It's time for the Revamp of the third entry in this stellar series, I present you, Double Dragon III: The Sacred Stones! Often cited as the black sheep of the three NES titles, primarily due to its incredibly hard difficulty. Which yes is a bit much on this title, but taking the patience to master how the enemies work and how to fight makes this a satisfying one to complete. Technos Japan knows how to give us fantastic and colorful looking graphics, as this is certainly the best looking of the three, along with traversing unique locations and introducing gain-able characters to switch between, they certainly pushed what they could for this entry. But even to those that can't get down with the gameplay, one of the most praised aspects about this game is the Soundtrack! All the tracks still have that Double Dragon energy and I could even call this one the best OST of the original trilogy, each Mission and Boss theme fitting the tone of each stage and the sound design is just absolutely top notch!
Now one of the most interesting aspects of this game, is the fact it's not directly a port of its Arcade version, Double Dragon 3: The Rosetta Stones, but in fact this game was developed simultaneously with the Arcade version, and is more so a parallel project, making this NES version unique in various aspects, its only true similarities is sharing the same Plot, and of course, a majority of the music. There are actually a few unique tracks on this NES version, but while there is also an official release of Track Titles from this entry on the "DOUBLE DRAGON SOUND COLLECTION VOL.1", sadly certain tracks are copied directly from where they appeared in the Arcade version, or likely what was heard on the official release of the Arcade soundtrack under "Double Dragon 3 / The Combatribes", which makes certain tracks incorrect to what is associated with them on this version due to unique differences from the Arcade and NES version. So certain Titles have been changed to reflect more accurately what is on this NES version. This is still a good game and high quality soundtrack, so whichever of the Three NES games are your favorite, you always have a bangin' OST to have with it! ;)
While this entry had classic Double Dragon 1 & 2 composer Kazunaka Yamane absent from the project, in his place, we have Akira Inoue & Takaro Nozaki, who were also responsible for the Arcade version's music. Considering the Arcade and NES versions were being developed at the same time, it is likely there credits here on this version are still accurate to having composed for this version as well, as there are unique tracks to this ports. Michiya Hirasawa is a very recognizable name for anyone that has looked into the Technos Japan sound team, as Hirasawa is responsible for the Sound Driver for the company and his Driver's sound is recognizable to anyone that has played a Technos game. Hirasawa has been responsible for compositions on certain titles, but usually if he was the only Sound person working on it, and was usually credited because of his Sound Driver being used, Hirasawa is likely responsible for Arranging the compositions by Inoue and Nozaki, but has never been cited as an Arranger, and likely contributed to the Sound Programming as well, as he did on for a majority of Technos titles. And finally we have the credit for Yoshihiro Kameoka, who was usually credited for the "Sound Program" on Technos titles, likely assisting Hirasawa on the sound programming of this title, as this entry certainly has the tightest sound of all three Double Dragon games. A shame we don't have exact attributions to who did what, so all names are credited under "Composer" as they are in the Staff Roll, but I'm glad these 4 lads still got credit on this game!
Hope you all enjoyed this Revamp, it's nice getting soundtracks out more consistently! A big thanks to all you Patron supporters, if you'd like to join Tiers 2 or 3 to be featured just follow the link here to my Patreon, thank you all so much and enjoy the tunes!

Game was tough as nails indeed. It's a brawler that's as unforgiving as your average Soulsbourne. Not having any lives and having to manage your characters as well as special weapons really went a long way. Having Renzou around for the jumps in Egypt was almost a necessity. Forget playing this on an emulator compared with a badly configured LCD, any kind of input lag and you're toast. Nevertheless, we still managed to beat it half of the time.
Thanks a lot for this great sound mix, sounds fantastic. The soundtrack really did a great job carrying you through the game and is where it shines compared to DD2. Shout out to Dragonforce of course for the Black Fire guitar solo.

Still the best way to play Double Dragon 3. The arcade game had microtransactions! Technos Japan would sell their license to anyone and everyone who would pay enough, so quality was bound to drop at some point. This is definitely a game where you will wipe on the first stage multiple time before it clicks. And when it does click it's glorious.
Or you're doing 2 player and you master the double spin kick, that works too.

Wow that is both ahead of its time yet sad something like that happened this early, but at the same time, Technos had balls to do that, even though it clearly didn't pan out as they eventually went bankrupt. I will also say the NES version beats the Arcade versions soundtracks by miles, these songs just sound so much better on the NES soundchip!

I must have been 8 years old when I played this game. Had to use Game Genie to beat it! The main antagonist, Hiruko, was interesting. The lines about her fate always stuck with me as a kid:
“You see, in her haste to obtain power, Hiruko made a mistake that cost her her life.”
“She was not the first, and won’t be the last, to let greed for power ruin their life.”
Amazing how those simple things you read in childhood stick with you forever!

In the arcade, you get to see what happens to her. She sets off one of the traps when she reaches for the treasure and it burns her to a crisp. Never let greed get the best of you.

OMG, I remember this guy from the Early days of UA-cam. He's truly one of the original streamers of UA-cam. I use to religiously watch his I wanna be the guy and resident evil videos. They were Funny as heck to. Specially the part in I wanna be the guy where he was fighting that big Dragon on a block platform, Noooo!! lol. Salute to Mr. Niko, but you will always be the wiiguy309 to me 😭😭😭. Excuse my long winded babbling. But Im happy to see you are doing well.

Haha that is incredible, I feel only a few people I still keep in contact with from my early youtube days remember that stuff, it certainly was an era of my life where I thought I would be a Let's Player, I will say those videos are not entirely lost, but it is a cringe era of mine I don't mind leaving behind. I am doing good and with this series of 8BitStereo which is my true calling, hope you enjoy what I got here! :)

Or in an alternate universe, 1 & 2 sucked, and 3 was the good one, with Billy instead of Bimmy being the only thing wrong with it (watch AVGN's Beranstain Bears episode to know what I mean).

A very nostalgic game for me, and one of our childhood achievements. I can almost smell the sensation of beating it back then.
Love the sprite work here, the music is great and often offers more than one track per level. Thanks for the update.

Some of the USA, Italy, and Egypt tunes were Akira Inoue's, and "To the Dragon World", " The Way of Sousetsuken", "To the Children in the World", and the China and Japan tunes were Takaro Nozaki's.

    • @Nikos8BitStereo
      @Nikos8BitStereo  4 місяці тому +2

I did find the vgmdb forum thread about it, I just wish there was more confirmation of the entire OST, and I'm sure Inoue and Nozaki composed the NES versions of them, but it really tickles me what Yoshihiro Kameoka's role was as he's the most unknown, but for the sake of consistency of the whole text on this video I just credited them all as such due to the unconfirmed nature of most of the OST, hopefully we will get more confirmed info in the future! :)

Should I create a headcannon where Niko is the third Lee brother? Bimmy, Jimmy, and… Nikky? 😮
BTW, while yes, this game is hard as balls, I agree, the music is kickass, especially the stage 1 theme. Thank you Niko! ❤

To stay true with the engrish here, I would have to be "Nimmy", gotta follow in Bimmy Lee's footsteps!

I have seen your push for such a possibility, but for the sake of consistency with my series, and my already busy life/schedule, I will continue to work with my Mix indefinitely with these Revamps, I would definitely say if anyone wants to do their own kind of mix with these soundtracks to start with my NSFe Collection and do what they feel.
