I was in a campaign where some annoying jackwagon insisted on playing a quickling. He would annoy stuff and lead it to us then run away. When he ran into giant spider web and got stuck we watched the spiders eat him.
I love these guys as messengers of ominous Fey correspondence. I think I'll have one be a recurring mailman for my characters to hire instead of forcing them to take up a spell slot on Sending.
AJ, this is your best video yet in my opinion! I loved the reference to Harry Potter and House Elves (I often felt that a large portion of those books/movies were derived from LOTR, D&D, and other fantasy sources yet most HP fans assume JK Rowling came up with them all on her own). Its always cool to find connections between D&D and the mainstream media. Your videos really add value to my life and offer loads of creative inspiration to me. Keep up the quality work!!
Do Brownies taste like chocolate? Just kidding, but seriously they will try & relocate rodents to save them? Brownies are so sweet. So Quicklings are EVIL Brownies ... Delicious. Yes I will keep making dessert puns. At least that's the Flan.
Holy shit... Undead quicklings. I'm thinking the not too smart undead that just shamble around looking to feed. Imagine finding a pit of quickling shamblers zooming about, smacking into each other and the walls.... After staring at this behavior for a bit they all stop, and stare up at you, unblinkingly.... As a player, I'd nope out of that so hard it's not even funny....
Could you please make videos on the races of ebberon? I know it’s not the forgotten realms and you already did a video on warforged that might appear in the setting but it’s not the same as when you talk about the races that are native or have been part of the setting for longer.
I used 13 of them in a carriage chase in a session a few weeks ago against 4 lvl 5 players (I should say 3 since our cleric jumped off a "dashing" carriage and went down to nothing in hp, on the first round).
I have a template for a human in many of my campaigns. Nigel the Quick. He is an evil guy in his origins. He knows a ritual of hunting, catching and killing quicklings. As an NPC, he is mostly a bad guy but is more neutral (selfish). His abilities are basically normal for his class and level with some attribute boosts, but when action is needed he is like under the effect of a Haste spell that is 8x, not 2x the effect, his armor class and saving throws based upon his DEX are tripled or at a bonus of 20, whichever is greater and all jumping is at 8x. Any other judgment relative to his quick abilities is relative to that. There are no power moves as Quicklings, Like Nigel the Quick, simply speed things up. He cannot get the mass nor force to do more damage just because he now goes fast. He does gain the ability to repeat it 8 times.
Don't insult fairies. 🤷 This is not a challenge. This is a rule of thumb. Its a bit like, don't cover yourself in gasoline and light it on fire. Same kind of obvious rule is obvious. You did well as a DM, and your players got what they asked for. Not to be harsh, but: Don't insult a Fey.
This is a great well of information for the details economics, I was just doing a bit on Lycanthropes, but I will add Brownies. Although I think there is a slight problem from official information seeming contradict older editions on the Queen of Air and Darkness, that it was made clear that she is neither evil, her court ugly, and it feels a bit like she is too similar to the Raven Queen in being illusive and without emotion. The DMG says the two queens are mostly opposed in an outlook that is not evil and good. I took a bit of creativity and came up with something that has them oppose two sides of the fey without being good or evil. My interpretation is that Titania as the Summer queen is warm and inviting, having big parties, but her court tends to be a bit hot headed. Titania sees true beauty in happiness, and wants everyone to be beautiful in being happy. The Queen of Air and Darkness, sees beauty in sadness, in tragedy where people face adversity, but may even feel more compelled. The Summer court is open and ready for party, but humans would probably become exhausted and offend them. The Gloaming court is unfriendly, and used for hunts of intruders, seen as protection from ugly cheer and celebrate glory of tragedy. But you could appeal to them. Going off of Volo's Quicklings, I was going that they were punished like said use to be lazg, because the Queen hates laziness, like those that lose hope when grieving. The Queen cursed them by speeding up their time so they would appreciate tragedy and move. I thought maybe Quicklings are trying to remove it, by trying to appeal to the Queen, taking part in hunts, and pranks purposely to make targets sad. Thinking the Queen might like that. An added bit, hag are mentioned of not part of courts due to being ugliness. Specifically there is the green hag that lives in bogs that the Gloaming court likes, but green hags like making people feel hopeless and lose their will. Something I was thinking would contrast the Queen Of Air and Darkness hoping it motivates.
Arthur if he were an 80s noir cop mystery mixed with fantasy. The Dresden files is like Harry Potter as re-imagined by Quentin Tarantino. In the later books, Harry could give barbarians lessons on how to rage. He's one of those heroes that villains actually become terrified of. And I love that. Dude's a force of nature. And his favorite restaurant is Burger King. :D
I have a campaign of chaotic neutral humanoids my two pcs,a alahgi and a quickling are both really cool to play and as theif the quickling is very successfu!l Nice vid aj!
Rather than increase their speed, how about giving them the rogue ability cunning action. This allows them to move 360 ft per round if they dash on their action and bonus action. Being able to hide or disengage as a bonus action also seems appropriate.
When I got to the end of this all I could think was how I'm guna have a fountain of wild magic gushing from a deep Forrest were most of the animals can tank and they have derby races with quicklings.
I read one possible origin about the Queen of Air and Darkness that claimed she was corrupted by a dark, multifaceted gem of blackest evil; it was also suggested that this gem had some connection to the Elder Elemental Eye, which as gamers know, is an alias of Tharizdun.
@@AJPickett i created a wonderous item. (Sentient) clockwork caltrops. After attunement, they functioned like hivemind of wasps. Telepathy, and Blindsight, and Camouflage. a spin on the old 3.5 half-fey template comes to mind and work the abilities of the template around the abilities of a quickling. lol, I also have other nasty ideas for this. lmao
These guys are the kinda things that sound better in your head than in practice. If their speed are actually stated out to match the kinda things they can do in the fluff, they’d make mince meat of the action economy. With over a hundred actions a round, and even then ending said round at least half a mile away. All out of a creature that isn’t even “supposed” to be that strong.😅
🤔 Didn't you have videos on changelings and shifters? Apologies as I know that's not on topic of the video and they're two races from the Eberron setting... I still enjoy those two races though, as they make sense on the continent of faerun.
Blah despicable little buggers. I had to content with them under the control to some evil being. Glad I force them all to roll a Con save and they all turned into nice little ice ornaments.

Hey AJ, a friend and I are making a dnd channel, we only have my phone to record with and we have some idea of what we want to do for the channel, do you have any tips to make it easier for us to get started? We both watch your content and if you are wondering we are called Critical Failure.
Write a script, just be yourself (it's less effort), imagine you are talking to a friend, Audio is more important than video and upload at least once a week, forever.
AJ Pickett we plan on uploading a few times a week if possible, we want to get a few videos done and uploaded soon, I would love to have to watch our videos when they are up to have you critique them.
OMG, please tell me an onyx pearl was found as an elven artifact. GM Rulling desired. From a real being, why not? My first epic encounter, they came from great deep sea clam. As a Captain my specialist mage brought them forth. My char(one of few "fully played"), a lvl25(no joke, before-multi-class 2.0) gladiator, expandied into the world of mercantilism after a self damaging love of slavery (literally hundreds of shows in an arena[Darksun] in1994?)... Lord Aldor Maxus(before the fabled video game company stole his thunder) conquered the western seas of Toril. His greatest story, being when he was able to conquer the fabled soul beholder, a landlocked beholder who having become immobile in an island after a glutenous consumption of souls had become considered inconqurable in the far Western seas. Aldor however was inconquerable, and became the lord of then sea in his time, who at once traded with the queen of elves. He procured a set of gem armor(battery),and a sword(charger) that months after granted Aldor Maxus demigodod status (after trading 500k souls to assorted gods[maintaining NG status]), and later godlinghood after he spawned a replicant species with the help of the artificier demigog, Nazax. (petition to AO accepted and announced into the the meltiversal being)inampaign) would allow the beholders destruction[a VERY active gm, with probably 30-50 quality(0-lvl20)players per year].
Every body else only moves thirty feet so one hundred and twenty feet is quite the increase. And a dash of two hundred and forty feet is pretty crazy. And if you’re gonna make a quickling faster why would you not make horses and any other animal faster.
If they were a playable race was a second level their and had haste cast on them they could travel 480 ft per turn from the move, dash action second dash action and dash bonus action
For their size, the 28 mph is like us running at 100+ mph. They are also able to go at that speed and stop on a dime.

I love using Dresden files as an idea to how to depect the different groups of fay. Great book if anyone wants to give it a read
2:55 T pose to assert Dominance. Let other races know you don't mess around.
Could they become vampires? Tiny speed demon vampires. Fixes their issue with having a short life span.
they could probably be a lich but not a vampire if its a disease.
A Quickling Lich would be annoying to deal with...
"Brownie is similar to a halfling, but smaller"
So, a quaterling?
So many terrible quarter pounder jokes...
Do Brownies taste like chocolate? Just kidding, but seriously they will try & relocate rodents to save them? Brownies are so sweet.

Yes I will keep making dessert puns. At least that's the Flan.
Would a Quickling ever be a realistic option for a Warlock familiar? Maybe for an undying patron since they want to live longer?
You'd have to name him sonic. and get him red shoes. lol
Uh... you know, that never even occurred to me, but yes, they would make pretty interesting familiars.

Sure, I'm happy to do that.

Since it is Tiny, moving at 240 feet a round is 40 times its size per second. That's relatively fast.
When I used a quickling on my players, they called it papa smurf. It got away and later lured a tanarukk to kill them.

10:00 quicklings are around a foot tall, if I heard correctly. So scale them up to 6ft tall and they're really moving at 120ft/second
Not a difficult task for a Tabaxi Monk with the right feats and items.

Kedron Mercer quickling skeleton
Quickling Black Metal Drummer!
That was my first thought
Sounds like the most poetic justice for a Quickling's malice and mischief is an aging spell or effect. Too bad there aren't many in 5E.
The amount of Quicklings in 5E depends on the DM

I thought about pairing this one with a Red Cap for a murder duo. Maybe a lethal Trio with a Hag....
Ok. I'm glad that Maab is in d&d lore.
Lol I was just thinking the same thing! Time to get Harry Dresden on the case!
Ah yes. The number one reason caltrops should be in every adventure equipment. Right next to the bear trap.
Bag of metal ball bearings.

I just got an idea to have Quicklings wearing skinned rat furs so for that one second or two that its seen people think they saw a really fast rat.

If you want to know more about the unseelie and the Queen of air and darkness check out the Escalla and Justicar series by Paul Kidd.
Cody Chavez or the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher. She's in those books a lot

Well, let's say they were 10 ft slower per round, they would still be damned fast.
Still if fey could be undead i assume the forces of the shadow fell would be very interested in the raising of undead fey
