Cleaning Oil Fired Boiler

  • In this video I am cleaning this Peerless WB-3 oil fired boiler after the heating season by brushing and vacuuming it.
This is not an annual tune-up; I’m just cleaning it before I shut the boiler down for the season so that the condensation inside the boiler doesn’t combine with the soot and erode the boiler.
This boiler use to be a warm start boiler & the domestic hot water was supplied to the home via a domestic hot water coil, meaning it would maintain temperature all year long, however recently that coil was removed & replaced with a heat-pump water heater. Since the boiler no longer maintains temperature in the offseason it is important that we clean it before shutting it off for the warmer months of the year.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
    Thanks for watching!

While You Have the Burner Out It's Also Good to Check The Retention Head And Clean If Needed .

    - Haha... I have the exact boiler you have but, I still have the tankless hot water hooked up. I added a 1" thick ceramic insulating blanket across the top of the boiler and the chamber cover and I've noticed it helps to suppress noise and retains heat longer between my Hi /Low / controls.

You mean between the silver and green thing?

@@Samlol23_drrich - YES! underneath the top green cover I laid 2 layers of Cerwool insulation on top of the combustion chamber silver cover.

@@Skoot61 Thank you! Im not sure how I am going to do this: my flue comes out of the top of the boiler not the back and I am going to have to take apart the metal piping to get the top off I think. thanks for the reply

2:49 I have this same boiler and it shows here it already has insulation under the cover.

@@mattfoley6082 - yes, that small piece of heat shield insulation isn't doing anything in terms of 'insulating.' Add 2 layers of 1" thick 'Cer-Wool' insulating blanket across the top of the tankless coil housing chamber and, also over that silver firebox access panel and then you'll notice less burner noise, longer periods between aqua- stat water temperature start-ups and better boiler heat retention times...

attention you miss a wash with baking soda is to dissolve in 2 gallons of water preferably hot or warm a small box of baking soda and when you finish a wash inside and where the brush could not enter that takes all and you will get better results. but first you have to wear whole clothes and masks and when you're done you have to bathe or remove the stains on your face and bodies with baking soda and wash your clothes with that same product baking soda masks because the smoke is very volatile oil and waste produced by the combustion chamber and your face and nose stick to your body if you do not have protective equipment, thank you.

I have a Peerless WB3 made in 10-90 (from serial number on tag). What is the brush you're cleaning with? How did you determine correct brush size?
I've been using a refrigerator brush and it works great. Fits just right on the diagonal between those nipples. (When boiler is cold otherwise brush will melt.) Definitely notice improvement after cleaning; the burner doesn't run as long.
I think you need to clean your pipe also. Need a 6" round brush.

I asked the salespeople working at my local supply store (FW Webb) & they were able to give me the correct size brush.
      Thanks!

Can you do that cleaning from the side instead of the top? Although I have the same boiler, the flue pipe comes out of the top, and there is a conduit screwed on also

My boiler is cleaned from the top down - can you find a manual for yours & see if it indicates how to clean it?

@@idothings6605 thanks for the response. I have a similar boiler Just that the flue pipe location is different. I already cleaned it out. Amazing. I’ve lived here for 11 years and never realized how easy it was to access the top and front and clean it. Thank you. Your video helped me.

If you are still using the boiler for heating your water, does it require extra steps in prep work to brush and vacuum out the soot?

I now clean the boiler before shutting it down for the summer so that it doesn't condensate all summer while dirty. Before When it was running all year long I would clean it before the beginning of heating season.

How much did you pay for that sootmaster vac?

I can't remember exactly but I do remember it was expensive. The boiler man couldn't come out last year due to large backlog from Covid, so I bought the tools to clean the boiler myself...
