As a 16 year old female: I still trick or treat with my little brother and sometimes with a group of friends. My thought is, as long as you still dress up and put effort into your costume and not just walk around in casual clothing, up until the age of 18 it’s okay.
A good way I found to trick and treat after adult was making a costume that had synergy with the kid's costumes. Like 3 kids doing powerpuff girls costumes and me as the professor. I didn't ask for the candy but I had my cut. If anyone asked I said I was looking after the kids (which I was technically doing).
Honestly it's fun. I don't have to talk to the adults I'm more of a introvert.

I am from Europe but I guess the problem with Americans as I can ONLY imagine is the part that you start at 16 if I'm not wrong and you don't have to go to school your parents can teach you all their bad habits so you can be a bad driver like them... The test can test you a lot if it's done properly but not for every single thing. I mean I don't keep my hands in the right spot and I may answer the phone if it's from my mum while driving but I've seen some habits that are straight horrible.
