connected to the switch and THEN connected to a wired router provided by ISP company? The idé is to connect a PC directly to the switch and a wireless router connected to the wired router. Could you possibly, please do a video about configuration of the switch to assign static IP for the PC and the wired router in my case? Can t find useful guidance about that on the internet. Many thanks.
No generally your router takes the signal from the provider and gives the Internet ports plus wifi and you connect the switch directly to it.
Geek Street So in my case the modem and the router provided by the ISP is integerated into one device. There is no WIFI on that device. The connection should then be internet cable from the wall -> router->switch. Is this correct? At the moment I have a internet cable from the wall->switch->router->another router forcWIFI connection. Also, from the switch goes a internet cable to a PC. This setup is working. Just want to get the most out of the internet connection to the PC. Using the PC for future trading.
This video is great! My only problem is i'm using a laptop in my room which does not need an ethernet cable but runs on wifi, the internet rooter is placed in the living room, so there's no way i can use it. Is there another way of doing it? If so yes, i would appreciate anyones help.
You should get an ethernet adapter or hub like this ua-cam.com/video/N2IAEsJZasY/v-deo.html
Thank you, just got 1,the green lights keep flashing
I wanted the 16 port but it's too much of a beast for a SOHO LOL
does the red wire have to go into port 1 or can go anywhere?
Any port

While the switch connected to LAN port on the router , can I run a cat 6 cord from the switch to other side of the house and plug it to a second router to expand WIFI coverage with regards to the IP address , DHCB server , and default gateway configurati9n ?
Yes you can do that and it will use you dhcp service running on you router.
@@GeekStreet ok , and can I have 2 routers connected to the same switch ? I did connect 2 routers to the switch ( so I have total of 3 accesspoints around the house now , one from the main router and 2 from secondary routers) all work fine except for one of the secondary routers , when I connect the wifi from cell phone to that router I face a problem of disconnected wifi after certain time ( 10-20 minutes) and It reconnects again to the same router like normally.
@@alialhosani7994 do you use google home?
@@GeekStreet no I dont use google home .
@@GeekStreet while writing last reply I put that router in bridge mode, and I now no longer have access to the router's IP which was assigned to it out of IP pool of main router , but same problem still exist.
did it come with cables that you used to plug in to laptop?
No
How do I know which version I have?? Nothing is on the box. Version 1 , 2, or 3.
It's on the device itself - the label on the back above where the serial number is shown.
Are you still using this or have you upgraded? What would you recommend?
I'm still using it, works perfectly for my needs.
can this be used for PoE security camera systems?..
Yes you can connect the nvr but it cant connect the cameras to give power to the cameras.
@@GeekStreet Ahh alright. Im from the UK, and trying to get a good PoE switch to put into my loft then run an ethernet cable upto it.
Check this out:
ua-cam.com/video/s3am5dhnB4A/v-deo.html
Great video. Except for making me needlessly answer my front door....lol
😳😭
If I have an ethernet thingy on my wall, can I connect the switch to that? Will it still work the same?
yes that should work.
@@GeekStreet Oh great. Thx for the quick reply. Can't wait to have faster speeds on my devices.
You're welcome!
@@GeekStreet Also, do you know of an ethernet switch that has usb on it? Not all the things I own have an ethernet port.
@@bens2248 no sorry not come across that.
Does it support WAN/ internet in? Or just LAN switching?
(I mean no router direct from fiber converter) Are there any web dashboard for this switch?
This is an unmanaged switch so it has no web interface.
Do all the devices have to be in the same room?
No you could run a long cable into another room.
No speed test? Why?
Is possible lose performance in game or streaming?
Only if your Internet connection is poor.
Support POE ? for cameras? etc
No for POE you can use this ua-cam.com/video/s3am5dhnB4A/v-deo.html
@@GeekStreet Thank you for link and comment 😊👍
@@captnjaygreybeard6394 you're welcome!
I have wifi. Not using a router. I just got an internet cord to connect to my laptop. With plugging this into my laptop and then into the switch - will this create a hard wired wifi connection? Thanks.
I guess you must have a portable internet access point that has a ethernet point. If you plug this into the switch you can have multiple wired connections
@@GeekStreet What is a portable internet access point? I have no idea what you are talking about.
@@delenegillen539 I'm trying to understand what your describing, a bit confusing.
@@GeekStreet What happens if you just plug in a blue ethernet cord to your laptop in the telephone slot and then plug the other end into the ethernet network switch? Does this created a hard wired connection for your wifi?
@@delenegillen539 no thats not going to work.
so an 8 ports switch is really able to be used by 7 devices, correct?
Yes thats right
Hello Guys,
I have a question. If I put 2 Cables in 2 Ports, are both going to have a 1 gigabit speed? Or is it going to be 500 per Cable?
Exemple:
Me and my brother want to Play on our PCs, both Cables are connected to this Switch, are we both going to have a gigabit speed or both 500mbits?
1 Gigabit per port. Whole switch has 16 Gb/s switching capacity so theoretically it should give you 1Gbps up/down on every port even when all 8 ports are used.
No yellow lights = very good :)
So, since you have to use 1 port to connect to the internet, you really only get 7 ports, correct???
Yes
Do you know if it works well with the Sky Q Hub router?
Yes should be fine.
Cheers mate. Great video btw.
@@oobenoob Thanks mate, much appreciated.
have mine using sky
why with the doorbell?
why with the 09 ?
GS308, GS308E, GS308T All with very different software features and even physical characteristics. e.g. Where did the wall mount holes go on the "T" variant? I'm not even sure whether there are differences between the 308 and 108 series. Seriously Netgear, stop disabling features to artificially bring the cost down, reduce your range, and introduce some sensible naming scheme
Yeah its quite confusing.
Didn't answer the one question I had.... Where does it plug in TO your router?
It plugs into any ethernet port on your router.
I guess mine is just broken....great.
Having power and Ethernet ports on opposite sides is a deal breaker
Setup?
Nothing to configure.
Paper work:pluck em to the side
Your video contains about 30 seconds of useful info.
I dont like the door bell. It rings i feel that I had to open my door.
Same with me. Sounds silly but I'm expecting a pkg that I have to sign and when your doorbell rings, I have to check my door. Anyhow, thanks for great video.
I don't like the ethernet ports on the front of the device. I make it more difficult to do cable management.
got one of these but its not 8 ports its 7 as input port shouldnt be counted, all the pics i saw made me believe input would go in back and have 8 outputs and would make install neater also, but yeah does work ok but not made clear by netgear what getting.
that's exactly what i thought
Rooter? 😆
No Hooter 😂🤣
Damn I can't believe how many people are here looking for instructions on how to set it up........you literally just plug it in.
plugs a few ethernet cables in and calls it a setup video.
because its just that simple to set up as there is no software to install. it's plug and play. Nothing to setup or configure
Answer the damn door.
i just purchase did not work
Must be faulty, get it replaced.
Didn't buy this item
?
Why
Poor man's switch, avoid it if you're serious about networks.
These are aimed at general household use. Why would general households who are connecting maybe a PS4 a PC and a couple of other bits need to be 'serious' about networks?
OMG Any damn monkey can open a freaking box
I did see your orginal comment and noticed you have changed it now...you stated that I didn't show how to configure and setup the device. I clearly mentioned there NOTHING to configure. I guess you didn't watch the whole video to understand that. Hence the pointless comment and very easy to make hiding behind a computer. I wonder if you will respond to this comment I'm guessing not, as that will just embarrass you. I wasn't going to bother responding but alway entertaining highlighting people like you.
@@GeekStreet might be because the documention says use the app to set up, but thats only to register the device but i downloaded that first also as thats what quick start says.
so much useless information. if someone cant already read what's on the box then they don't belong loose in public or on the internet
I checked my front door like 10 times.
