I have seen a lawyer talk about this on UA-cam and it's his opinion that Amazon wants to provide transparency to their customers. In other words, Amazon wants to be completely honest with their customers as to whether they are buying original content or AI generated content. He also advises to be completely honest in our declaration.
Id imagine this is a way for them to get metrics on how many products are ai generated. It also puts them in a great place if they were to try training a model to determine whether something was AI generated. Now they have training data and and answers stored at scale.
Labelling books would make sense. For the most part, it's quality that counts, AI or no AI, but I'm sure there are customers who'd rather want to support human creators. Because an artist would spend months drawing the colouring book or children's book pages, with AI it's almost only a click of a button. This is just an example but that's a huge difference.
Just saw an update kind of related to this "Amazon launches generative AI to help sellers write product descriptions" so it seems like they are on the AI train as well. I guess only time will tell which direction or approach they take. They could eventually make an AI model that will just produce their own products based on user searches and cut us out all together.
As always, your videos are always very helpful and sincere, Paul. I started publishing on KDP because of you. Yes, that famous dinosaur coloring book of yours 😄. Within 10 days after playing your dinosaur video over and over again, making notes, checking the transcript and using your interior and cover guides, I managed to publish my 1st coloring book within 10 days... No, it's not a from rags to riches, or from zero to hero story but it was a major achievement for me. I now have 2 coloring books and 6 journals out there on KDP....all thanks to you. I believe in honesty and integrity in all that we do. And as far as 'borrowing' or taking from AI, we should come clean about our content. Yes, I will declare on KDP how much of my content is from AI.... And thank you also for your advice to not put all our eggs in one basket, to weigh all the risks that we take, and to move forward accordingly. Thank you, Paul...there aren't very many people like you out on UA-cam...I have deep respect for you, Dr. Marles...T.H.A.N.K. Y.O.U. 🙂

I think it's probably an Amazon data gathering exercise and they're trying to crack down on poor quality content books. I've published 2 AI coloring books since this update and they're listed and selling as normal.
Honestly, no one knows for sure why Amazon wants to know if you're publishing with the help of AI or not. One thing is for sure though, Amazon wants to monitor those books. I'm pretty sure that Amazon will not ban AI-created books as long as they comply with the rules (quality, copyright, etc.). Let's face the present: AI is here to say and get better! Publishing a "human-created" book doesn't mean it's better than an AI-generated book. It's like saying that machine washing your clothes is worse than hand washing them. Nonsense! All the best!
Thank you for this video. I suspect it's like you said, 1) Amazon may be using it initially to gather data and 2) subsequently scrutinize those books more closely (could mean those books may experience some delay in publishing). Also I wonder if some people using AI are properly checking if those images are elsewhere, or even if the AI is a good quality (example: cat has five paws instead of four).
Poor resolution too, some people don't bother, or don't know, to upscale the images for print, so images end up looking like crap once printed. (Or when the quality of the lineart is bad).
you can request a proof of your book if you have any concerns with book quality. I did this and was surprised about several things. I also had the opportunity to go in and change those things.
Thank you for this video. It is confiusing because artists from creative fabrica sell there art using AI and don't tell it in their description so when we use their AI creations it may be unsafe for our business and kdp account .
I used Ai to help illustrate on a children's book I wrote, though I significantly edited and re-worked the illustrations myself. I checked the appropriate boxes saying I had used Ai images with extensive edits. Six days later (today 9/17/23) half of the books on my bookshelf were blocked! I have contacted Amazon and am waiting for their response.
Yes because people who have 264 thousand followers promoted using AI content and I find it hard to believe that they didn’t have the foresight to see this would happen. It was surprising it took them that long to crack down. The next step of Amazon will be to charge up-loaders £2 to £5 per upload.
AI is here to stay, so I'm with you in terms of them collecting data and not rejecting AI content. They do seem ultra touchy about content sources though. I got a suspension for using a Canva background on a book cover, even though I have Canva Pro and the image was for commercial use. My biggest problem is the uploads seem to be capped at 3 low content books all of a sudden. I was happily loading 20-30 in a session up until a few days ago. Anyone else seeing the same?
But if you download images from sites like ‘Creative Fabrica’, you might not be aware if the person who posted them used AI to generate those images or not. Thanks for sharing. I saw this option the other day. I was a little confused about it. I was very honest about it, since I am aware there are software where companies can use to verefy this information. 🤔
You can transfer or sell a trademark in perpetuity but the same can't be said for copyright. Copyright (after 1978) still has a threshold of Author's Life + 70 Years. Prior to 1978, the maximum duration is 95 years which is the first 28 years then you'd have to renew and get an additional 67 years, but again not to eclipse 95 years total (auto renewal started in 1992). If you failed to renew it is then public domain. If 95 years have passed it's public domain. If the author has been dead for 70 years plus a day then it's public domain. You can't keep/transfer copyright in perpetuity. A trademark can provided it is renewed accordingly and on schedule. Artists that have been dead for well over 100 years no longer have copyright protection on their works. This would include artists, sculptors, musicians, etc. Any work that can be rendered in a tangible medium.
FYI I just submitted a coloring book, I checked : Yes I used AI; Many AI generated images with minimal editing I had 1 error they had me fix with bleed, after I fixed it, it is live. So, my first coloring book I created that I had to answer those questions about, I answered very truthfully how I created it, and it is live now. No issues.
@@paulmarles I'd like to think that if KDP is going to decide to not allow, or ban, items created using majority AI, they would make an announcement, and allow creators to change their future content, rather than straight-up discontinue accounts and ban them without notice. AI has made it too easy and I think creators don't want customers to know that none of the content is actually handmade. Very few people will honestly report their AI content.
Thanks Paul. I believe AI is a useful tool if used carefully and creatively. thanks for clarifying Amazon KDP's new AI rules. Your section on Adobe Stock Photos was very interesting, not only because they are labeling AI content, but that they are recognizing AI as a creative tool and are purchasing product from AI assisted creators. I noticed the Creative Fabrica is also labeling content that has been created by AI or with the assistance of AI.
Even using "ai art generated" tools like Mid Journey, one needs to be very careful. One children's book author who used Midjourney was recently sued by the human artist illustrator.
Have you noticed that if you select "Yes" and fill out your info for "Images" you get a "Please fix the highlighted error(s) to continue" because you haven't also selected "Texts" and "Translations"? I'm forced to not comply when all I have is some AI help with my cover.
Perhaps Amazon is gathering info to determine the particular AI tools which are being used, so it can begin generating its own AI content and make user submissions superfluous, thereby keeping all the profit for themselves.
To avoid the AI problem, I either buy images or use free, open licensed images to cut pieces out and create an image because I can't afford models. I've literally made individual people Frankensteined together into a believeable person and even whole scenes. If I do use AI, I use landscapes that I splice together or I generate in the hopes of a cool texture forming so I can crop and use it as an overlay for added effect and dimension in my images.
KDP asks about whether AI is used but it doesn't let you differentiate between text and images. My book was completely written by me but images were generated via Midjouney. But I had to answer all three questions in the affirmative and I couldn't do that because there was no text generated via AI. Why don't they allow a yes or a no answer?
Thanks for another great video. I remember when I joined MidJourney and I think it was when I paid for their "Standard" level it stated, or maybe they state it to all even in the free memberships, that all images are your own, are not under some copyright or legal issue. I wrote my whole trilogy myself with zero help from AI, all purely myself. I hope it stays at that and because my cover image came from MJ maybe they make the clear distinction the image and not my story is AI generated. Is that right, in the end does KDP put on the inside pages image is AI generated but not the story? I hope so.
I have a question. I created a book and I want to publish through KDP. My question is, how do I go about being a seller that qualifies as a prime sale? Meaning when someone searches for my book and they click prime only how do i get my book to be in that categori? Please help I can't find the information anywhere. Thank You much appreciated.
Paul - I recently came across your channel and find your videos so clear and informative! Thank you! I intend to use some illustrations done thru a Fiverr gig. Since I would have paid for it, I own the rights. But, and here's the big but It is not possible for me to know whether that gig used AI to create the images for me. How can one work around this? Thanks in advance for your reply.
I selected that books are mostly generated with ai .. they are live .. but my Sales are stopped from that day..its too frustrating... 0 Sales from that day... even for the other books which are not with ai
Amazon want to know because they don't know your using them. Especially if you use the chat bots on top of eachother and use grammarly or similar on top.
Your videos are amazingly informative and helpful. Thank you. I do have a question though. I'm working on a book where I have used "[artist name] style" in my prompts. I have checked all my images with Tin Eye which is returning 0 similar results. Moving forward, I plan to not use an artist name in my prompt, but do you think it would be alright to use the art I already have?
Hello. I would like to ask you. I wrote my book myself, completely. I wrote my book in Russian, and used AI only to translate it into English, so that I could then put it on Amazon KDP. The translated text will also be edited by the editor. I wanted to ask if I should indicate in this case that I used AI. I'm just afraid that in this case the AI will become a co-author and everyone will think that I am not the creator of the original content. It's just that the whole plot and text are mine...
Hi, Mr Paul Marles need your guidance... I learned from you and started creating my books following your tutorils. Today i am unable to upload my first ever book on Kdp... it says error while processing the file and check the interior of book.. its a coloring activity book.. 8.5 11 in... 71 pages.. little content added as instructional statements.... im trying since morning... completely stressed out.. please your guidance required
I have always thought that using AI to help with writing a book was cheating. Im 12k words in my book and I find that using AI is more a kin to hiring an editor more than hiring a ghost writer. I am still doing most of the editing and it hasnt really saved me anytime.
My guess is: They use this information to train an AI model which automatically detects AI generated books. You basically feed their AI detection algorithm. They might change their TOS or not depending on if the turnover generated by the AI books is higher than the damage caused by lawsuits and complaints about AI generated content. Even certain countries might introduce some laws that prohibit AI content. In any case, it's a wise decision by Amazon.
Hi, can I use one or multiple AI-generated images with a Pro account for my KDP covers and interiors? If I modify them with Canva, are they still at risk? Thanks a lot!
I'm about to upload a game I invented for families to play. I did use AI to help with the write-up of the rules, first by explaining the rules to the AI and then having it write up two sets of instructions - one targeted to the children and one targeted to the parents. I DID come up with the concept and instructions on my own, but I used AI to refine those instructions to best fit the target audiences I wanted to reach. If I included the sets of instructions as written by AI, would this be considered AI-generated content, or AI-assisted? I would say AI assisted since I came up with the original content and just asked AI to refine it in a specific way. Any thoughts on this from anyone? I'm feeling a little confused about it.
Hey Paul I have been watching your videos since 2022 when I started writing/ creating books on KDP I am thankful to you. But now I have a question I hope you will help me about it . I have used AI for creating some illustrations in books story books I mean before KDP this update about AI content. I wanted to make will this could be a issue for me or not in future?? Thanks in advance
Thank you for your very informative videos, I am learning a lot on my journey with KDP. I am total confused with the AI Amazon situation. If I purchase interior and cover images on Creative Fabrica to make a journal and I edit them a little or don't edit them and make a journal to sell on Amazon KDP do I check the yes box or the no box for the AI-Generated Content question when setting my book up with Amazon?
My Halloween coloring book created using AI not published, after 72 hours “review” status changed to “draft”. Will try again and share update later on.
I suspect they do their AI checks when it comes to text. There are plenty tools available to detect AI generated content, so there's no reason why Amazon would not use it. I guess they just named it 'research' but plan to use that information in one or another way (like Paul pointed out too) at one point. I personally would not risk getting my account banned for this.
Amazon is a beast. A machine. Anyone who has had to deal with Amazon "customer service" as a seller on FBA, MOD or KDP knows they are tyrannical, brutal, heartless. Am I going to deliberately assist this billion dollar company to "research" new ways to terrorize, dominate and intimidate their small time creators? Not a chance.
thank you for this great video, can you give us some names of platforms on which we can also sell our books apart from Amazon kdp, you are great thank you very much sir
I wonder where it stands to use techniques like map bashing or image bashing along with ControlNet and AUTOMATIC1111. I mean you are manually creating an image montage (in photoshop or gimp, etc) which you then use to generate new images. There's also scrible, sketch or line art Controlnet models so you can pass your own doodles or lineart to create completed images. I'm assuming those would count as AI assisted images??...
Any creator using AI this way is burning a candle at both ends. Once the technology becomes ubiquitous, nobody will buy books obviously generated by AI. I think that it would be wiser to invest in creating books with traditional art...and a brand that is certified as hand made. Once AI gets perect it will be boring.
How much would you charge for 10 minutes of your time ? And its not for pointers or stupid questions on how to. I have a legit project that I cannot do. And I don't care who takes this idea...as long as it gets out there. Please.

Thank you. The instructions are easy to follow.👍
Thank You much appreciated.
is there any evidence that Amazon somehow downgrades the rankings of AI-generated or AI-assisted books?
I have not seen any evidence of that to date.
Hello Paul;
I made a puzzle book and I only generate the how to play pages with AI, should I mention that I used AI in my book
My advice would be to ask the creator and then all you can do is take their word for it and, based on that, decide whether to use them or not.
But if I only use chatgpt to help me write the description of the notebook from Amazon should I press there “AI generated content” ?
I guess that means that contracts with illustrators will also have to unclude a "no-AI" stipulations.
Yes I noticed it too?
I selected that books are mostly generated with ai .. they are live .. but my Sales are stopped from that day..its too frustrating... 0 Sales from that day... even for the other books which are not with ai
We’re you getting sales before that?
@@Nailnation1 oh yes..I am running ads as well .. even the organic Sales has stopped .. now I have decided to take down all of ai generated books ..
Amazon want to know because they don't know your using them. Especially if you use the chat bots on top of eachother and use grammarly or similar on top.
they close my Account because I used AI.. they didn't say it like that. but after I upload a bock putting that Ai box. my account got suspended
It may have been another reason.
Nice video.....thank you for sharing
Your videos are amazingly informative and helpful. Thank you.
I do have a question though. I'm working on a book where I have used "[artist name] style" in my prompts. I have checked all my images with Tin Eye which is returning 0 similar results. Moving forward, I plan to not use an artist name in my prompt, but do you think it would be alright to use the art I already have?
I can only repeat what I said in the video. That is not something I would do personally which I base on Adobe's submission guidelines.
Alright. Thank you.@@paulmarles
71 pages.. little content added as instructional statements.... im trying since morning... completely stressed out.. please your guidance required
would using bookbolt to create mazes count as an AI assisted or AI generated?
I use Grammarly, Prowritingaid, and WordTune. I am not sure how to deal with it.
I have always thought that using AI to help with writing a book was cheating. Im 12k words in my book and I find that using AI is more a kin to hiring an editor more than hiring a ghost writer. I am still doing most of the editing and it hasnt really saved me anytime.
If AI becomes illegal to sell then it will be easy for them to remove them. It's sensible forethought
Thanks for the video! Could you do a video about other platforms to sell our books that you recommend?
Hi Paul,
How would you remove shadows from Midjourney images?
Thanks!
Thank you Dr Paul!
If you wrote the original content and you used AI to modify it then that sounds like AI assisted.
He said no. Because uve edited it
I created 100 covers for 100 Sudoku books using Medjourney, but I did not purchase it. Do I have the right to publish the books on Amazon?
My Halloween coloring book created using AI not published, after 72 hours “review” status changed to “draft”. Will try again and share update later on.
Update?
it was published, some mistakes in naming. Not because of AI
great one paul
Thank you.
Thanks Paul for sharing your thoughts.
You're welcome. Thank you for watching.
Interesting, thanks!
You're welcome.
I just wanted to ask you if we buy templates or covers on Gumroad can it be used commercially
Any that you get from my shop can be used commercially. No problem.
well said
, thank you
Hi can i use AI generated description in Amazon kdp?
Merci Paul 🙏
Thank you
You're welcome.
Let KDP do their own research, and not get any yay or nay assistance from us. There’s no way I would tell them yes if I used AI assistance.
There's no way bro.
I am going to rewrite and proofread it. This doesn't mean I generated my content from AI
I couldnt agree more haha
Yeah I did that and got my account blocked so I don't recommend 😂
Please do you run adds, I start 2 months ago and nothing, i watched all your video.and tyvm
I have in the past. I'm not running any at the moment.
Noticed it a week ago ...
Additionally, it should impact the royalty too as the author is not putting that much effort to write a book.
Ha! I found the transcript!
Use AI but choosing No is best, and you don't have to worry about anything
... until you get caught.

thank you for this great video, can you give us some names of platforms on which we can also sell our books apart from Amazon kdp, you are great thank you very much sir
You could look at IngramSpark, Lulu.
Thank you :)@@paulmarles
When you start a youtube channel for another type of business? Ex. Affiliate marketing
My doubt chatgpt direct content will use is good
How could they know if we use artist names in the prompt?
They can't.
@@portlandmicitycouncilmeetingsWell they can. They have filtered out those words so you can't use them in the prompt.
Even though you don't name the artist do you (or is it polite to) go back and tip the OA? 25%?
Interesting that Amazon uses AI as part of its search retrieval algorithm.
If you're creating the original image that is then being modified by AI then that sounds like AI assisted.
You are superb (French for a great person)! I appreciate all your advice I am a writer ✍️ and teacher. Wonderful advices 😊
Thank you. I'm glad you find it hepful.
I'm going to be stubborn and not leave you alone until you hear me out. Please.
Do not answer yes to this question. Doing so opens you up to possible later legal lawsuits.
Thank you! But please do not smack into the microphone!!!!
Please sir tell me how we create account on Amazon KDP
You go to kdp.amazon.com and fill out the required details.

Please.
I don;t offer any consultations at the moment but appreciate you asking.
