Tyranids is definitely the scariest faction for me. Such a huge swarm can be so calculated, all converging on the defenses first, literally throwing their bodies into the gun barrels to disable them. And once they have no means to defend themselves, it's feeding time.

One thing to consider with how Tyranids can be all over the place without the Imperium knowing is that they don't travel through the warp. While they can move faster than light its still a very slow process compared to all the other factions. So when large defeats happen such at Maccrage, the fleets end up splitting apart and trying to rebuild by skulking around the galaxy looking for poorly defended worlds to eat and regrow from.

Funny you should mention the Orks 😁 In some of the latest lore from GW, Inquisitor Kryptmann managed to pull off what has become known as 'The Kryptmann Gambit'... essentially, he managed to funnel a whole tyranid hive fleet into the most heavily Ork-held region known to the Imperium. At first, it seemed like it was working; the Orks were thrilled at an apparently endless source of a good fight, the Tyranids engaged wholesale at the prospect of the richest seam of bio-mass that had ever had the nerve to rear up and punch it in the snout (figuratively speaking 😆).
For a while, it bought the nearest Imperial worlds some time to shore up defences. But as time progressed, they realised that not only were the tyranids adapting fast enough to finish the orks off, but the fleet that emerged would be much more powerful than the one that went in; with the tyranids, every scrap of organic matter can be broken down and recycled, used to create new monsters... and the Ork territories were starting to resemble an all-you-can-eat buffet...

The Nids are basically B-movie horror monsters and I've been collecting them for over 20 years. Love my hungry hungry buggy boys!
And to clarify about carnifexes( one of my favorites): they're basically living batering rams and are extremely versatile since you can give them many various ranged and melee weapons. And they're just fun to spam on the tabletop 😁

In regards to orks versus nids. That's called the octarius war. Kryptman baited the nid fleet tot he ork empire of orktarius, and the nids eventually won. Also nids are based off of lizards, not bugs. If you look at thier models alot of them look like mutant dinosaurs. They don't really crawl or have chitinous exoskeleton you'd see on insects or arachnids.

I always found Nids and Orks to be the 'least' evil of the 40k races.
Orks just love a fight. You know 'exactly' what you're gonna get from them, no subterfuge (mostly...), no unnecessary cruelty, just scraps and death.
Nids just see everyone as burgers. If anything, they're kinda neutral. Only reason they are bad is that humanity comes under the viable 'foodstuffs'
Edit: I'd say yes Kryptmann was right in his actions if looking at the bigger picture though. By that point, they had so much biomatter they would have been near unstoppable on those planets. If he didn't destroy them, then the hive fleet would have only continued to grow and by the time anyone was able to try and stop it, it would have potentially become galaxy threatening.

For me, one of the creepiest aspects of Tyranid Hive Fleet Leviathan was that at first, the Imperium couldn't make sense of where Leviathan was coming from. They seemed to be appearing at random star systems with no discernible routes or travel between them (so say at the same time Leviathan was attacking one planet, they're also attacking a star system that is nowhere near, and multiple star systems away). Then someone realized that Leviathan was attacking from BELOW the Milky Way's galactic plane. This has led to some fears that the Milky Way is in fact surrounded on all sides by Tyranid fleets on their way.

Genestealers are a sub faction of Tyranids, basically imagine a Tyranid showing up on a human planet or population, snaking around and finding seemingly random victims and giving them a "kiss" (genetic splicing) with it's tongue. The modified human being is a genestealers and will live out their lives breeding more genestealers and they slowly spread and when the time comes they will act as need be for their Tyranid saviors and lords. More or less.
As for orks vs. Tyranids it happens all the time, sometimes the Tyranids win and get biomass other times orks win and Tyranids pullout due to it being inefficient resource wise.

But one not so well known is "He who saves one, saves many." The Inquisition upholds a vow to defend humanity from threats without and within, and they do so with a cold heart, because they have to. They face horrors that would break the wills and minds of many. But if you cannot bother to even save a single human life, you cannot say you are on a quest to defend humanity.

We know who would win between 'nids and orks, because it happened: the 'nids!
In his scorched earth exterminatus crusade, Kryptman lead the Leviathan hive fleet to the Octarius system, a system completely occupied by orks, in the hope that 'nids and orks will annihilate each other.
It was a very long stalemate, with orks coming from all around the galaxy longing for what was promised to them to be the greatest brawl ever and, eventually... they lost.
The Leviathan won and now, thanks to all the orks they gorged themselves on, the hivefleet has so much biomass that they are almost unstoppable.
So... yeah... 'nids win against orks and Kryptman f*cked up big!
On a serius note, obviously GW won't give an open answer because, well, if a faction was to win 40k, the game ends... but the 'nids are gonna be the ultimate winners.
    -countless
    -constantly evolving
    -psionic killers
    -immune to chaos
-can devour literally anything (yes, they have creatures that can digest rock and metal too)

This is about a third of the Tyranid roster but can be seen in the video. It should be said Tyranids are my favorite faction and is by far in the top 3 biggest threat to the 40k Galaxy. Also to be said there have been 7 different 'main' Hive fleets. All of which have come from different points in the milky way Galaxy. There are also 3 theories with the Tyranids.
    1. That the Tyranids are running from something worse and we are just a speed bump to them
    2. That the universe has already been consumed by the Tyranids and there is nothing surrounding the milky way but more Tyranids
    3. That the Tyranids are some kind of bioweapon created by the Old Ones as a last ditch screw you to the universe before they were exterminated.

Kryptman should use a less cruel method of extermination than viral bombs, but at this point I understand the means. This is an enemy that grows stronger with each world devoured, its infection on a galactic scale and just simply sending soldiers intro this meat grinder would be counter productive . Maybe if they had huge fleets made from AI machines wichout organic components could eventualy bleed hive fleet but still if its have acces to biomass it will just rebuild itself over and over :(

That tactic may have denied them a lot of food. But there's still the biggest high Fleet in the strongeso. It didn't really do much for all that stuff was not worth it.

Sometimes the Imperium suffers from arrogance. The rest of the time, it suffers from honest ignorance, often by the Ecclesiarchy's design. Interesting point: in the original 40k book, Rogue Trader (1990), both genestealers and tyranids were mentioned, but they were somewhat different, and not immediately associated with each other. I don't think the tyranids became a playable faction until 5 years later?
The destruction of Chordelis occurs in Warriors of Ultramar by Graham McNeill, and is probably the best book to read in order to fully comprehend the tyranid threat. Kryptman was *right.*
Catachan Devils are... imagine a giant scorpion, but with a centipede's body. They feature in a game called Gladius as hostile wildlife... actually, you could look up tyranid units in the game too, to get a better look at all the different kinds of horrible they can bring to bear.

    Orks vs Tyranids: both win!
Orks would be so energized by the massive fighting. Nids would keep growing in biomass.
Necrons would mess up the Tyranids though. Can’t consume any biomass means no reinforcements. The eternal scythe shows no mercy to these upstart species!

No he should have waited for the nids to swarm a planet then bomb it taking out a huge chunk of the nid forces everytime but its easy to be smart after the fact the sheer fear he felt over these creatures could make anyone do dumb things and he is just a human not like a marine who do not feel fear and sturdy tactics for many hundred years. He is obvious a powerful human who have extended his life but human still

if Ghazkul can unite all the orc clans, the Orcs will win. I think in a war of attrition the Orcs would hold out, but they'd need to be united. otherwise the Tyranids will win everyday against a divided Orc army. Just my thoughts

Kryptman was wrong, modern lore confirmed this already. Bascially, what happened next is he send tyranids on the Octarius system (ork empire), thinking, ok orks and tyranids will slaughter each other, long story short, both came out stronger. Tyranids just keep coming, there were more tyranic wars, the one on Baal was really bad and in very recent lore, they announced tyranids appeared from a completely new angle and they're basically headed towards Terra (earth).
Going back to Kryptman, he barely made a dent in therms of military tactic. I do think it would have been better to recruit soldiers from these planets.
Deamons are terrible, orks are terrible, etc... so many enemies, but I think a lot of people are seeing Tyranids are the ultimate & final enemy. In theory they can wipe out everyone and then, they'll move to another galaxy, at this point even deamons are powerless.
If you want a good book about tyranids, there's not too many cause it's hard to see them as something else than the enemy, considering their lore, it's really hard to get into the skin of a tyranid (it's possible though, but it's... really weird, it's hard to explain), going back to the books, one book I would recommend, I would recommend the audio version, it's posible to find it, the book is good, but I much prefer the audio version => The Devastation of Baal.
Honestly it's my favorite warhammer book, I'm not a human/imperial guy, I collect nearly all the xenos/alien races, this book is about Blood Angels vs tyranids and it's glorious. It's so good while having these parts that made me seriously unconfortable, it's something else being used to how grimdark the lore is, but then they still manage to find lore that just makes skin crawl.
OK, one last think before I'm done: Drukhari/Dark Eldar are the worst thing that can happen to you in 40K, 100% worst fate, nobody will debate this. Chaos is bad, deamons are bad, tyranids are bad, etc... but then you get to drukhari. How bad are tyranids? Drukhari keep them as pets :). Most factions except for maybe orks run from tyranids, a massive fleet comes for an ork world, they might run if the ork boss is smart, but Drukhari actively go to nids, cause they need new pets.

A really basic explanation of tyranids. Devourers are the smallest bioform. They are like walking piranhas. Then come the gaunts (almost human size) they are cannon fodder and relatively weak. The termagants shoot, the hormagants are full melee. Gargoyles are winged gaunts. Now this smaller creatures doesn't have a brain, they are controllers bybthe warriors and other psychic creatures. The warriors are low rank officers basically, they are big, and pretty dangerous. Carnifex are enormous line breakers. Slow, strong as f and heavy armoured, they got different variants too. That's like the most basic nutshell, but tyrannids most powerful trait it's evolution, they're constantly adapting, so they are impossible to catalog.

The Zerg from Starcraft are similar to Tyranids, though Zerg are more advanced, generally more coordinated/intelligent, and they evolve, grow and mutate much quicker. The Zerg are just Tyranids but better in every way, except numbers. Tyranids far outnumber Zerg going off of how many Tyranids are active in the 40k universe vs how many zerg are active in the starcraft universe. Tyranids have no end, they just outnumber everything and even the Necrons are worried about them
