I want both snare drums and a Gretsch USA Bell Brass Snare Drums. Both DW drums have a very different voice and I very much like your decisions as to how to change the sound and heel of a DW snare. Taking away the thick layer of interior lacquer was a HUGE thank you from me. I never really understood their choice with that, particularly with deeper shelled snares (brightens timbre) . The change with snare beds was helpful for a better response. I prefer eight lugs to ten as it is a more open sound and feel although I like a ten lug sound from time to time. Your choices were spot on and I want that snare! Take my wallet already! But seriously, thank you for the collaboration with DW. If possible, please do more collaboration with them and other drum, cymbal, percussion, hardware, drumhead, and etc manufacturers. Love you guys!
The perfect custom design here! Great and smart moves on all points! Because of this video, I am NOW in the market for a new snare(hopefully the wife doesn't find out! 😉)! Hehehe
Glad you were able to make this comparison and get DW to experiment. I’ve never been a fan of DW in general and I’ve played a ton of their kits in rehearsal studios and with backlines. I like some of their snares but this drum with 8 lugs and a thin shell is great. The tone is way more prominent in all tunings. The 30 strand wires make it sound wet, full and meaty. Is the mini-mag a more sensitive, versatile throw? Bravo.
Both snare drums are good, my personal preference is the exotic, I like it’s open tone and high crisp top end. The new drum does have a nice bottom end to it, but it sounds more like a brass drum in the mix too me. Thanks for making this and asking the question!
the good ol' 10+6 works...probably not my absolute favourite but it's good it's thing. Having said that, you guys are onto something with this combo....defintely hear some musicality and body that isn't normally there on a DW regular collector's wood snare. very interesting and nice offer to consider with a more resonant and "woody" snare shell...bravo
8 lugs vs 10 lugs .. I believe allows the drum to breathe more. This may inevitably add a little more bottom end. Deeper snare beds and 30 strand wires will just enhance snare articulation. Beautiful sounding snare.
Love it!! The 10+6 have more heaviness on the sound but this one sounds more open and warm , love how the shell reacts without the clear lacquer inside !!
Congrats, guys! It's not every day anyone gets to release an entirely new snare drum let alone a dw one! Absolutely killer snare! As always, Shane is right, kids: less lugs equals more tone. Brilliant concept! And us, musicians now can buy a jack of all trades of a snare drum! Kudos! Cheers from Brazil! 😷
This Snare sounds GREAT to me....Love how it pops with the room mics only. The sound reminds of John Stanier's snare on Helmet's Meantime record, which was mixed my Andy Wallace to have a wood meets metal vibe. Oh, btw.... I bought one yesterday and it's on the way! THANKS guys! Really digging all the content too....
That's very cool that you had the idea to collaborate with DW - and it came out great. I still prefer the good old 10+6 formula - I like the attack - that note or point to the sound that helps when recording and projecting live. Anyway, I dig the Custom Profile - it's kind of Dunnett-Like!
Great sounding drum!. Stays nice and full at low and high tunings(I'd like to hear it at an even lower tuning). What heads did you use?. Ambassadors ?.......I think the Custom Profile sounds a little more open than the Exotic, with a little more articulation from the snares. This is probably due in part to having 30 strand instead of 20. What do deeper snare beds generally do??. One thing I've been wondering about. I'm seeing more people opting to not have or remove the rubber gaskets on lug casings. Rubber gaskets are meant to let the shell resonate more freely. What's the theory behind not using them?. I usually prefer to have less lugs.
I have a 14x6 Collectors, and a 14x6.5 Performance, and the Performance series snare has more bottom at higher tunings. Although that snare is .5” deeper. Anyway, nice sounding custom you have there.
MAN, I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE THAT DIDN'T LIKE DW SNARE DRUMS ... BUT, THIS ONE ... IS WHAT GOD'S ANGELS USE WHEN YOU ARRIVE INTO HEAVEN 🙏 ALL OF MY CUSTOM SNARES ARE IN 8-LUG, AND THIS VIDEO PROVES EXACTLY WHY :D
The exotic had a drier profile IMO. That dcp snare definitely had more crack and back end to it. Just depends on your preference. I like my snare a bit dry but both are phenomenal.
Love how this snare sounds and I’m not really a fan of DW snare drums! What other snares would you recommend that sounds closely to this one? Wood of course
It's a sliding scale, we start with the low tuning by finding the lowest tuning we can get before it bottoms out. Then we find a nice medium and then a nice high, it changes from drum to drum. The wires are typically looser on the lower tunings and a little tighter on the higher tunings, but it doesn't change all that much.
I never really liked DW wood snares either - nothing really 'stood out' for me. Not a lot of body - but compared to the ten lug exotic, your custom profile really hits the mark. Wow! Still a Sonor guy though. Sonor first, Tama second.
I can completely understand the need for a customized snare. I am still waiting on the delivery of my 7 ply 12x7 wenge/birch shell in Ludwig's classic maple wood grain orientation.
I'm personally not much of a fan of DW in general. I find them to be too heavy in the low end and not enough "character" that I get from other manufacturers. Their snares are amazing though, and I have one model, a 14x6.5 Oak, that goes with me to every session and quite a few gigs because it just works well with any style or any room I'm in. I don't really like their kits as much because they just don't have the high end transience that really fills out the sound. I'm with you, on needing bottom end with high tunings.
Unfortunately, i'm not a fan of this custom snare. It's not bad, just not great. I've had two DW custom snares that I've loved (but totally know what you mean about the bottom end). I'll stick with the DW for wood (or my Pearl maple freefloater) snare. But you turned me on to Dunnett Titanium, which i'll have to look into and possibly buy when I'm back in the States. It is, so far, my favorite snare that you have showcased.
I prefer the vlt over the 8 lug creation and over a 10&6. The maple vlt is resonant and full enough for me. Though certain rooms/ auditoriums calls for the 10&6 or edge.
DW snares just dont do it for me , never have , Pearl is my choice , Mapex 2nd etc every DW I have tried i ended up selling , I want a deep deep snare with loads of bottom
I am sorry however I think you could have done better with this kind of opportunity with DW. Still a mediocre sounding snare. However I totally agree with deeper snare bed good point on that part=)
@@drumcenternh I think the way that dw does their shells they are very stiff even if you get them really thin they dont really sound that low like other companies at that thickness. This is my opinion by the way=)
That side by side comparison at the end.. Your model is more open, more room in the drum. Sounds so much better. More personality! Fantastic!
Totally agree!
The DW custom profile sounds just amazing, preordering one now!!!!
This recipe reminds me of one of my favorites.... THE MAPLE from Canopus. Love it

Same throw, less mass.

Love the new snare, sounds great!!
Glad you like it!
I am a DW fan, but also not crazy about their snares. That said...this one I like. Well done.
Their wood snares seem kind of thin sounding in a bunch of sample videos.
Love it!! The 10+6 have more heaviness on the sound but this one sounds more open and warm , love how the shell reacts without the clear lacquer inside !!
It's definitely more open sounding!
Please do a video on a DW performance series kit

Andy Wallace is the man! Congrats on picking one of these up, they are KILLER drums!
John Stanier is in my top 5. Meantime was a game-changer for me.
The room mix gave a much more realistic representation of each tuning. 🤙🏽

nice ,,,,,,,,,,sounds great .....
Awesome video guys! Would love a gretsch snare shootout! COB...Hammered Brooklyn COB, full range rosewood...ect.
Nice! This sound reminds me DCP 10th anniversary Snare made of Tulip wood by Ludwig that I wanted to have.
Would love to hear DW’s Solid Maple Shell with the same features of the DCP designed snare. Get on that will ya ….
Congratulations. Y'all made DW make a Canopus snare lol
Definitely need to get more of these in stock
More on order now!
So essentially you got DW to make you a Dunnett snare? ;) Kidding :D Sounds great Shane!
I like the exotic in the end. Just bought a maple dw snare in 13" love it!
I like the thin shell, but with 10 lugs, then add the 30 strand wires.. I like the regular size throw off, but I like single lugs in the centre
I LOVE it!
As a guy who builds his own drums i prefer snares with slightly deeper snare beds and 8 lugs myself. Good job!
Great job Shane, subtle changes but the proof is in the sound. Can you order in other sizes?
Sure can!
nice custom sound;both are great;like the exotic wood finish, but the custom sounded great. What would S -copeland think(fav drummer)?
i like re-rings. especially those on the classic series. just because.

The exotic had a drier profile IMO. That dcp snare definitely had more crack and back end to it. Just depends on your preference. I like my snare a bit dry but both are phenomenal.
The 10&6 is definitely drier. Both drums sound great, just whatever sounds better to you!
Sounds great! Which edges did you request on this drum?

The Canopus "The Maple" is one to definitely consider! www.drumcenternh.com/canopus-the-maple-10ply-snare-drum-14x6-5-w-cast-hoops-natural-oil

SImilar to the Ludwig Classic Maple snare with 7 plies. Ludwig is the best snare drum maker for the $400-$750 range player.
When is DW Gonna set out them Slingerland Drums
Can you give some specifics on your definition of low, medium, and high tuning. Are you changing the throw off of doing it on the lugs ?
It's a sliding scale, we start with the low tuning by finding the lowest tuning we can get before it bottoms out. Then we find a nice medium and then a nice high, it changes from drum to drum. both snare sound good, but your snare sound more open ,lighter and airier sound. more tone. much like a canopus the maple snare.
All great points and thank you!
Just call it the DCPDWCPSD for short
It's like.... if Ludwig made a snare for dw
How much is it? I’m very interested 👍🏻
Link is in the description!
I like this one better, by far!
Not overly priced for a DW snare...however, give me the Tama SLP G maple 13x 7” anyday...
Less expensive too....about half the price...
Lots of high overtones, not for me.
I'm a Purple Heart lover!
Yours has more low end. and got rid of some harsh high end the original DW snare had.
That´s DW take on Canopus recipe then? :)

And losing the gaskets for lugs--this is what INDe drum snares and drums do.
Ludwig should take a tip from this and remove the tone sucking gaskets from their metal snares. Big difference.
DW snares just dont do it for me , never have , Pearl is my choice , Mapex 2nd etc every DW I have tried i ended up selling , I want a deep deep snare with loads of bottom
I literally hate DW. Never liked anything besides the NOB snare...
But this thing seems kinda nice.
It just doesn't sound like a DW at all.
I am sorry however I think you could have done better with this kind of opportunity with DW. Still a mediocre sounding snare. However I totally agree with deeper snare bed good point on that part=)
We are happy with the results. The point wasn't to go over the top, rather a great all-around drum that would fit with any kit. Thanks for watching.

I dont know, DW snares seem sterile sounding to me.
I think DW should consider die cast hoops on the snare drum. Just to cut down on the ringing of the hoops
