I think the poison they typically use is pellets that transforms into phosgene gas. They probe the ground and the burrows are detected with the probe. They then drop the pellets and seal the hole. Moisture in the ground causes the pellets to turn to phosgene gas. Anyway that is what someone told me. Although it is pretty nasty for the gopher, I don’t think the bird will be poisoned in any significant way.
